Lovisvit.txe, Nov. 6, 1842. Masquerades in the West—Manners of New Or- leans travelling up the Mississippi. Dear Sin :— Your correspondent for some time past has ne- glected to give you regular advices of the things go- ing on in our good city, and I confess I rather won- der at it, for certainly our fashionables never cut a “greater stifl” than they are doing at present; not content with “happening ins’’'ateach others houses, by which they avoid the troublesome cerimonial of invitations to common folks; they have laterly taken it into their heads to imitate the actions of Tather a suspicious portion of God’s creation, i, ¢.the New Orleans creoles, and give masquerade balls, the last touch of fashion and ot t elegance. A few ot the “chosen spirits” assembled about a week since at John Thompson’s, where, to their in- finite satisfaction, res ately rendered them- selves quite poetic : we wever, was but a pious elude to what has followed. ‘The affair at Bob hort’s, last night “came off” with great eclat.— Neverin my He did I see such a group assembled. The masks were well chosen and fitly did they show forth on the exterior what wasin the interior of the wearer’s heads. Monkeys were seen chattering away at each other, gvidenyly. pleased at their own eloquence: sheep blating fo eir own philosophy: dogs talking Italian at their rnisiresse’s heels: goats openly avowing their passion: calves ba-a-ding for nourishment: and hogs crying outin French, oui, at the evident elegance of the company. “Here ike be seen the elegant whiskered ey —Peter Alexandes, as he pompously declaime: with a nonchalance air, peculiar to himself—hat in hand upon the gaities of a winter in Copenhagen and the agreeable manners of the European princes.— There the handsome Karl Sampson, disguised as a young fat calf! (happy choice !) traced out his pedi- en to the tall Miss Emerald Green, who was evi- ently interested i in the recital, and fully did he con- vince her that his stock was ancient and himself “thorouzh bred.” The lordly Hugenot, and the le- gitimate descendant of Die Vernon, shone forth re- splendant among the ari~ tocracy of the land. The fascinating “lady in black” eloquently expa'iated to young Diamond upon the evils of ‘fortune hunting” an 8 turning out sosoon. ‘The little coquette, ara eee, once so brilliant, but now_ so changed, trequenily spoke of bank officers. The walle athered Miss Peacock, the Missouri belle, was witty, sarcastic and agreeable. Mr. Cowslip, the flatterer, was heard to congratulate Mrs. Daisy ope n her “interesting situation,” and to condema iss Rosebud for making such a bustle. While cir culating round many a “double entendre” was heard, eno be to cull blushes to even the most pious cheek. And often did I think that these certainly were the latter days. Y. Philadelphia, [Correspondence of the Herald.] Puu.apecruta, Nov. 9, 1842. The End of the World Postponed—-Great Row among the Lawyers—Unrehearsed Stage Effects— Tragi-Comedy—D. P. Brown and “m. Rawle —Exciting Scene—Judge Barton and Doran—Boz —Committee with Hearts in their Hands, §c. Sr :— The end of the world is not nigh yet (Parson Miller to the contrary notwithstanding ) We can- not yet realise the happy time when “the lion and the lamb shall lie down together.’”” Horses will stop kicking—cats scratching, and lawyers quarrelling, before that blissful day arrives. It is certain that the happy epoch has been postponed at least half a century, by the rich and glorious scene which took place last evening at the office of Alderman Gris com, in this city. The occasion was a proceeding against John W. Simes, whe is accused of tamper- ing with a Juror, on the McEwen and Shee case, and the actors were David Paul Brown, Esq and am Rawle, Esq , as principal comedians, whilst idience were compesed of the luwyers, citi- id loaters, who crowded the office After William L. Hirst, Esq. of counsel for McEwen, had finished his address to the Alderman, he was next addressed by William White, Eq of counsel for Mr. Simes. Mr. White conimenced by wiluding to the case on the defence of McEwen and Shee (one of the counsel on which side was Mr. Rawle) and spoke of “the disrepuable tricks that had been Pei to to briog about an acquittal of the defen- ants.” Mr. Rawte—That’s personal (to the Alderman.) I insist sir that no personalities be allowed. Alderman Griscom—Personalities between coun- sel must pe avoided. Mr. Wurre—(to the Alderman)—To you, sir, no personalities shall be addressed, but to and of Mr. Rawle I'll speak as I please Mr. Rawte—(Throwing himself back in the chair and frettiug like a bottle of ginger pop with the cork tied down)—This is what I get for coming into the Crimipal Court, to be insulted by a puppy, nothing but the most foul mouthed and beastly per sonalities. Mr. Brown—-(To the Alderman) —There, sir, what do you say to that—Let personalities be re- strained. Mr. Rawte—Well, by G—d, sir, if I have been personal, its you that’ have forced It out of me by your continued falsehoods during the whole soene of this case. Mr. Brown (as cool as a pound of butter sur- Pee with ice)—The man that imputes falsehood to me li Mr. Rawte—I have called you a liar, and nowyou shall take the blow with ix, (seizing a piece of pa- per, crushing it into a roll and rezehing over to strike Mr. Brown, but in consequence rotundity in the belt and want of extensibility in his le; Be, not being able to reach him, but waving the roll inthe air infront of Mr. Brown’s face, and about a foot and half from the end of his nose)—There, sir you have taken a lie and ablow, and you may add ae to your other accomplishments. if Beowe,« who during the whole course of this! Tadicrous scene remained as calm as a summer's morning, and looked as amiable as a dish of ice cream with a spoon in it)—BntI have not been struck no blow touched me. Mr. Rawte—Weell, if I did not strike you I in- tended it—Consider, sir, that I called you a liar and struck you. Mr. Browx—Consider I’ve been struckl I may as well consider that you have been shot. Auperman (waking up)—Gentlemen, this con- duct must not be allowed—I must bind you over to keep the peace. Rawte—Yes, bind me over, bind me over for the assault and battery. Browx—No assault has been committed. Rawte—If [did not strike I intended it—bind m« over for the assault and buttery. Brown, (to the Alderman)—I should be sorry, sir, it T boand him over for an intention. Rawse—(Who appearrd to be as anxious to be bound over for the assault as Dogberry was to be written down an ass)-—ButI intended it, and the wind blew in his face from the attempt—bind me over for the assault and battery. A.perman— You must be bound over to keep the peace. Rawie—Sir, I'l have nothing more to do with this exse, to be continually insulted by two puppies, (threwing down his books and walking out of the office like an offended turkey cock.) Thus ended the first act, and ahe curtatn fr to the disappoint nent of a full and i ee au ditory, who wished to see the fun continue: During the whole cou se of this remarkable dis- play Mr. Rawle wa Lott Ly angry, and ready to ‘eat his own head”— whilst Mr Brown was calm, cool, placid and wrting, without the least appear: ance or symptom of a ood | thirsty state of mind. Act the second took place the same evening —It was aprivate representation, to which the public were notinvited. Itis understood that new ay appeared on the scene, to wit—Josiah Randall, Ey and Eli J. Price Exq.,who obligingly offered their “mediation,” which was accepted by the contend- | ing arts by means of which a reconciliation was cted, and the warriors mutually retired upon their laurels. The whole aflair was got up in first rate style, with good scenery and appointments, and the act or played their parts with a truthfulness and ene: gy worthy of # better cause. In matters and things there is not much stirrine here of importance. His Honor Judge Barton ho! his last session of the Criminal Court ths term — He declined giving a charge to the jury at the con- mencement of the term, but sig: ified his intenti« of giving them some ot his views in relation '« criminal justice at its close. The “Notes,” by Boz, were looked for with con- siderable interest, The "gentlemen * “who had ther hearts in their hands” have had them in their mouths for sometime, but now that they have es- caped the fla apeliaton they expected, their fears have subsided. I saw Colonel Thomas B Fiorenee, the leader ot this band of patri to day, and he looked quite natural. Ate revoir. Suue. Newark. Newark, Nov. 10, 1842 Opening of the Season— Splendid Fashionable Move- ments in Newark. Dear Bennettr— Permit me to give you a short notice of a party, the first of the season, that came off last evening, which I think will be quite interesting to your nume- rous readers in this city. The party was given by a Mr. A——n, aretired Philadelphia jeweller, who has just moved into a new and splendid house, situated in the lower part of Broad street Mr. A. and his accomplished lady have the honor of “leading off in the fashionable season.” Mrs. A. did the honors ina very quiet and agreeable manner. She was very geateelly dress- ed, ina nich light silk. Mr. A.’s easy and gentle- manly manners were observed by all, and highly appreciated. There were about two hundred present, very ma- ny from your city. Amongst them I observed the tall and majestic figure of Miss A. niece of our host; alsot her beautiful sister, Mrs. R. both drews- ed in black, with bright black eyes, and hair Whose glossy black to shame might bring ‘The plumage of the raven’s wing. Miss N., of White street, was by many consi- dered the be’le of the party. She was dreesed in white, with her hair very neatly adjusted, and orna- mented with a beautiful silver wreath, and was very fortunate in taking captive the heart of Mr. R., which pleasure Mr. R. would not have had but for the circumstance of a certain Mr, who shall be nameless, having been detained in New York by sickness. Miss F., of New York, created quite a sensation amongst the Newark beaua. She wore a white skirt with a black bodice, and such ringlets as the god of love might choose for bowstrings, and they felldown ona neck of such faultless whiteness as might cre- ate jealousy in a bust of Venus, done in Parian marble. She received the attentions of Mr. J. of Broad street, to whom rumor has given the wey amiable character of being fond of his ma. He sometimes has an outbreak of patriotism, and talks much of arene his ceuntry in the capacity of a midshipman. But his filial love is in all cones suffi. ciently strong to induce him to stay with his ma. His long hair and elegant manners reminded me of Burns’ address to Apollo:— O, wad some power the giftie gie us To see ourselves as others see us, It wad from monie a blunder free us. Miss J. and Miss C. of New York, were very much admired by all present. Mr. G. of Washing- tonstreet, New York, was there with his bride, who is remarkable forher neat style of dressing. Miss W. of Newstreet, was never seen to b-tter a van- tage. She is quite celebrated for her talents and accomplishments, ma is areputed heiress, She was very neatly dre in white, without any tin- sel. She received much attention from Mr. G of New York, who has the modesty to fancy himeelf a saint. He has a countenance that isremarkable for the lambent piety ard holy intell gence in its ex- pression. He once resided in this city, and left to occupy a wider held. Mrs. K ot New street, grac- edthe party with herpresence When single the was the belle of the town. Her rich Quaker dress was in better taste than py thing else 1m the rooms, Her hair was fiuely braided, and done up behind in the ricuest Parisian style. "Her interesting husband was also present. Miss W. of Cedar street was, as she had good reason to be, happy, receiving as she did, the constant and undivided attention of a young and prosnerata_ merchant of B street His atten- tionsto to Miss W, were envied by every lady pre- sent. Rumor says thathe has broken more hearts than any otherman in Newark. Whata sad thing to bea handsome man, with honeyen words! By the way, he is said to have finished his #eademical course, and gridnated with distinguished honora, and with the decided approbation of the entre fac- athe Miss W. has a very pleasing countenance, a Eyes that send soit magic to the soul— Cheeks touched with the deep cornelian dye Lipa more beautiful from words that roll Forth sweet translations from her star-lit eye. The Misses S. of_N. street, have strong clnims to the title of belle he evening The eldest was dressed in black, short sleeves, and long white gloves. She is a splendid girl, and made many a heart ache, as she cast aroun her glances from the kissing witchery of her bright black eyes. She is as amiable asshe is pretty. None knew her but to love her— None name her but to praise. The nger, as gentle as the timid fawn, with a face as bright asa vision in a tairy’s dream, where a thousand little graces disport themselves, was hap- gly well provided for through the attentions of Mr. of B. street, a young man quite celebrated for his strong attachment to children, which, of course, makes him quite sreaee with the married ladies, and the atoresaid G. with whose attentions she was a) ntl bo pleased, much to the annoy- ance of Mr. S. who seems te occupy the first place in her aflectious, at least wishes to. ‘In short, a perfect sylph :— “ Her face ‘That veils the vestal planet's hue ; Her eyes two beamlets from the moon, Set floati g in the welkin blue.” She and her sister are not much celebrated in fashionable circles, but they are destined to a bril- liant career. The Elizabethtown ladies fully sustained the repu- tation of their delightful village. Mire R , of Park Place, was much admired for her sweet face and quiet unobtrusive manners. She had the honour of mr. A's arm. | I wa: iced ‘0 a Mrs. S. who has the reputation of making poetry occasionaily. She has some genius I should think; at least, the ec- centricities ot a genius. The dancing commenced rather late, but was kept up with spirit until the company dispersed. Although an old man, my head frosted by nearly seventy winters, I am constrained to acknowledge that woman! whatever our age—our disposition thy beauty isthe charm that binds man to thy will, “is in vain to wrestle with this conqueror, for it the impulse of nature. If agreeable, I will keep an eye on fashionable movements in this place, and keep you informed from time to time. Spectator, More Lanp FROM THE Iptans.—The Detroit Advertiser announces the return of Mr. Stuart, the Superintendant of Indian Affairs, who left that city two months since to hold a treaty with the Chy wa Indians ot Lake Superior. He — in consummating a freaty Laie them, by which the United States obtain ry e accession to the public domain. All the Tadian ands within the bounda- ries of the State of Michigan are now ceded to the United States. The Advertiser sa By this treaty, about 15,000,000 of about 8,000,000 of which ‘lie in Michigan, ai (i, 000° 00 in Wisconsin. —There will now be opened up to the enterprize of our citizens, the extensive can ye- luable min: ral region on Lake Superior, containing the purest Fa Ra anywhere known, and besides, in the Vieux rts district, where minerals were uot supposed to exist, silver ore has been discover- ed; butas no thorough examination has been made as to its quality or abandance, we are authorized only to say that the indications are thought favor- able. The inexhaustible fishy ries of Luke Superior will now also be within the control of our people ; and we hazard little in saying that a vast and lvcra- tive business will soon be established both in mining and in fisheries, between us and that hitherto bat partially known region of country. It is said that much of the soil between Lake Superior and Green Bay, is of excellent quality—that it Is all well water- ed, ‘and its lakes and rivers abound with fish. All the country between Lake yy and the Missis- sippi, for some distance above Fort Snelling, is now purchased by th ted States, except a small and valuable disirict yet owned by the Menomontes, be- ‘ween Green Bay and Fort Winnebago. Itis said hat by this treaty, some provisions have been made for ameliorating the condi ion of the Indians; and it «gratitying, also, that those wretched people begin yappreeiate the value of civilization, and mnifest desire to have their children educated ; und from e known benevolence of the President und Seere- ary ot War, and the head of the Indisaberenu, have © not good reason to hope that thei. eflorts to this id, shall no. be waging? We ow the poor Indian uch ine very respect, aud it is gratifying to witness Jat Vely Many of our most respec! fey ellow citizens seem resolved to redeem the obligation.
