MONEY MARKET, Friday, Dee. 23—6 P. M. ‘The business at the Stock Board was not largeto-day, but prices were a little more firm. Ohio 6’s rose}; Mo- hawk Railroad 1}. Mobile funds were better to-day, 94210. The Union Bank of Dover, New Jersey, bills area little too plenty to be safe. That concern is connected with ar iron establishment, and its circulating bills ore a means of borrowing labor from the industrious classes. This man ner of supplying capital, is of all others that which should be tolerated the least. The bills of the Farmers’ Bank, at Malone, Franklin County, are no longer redeemed at the Sun office. At New Orleans on the 13th inst., the schr. Emeline, from Tampico, arrived with $263,506 in specie. Sbe is bound for New York, and has $23,000 for this place. At Mobile, the stockholders of the Planters & Merchants’ Bank met by adjournmenton the 12th inst., when resolu- tions were passed in favor of placing the institution in im- mediate liquidation, and turning its assets into means for the payment of its debts. These resolutions import merely that the institution, like so many of its predecessors, is in- solvent and worthless—and that probably it may pay ten or a hundred cents on the dollar. Mr. J. G. Winter, the owner of the Bank of St. Mary’s, has published in the Columbus papers, a contradiction of thecharge made by G. W. Anderson, Eeq., in the State Legislature, that he had made over all his property. ‘The movement in exchanges has been very moderate this week, as usnal at this period of the year. Alabama hasin some degree improved, and would doubtless soon approach par, wasthere any certainty as to the action of the Legislature of that State in regard to the suspended banks. Those insolvent institutions seem to hold the Le gislature captive, and to make it dance to their bidding. ‘The rates of billa to day were as follows :— Oopmpees Mapes ov Bang Notes yd Bosmeric Brus. gehts eee aM & eR 1 2 t t 1 as 4 a tk : 2 it he its Bia 5 lichigan The state of the exchanges continues exceedingly healthy, and cannot be disturbed by any fictitious supply of, or demand for bills, springing out of the credit opera- tions of paperbanks. The supply of bills now grows en- tirely out of the actual sale of produce, and the demand is confined to the amount required to pay for goods con” sumed and actually paid for. ‘There is no credit, no trust- ing “ to the next crop,” whereby the laboring man is in- duced to consume the labor of two years in one of luxury, in order that the merchants may get rich in aday. The traders, bankers, brokers, and States, for years borrowed prosperity of posterity. They consumed in riot and extre. vagance that which another generation is to earn, if they choose to submit to'it. The people of England now are sweating and groaning to pay for the money given to the tyrants of Europe by Pitt, to check the progress of repub- licanism. The people of thiscountry are now called upen to work for the money spent by the bankers in champagne and silk. The secret history of one half the present debt of Pennsylvania, shows that public improvement wasa pretence set up to contract State loans, the proceeds of which enabled the Bank of the United States to feed the extravagance of the politicians and speculators, whose notes new Censtitute $28,000,000 of the werthless assets of that concern. The bank obtained stocks of the States by giving them its promises to circulate as money. It now holds $14,000,000 of those stocks, neerly worthless. The promises which it gave for them are in the handsof the people at a discount of 60 per cent. The money which it borrowed on the stock was lent to lawyers, editors, specu- Jators, and “ men of high standing,” of all descriptions. They sent the money to France to buy silks and wines. England holds the worthless stock, and the American people the valueless promises. Mr. Cost Johnson now Proposes that the farmers of Connecticut, New Hamp- shire, and other States, that never borrowed a dollar, shall be taxed to pay for loans originating with the United States Bank of Pennsylvania, an institution which the United States refused to recharter, for fear of the difficul- ties which have now occurred. The Journalof St. Petersburgh, received by the late ar. rivals, givesthe following returns of the imports and ex- ports of Russia for the year 1941 : Trave or Ressia. The latter had never before sent so large a quantity of tea to the market of Kiachta, eo that the importation of that article, although very considerable during the preceding years, augmented in a remarkable proportion in 1941. The gold and silver ingots or coin are not included in the above amounts. In 1641, the exports of precious me- tals were 4,033,723 silver rubles, ond the imports 9,247,967. The coasting navigation presented in the northern seas a greater activity than during the previous year, whilst in the Black Sea there was a small diminution, the num- ber of vessels which proceeded from one harbor to ano- ther having amounted, in the former, to 2,007, and in the latter, to 6,275. The recent extension of the Russian trade with China has become an object of much interest. The basis of the present trade between those countries is the treaty of Kiachta bearing date 1728, Jn that treaty it was declared that acaravan might go to Pekin every three years, on condition that it should net contain more than 200 persons, and directly this cara- van reached the frontier, notice was to be sent to the Chi- nese court, which would dispatch an officer to meet the caravan, and conduct the personsto Pekin. Kiachta and Tuemcehaitu, both of which are situated on the confines of Siberia, were appointed as places of resort, where a trade to the subjects of both nations was allowed. The commerce, as it is now carried on, is entirely a trade of Larter, the Russians being prohibited to export their coin, and the Chinese being unable to take anything but bullion. The Chinese merchant comes first to Kiach- ta,and examines the merchandise he wants in the ware- house of the Russian trader, and when the price is settled, the goods are sealed in the presence of the Chinese. Both parties repair to Maimatschin, where the Russian chooses his commodities, and leaves behind a person of confidence, who remains in the warehouse till the Russian goods are delivered, when he returns with the Chinese merchan- dise to Kiachta. Furs and peltry are the most important articles ‘ofim- portation on the side of the Russians, Most of these come from Siberia and the newly-discovered islands, but, as a sufficient supply is not thus obtained for the Kiachta mar- ket, foreign furs are sent to St. Petersburgh and are thence despatched to the frontiers, Cloth, the coarser sort of which is manufactured in Russia, while the finer sort principally comes from England, Prussia, and France, is the second article of exportation. Camlets, caliman. covs, druggets, white flannels, stuffs, velvets, coarse linen, Russia leather, tanned hides, glass ware, hard ware, tin, tale, cattle, sporting dogs, provisions, and meal are th: remeining articles, though meal is less imported than for- merly, from the Chinese having extended their agricul- ture, On the other hand the Chinene supply the Russians with silk, both manufactured and raw (elthough the ex- MARITIME HERALD. ee eatin Salling Days of the Steam Ships. : FROM ENGLAND. The trade with China is found to be exceedingly pro- fitable to Russia, as she is able to dispose of such furs as are of 90 little value that they would not pay the expense of carriage from the east af Siberia to European Russia, while the richer furs, which are suld very dear to China, would not find purchasers in Russia on account of their expensiveness. They are also able to obtain from China, in exchange for these articles, which would otherwise Packets to Sail. FOR LIVERPOOL. Siddons Cobb, Dec. 25 Cambridge, B. ‘Abubaresn: Har PROM FoI MOUTH.
