J. G. Bennerr, Esq. :— Elder Swan, the lion of the day, continues his ministerial labors in the First Baptist Church in this city, but with decidedly poor success—very few have been converted, under his preaching here, and the case stands hard against him, Indeed he has excited feelings of opposition among the great mass of the reasoning community, ‘since he has as- sailed men of respectable character, by pronounc- ing epithets against them, when there was no cause to induce the act, save a mere difference of opin- inn; which difference he has magnified to that fo- cus which renders it ‘‘ diabolical” and ‘“ Christless” in the eye of his peculiar camera, as also in the sight of a: church. says that he is right, for ‘God pare tells kent aad tells every one to repent and be baptised, or they can never reach the kingdom of heaven.”— And this doctrine he holds forth against other deno- minations of Christians who do not baptise by im- mersion—as though this and this alone had sole power to save umbug! absurdity! Does Elder Swan know what he preaches? e opine not.— The whole drift of his discourses, are ‘‘ repent and be baptised, or hell and damnation await you.” No- thing said about committing sin afterwards. Now we ask in the name of all that’s wonderful, if all mankind do not commit ma and if they are proof against it after being baptised ? Our own ob- servation convinces us to the contrary. Why, then, does not the reverend divine attempt to reconcile all men through good willto the truth of the ever- lasting gospel, instead of braniing, them with here- tical invectives? He says, ‘od Almighty has marked out my course, and I, as an instrument in his hands, warn you of his wrath, unless you repent and are baptised. I shall attack deviltry in whate ver shape religion or not—and shall ‘ wring’ it up in its true co- lors.” He advises those who have taken the trou- ble to copy from his sermons, to erect over their doors a sign with the followi npeription 5 $ and Intelligence Office for Hell! !” But considering the publications that have appeared concerning him as strictly true, would, or would not, the enquirer at the office get the desired information 1 We would quote a few of his random, imaginative, ex, ~ sions, were it not for the fact that they have 80 often repeated by him as tobecome stale, and ra longer interesting here. Would that our anticipa tions could have been realized, and we have been able to quote such a sermon, from him as was allu- ded to in ourlast. Alas! itis not in the maw. Now let us leave Swan, and refer to something more werthy of ouresteem. The Methodist church, under the supervision of a Mr Thompson, a native of England, is a complete paradise when compa: with thé old Baptist church in this city. and a profound firaaneat of religion. ‘We have but little more to add. Your readers will see by what has already been written, that New London is now the focus of a great religious excitement, and that though Swan, with stentorian voice, shook th the walls of his church, in making his staving updeclarations asto what he would accom- plish, as yet ‘‘ drags his slow length along.” May pure and undefiled religion prosper, both rere and elsewhere, whether Swanism does or not. Horsst1. Literary Notices. Tur Cuay Minstrer..—This purports to be the off- spring of ‘that patriotism which catches its inspira- tion from the immortal God” (Clay). It is one of the poetic agents to elevate Henry Clay to the Pre- sidency ; and the following are samples that will make Horace, Shakepeare and others tremble for their laurels. The following, for example, is very much in the vein of Shakspeare :— But our state cooks began That the people through he thle ve vast country, All wanted food as we! ‘That loafed within the nue ‘That loafed within thechair, That loafed within thechair, That loafed within the chair.
