Srveutak Arrarn.—We are informed of a very reuvarkable affair that occurred a few days ago in Wayne county, in this State, which, as has has been Telated to us, js as follows; About four months ago, there came into that ccunty a young man of the name of Grimsley, who formerly lived there, but who had been absent for many years. Shortly al- ter his return,he engaged hiwseif to a Miss Martia of that county, and their marriage was to take place ov the 24¢: of fhismoath. Four or five days previous Miss M. was makiag up her wedding bocnet, and Tequiring some paper for the lining, while in search ol it, she found & newspaper published two years ago in Mississippi. In cu'tiny up this paper her eye lit upon an advertisement by the Governor ot’ Mis- sisi; pi, offering a large reward for two men charged with a murder in that State, one of them named Grimsley, and agreeing precisely in description with the man to whom she was about to be married.— She immediately called her brother's attention to it, who at once called upon Grimsley for an explana. tion. Grimsley denied knowing any thing about it, and eaid he could prove that he was not in Missis- sippi at the time of the murder, by persons at Bnow Hul, Green ae The brother accompanied him to Snow Hill, but on their arriving there not a soul knew him. He then said that he could estab- lish his innocence by persons living at another little village in the samie county. There they Ylso re- paired, and with the like success, no one knowing any thing of him. They then returned to Waynes- berongh, where a warrant was issued against Grimsley, and he is now in jail at that place, wait ing the demand of the Governor of Mississappi.— Since his confinement, he has acknowledged that he was present when the murder was comrnitted with which he is charged in the advertisement as a participant, butdenied that he was engaged in it — Wilmington, N. C. Chronicle, Nov. 30. Opexina or THe St Lawrence.— That immense work, toe ship canal which connects the St. Law- rence with tne upper lakes, is completed, as will be seen by the following extract froin the Kingston Whig ot November 30 :—This forenoon the iahabit ants ot Kingston were greatly surprized by the arri- val from Cornwall of the beauntul and capacious steamboat Highlander, Capt. Stearns. This steam- boat was the first vessel that passed through the St. Lawrence canal, which achievement she performed on Friday last. A though one of the largest steamboats afloat, the Highlander met with no difficulty in passing through the canal or locks. She left the mouth of the canal yesterday, and ascended the rapids between that and Prescott with the greatest ease. ; When the city authorities heard of the Highland- er’s arrival, the acting Mayor and Corporation went on board in a body and congratulated Capt. Stearns onthe event. The authorities then invited the cap- tain of the boat, Capt. Whipple, the managing pro- prietor, and such of the forwarding merchants as were present, to the British American Hotel. where luncn was prepared, during the discussion of which a vast many complimentary toasts were drunk, and several goou speeches made. The Highlander will depart on her return home on Thursday. Successor To BisHor Encianp.—It_is announced that the Rev. Western Rivers.—The Ohio has fallen twelve inches during the last 24 hours, and is rather full of floating ice. There is sull between four and five feet in Sg ria froux eis ont to the rire gissippi. ¢ prospect of an immediate rise from above is very gloomy. The last boat from Pits- burgh, the North Bend, reports but three and a haif feet there, and falling fast, and the Alleghany full ofice. The Swiftsure, which left here a few days siace for Pittsburg, was unable to get farther than about 20 miles above Marietta, on account ef the ice, and returned yesterday. We learn from the St. Louis Republican of the 24th, that the Mississippi opposite that place is falling, supposed to be occa- sioned by the ice above. It had fallen in the last 36 hours about 12 inches. It was previously very low. The weather on the day previous became colder. ‘The same paper remarks: The Illinois river is en- tirely closed by ice. Captain Dewitt, of the Pana- ma, left his boat and came down to St. Louis in the stage. The St. Louis New Era says :—‘‘We learn trom Jefferson City, that the steamboat Iatan, which had on board a number of members of the Legisla- tare, was stopped by the ice at the mouth of the Gasconade river. The members were compelled to disembark, aad to walk the balance of the way to Jeflerson Ciy. The steamboat Jone, on her downward trip, was_ sto; above Jeflerson City by the ice.”"—Cin. Gaz, Nov. 20.
