Arrival of R. M, Johnson—His Address—The La- dies—Military— Post Office Removal and Re-ap- pointment James Gorpon Brennerr, Esq. :— Dear Six,— Col. Richard M. Johnson, Ex-Vice President of the United States, arrived in our village late on Thureday evening, and took up his lodings at the American. The committee appointed to wait on him, was composed of gentlemen of different po- jitical opinions, among whom, was L. Sherwood, Esquire, a distinguished member of our bar. Col. Johnson, at two o’clook, P. M. yesterday, was escorted to the court house, by the committee, where he delivered an address to a very large con- course of people, who entertain diflerent political creeds, Mr. Suerwood, alter touching brietly upon the character and incidents in the lite of Col. Jonn- son, presented the veteran soldier and statesman to his teilow-citizens. ‘Lhe court room was tilled to @ jam. There were a few ladies present, amon whom Lsaw Mrs. P. H. M***s, Mrs, L. S¥*e=m, and Mrs. H. R*****n, and her daughter Helen. Col. Johnson avoided entering into poliues in his address, but amused his hearers very much with some of his eary history, aud accounts of his sev- eral changes through lite. ‘The only thing poliucal in his speech, was this. He said he *‘ always aced, not exciusively for party, but trom the purest mo- lives, for the good of his country, and thought just as much ot a whig, as he did of a democrat, pro- viding they had done him or his country no injury, but at the same time, would a little rather people would vote the democratic ticket.” He mentioned our lameated Harrison, a8 ove of the bravest men with whom he had ever met. After the meeting adjourned, our military com- pany paid him the honor due to his meri Japt. Segoine, in addressing the Colonel, said—* We feel proud in rendering honor to whom hvnor is due.” Vol. Jonson being quite tatigued trom his jauat the day betore, did not aetain the company long. He apdressed them first, and then shook hands wiih each individual meinber. Mr. Henry H. Bostwick, who was in March last removed from his office as mail agent, between Au- burn and Utea, has been re-instated, in place of Mr. Oscar Burgess, removed. Mr. Burgess was ap pointwd on the removal of Mr. Bostwick, but it seems that he couldn’t stick. He received his walking papers, (us Col. Johnson says) and Mr Bostwick his appointment this morning, to the no small gratitication of all parties, Hawk Hartford, [Corespondence of the Herald.) Hartrorp, Oct. 29, 1842. Weather—Trade—Agricultural Fair—Ladies Fair —Beautiful Marchants des Modes—U. 8. Hotel. James G. Bennett, E'sq.:— ‘The weather has been for the last four weeks“ all around my hat”; to-day as warm as June, to-morrow cold enough to make ice; and the next damp and foggy as the Maumee Valley. Consequently, it has been somewhat sickly here as well as elsewhere along the valley of the Connecticut. But as cold weather sets in, we have fewer cases of sickness; and business, which, owing to the unsettled state of the weather, has been somewhat backward this fall, revives; and with it the spirits of our worthy cii- zens, which, owing to causes just mentioned, have been for a month or two past at low water mark. The Fair of the Hartford County Agricultural So- ciety, accounts of which you have probably ere this received through the medium of the press, was well filled with contributions from our citizens, and others, and visited by thousands who seemed pleased with the specimens of genius, industry, and ingenui- ty, here displaved. While on the subject of Faira, we wul just make mention of another Fair “ got up” by the tair for the benefit of the Orphan Asylum in thiscity. We believe that we never saw 80 many of the fairat a Fair before. Surrounded as we weie by such a galaxy of beauty, it is out of our power to y ing Now rom city references, at- ‘let for defendants, su “ware | HABSDEN & CO. describe ail; we must therefore content our-elves with describing a few oi these ‘ Daughters of Beauty.” First, we notice Mary H » and her lovely companion, (a stranger to us _by name) who together had charge of the P. Office depar:ment. While looking at and thinking of these two noble girls, we could not help wishing that the Postmaster General would place them at the head of his branch here, vice the present cross-grained, sour-taced jo- cumbent, Sure are we that (judging trom the man- ner in which they acquitted themselves of their duty there) neither Uncle Sam nor the public interest would sufleria their hands. Next we saw that ami able and good hearted girl Lydia H—, who will make a most excellent Gompanion for some one, if there is any truth in the science of phrenology ; and we believe our observations on the human tace di- vine don’: deceive us, and that the face is surely an index to the mind and heart. As most of the others were strangers to the writer of this, he will only mention two others who appear- ed to him so much superior to nine-tenths of wo- mankind, that he cannot help noticing them. The first wasa young, but not remarkably handsome girl, about twenty, with a face beaming with such intelligence and good natu::, und such sparkling black eyes, and glossy hair of the same hue, as to cause every One as they passed her stand on the eastern side of the ha‘ if to exclaim, “ who is that lovely stranger?” for such she was at least to most of us. ‘The next and last of whom we shall at present speak, wasa young and decidedly beautifal girl of sweet sixteen, er thereabouts; her station was on the east side of, and next to the Fortune-teller’s desk Hername we do not know, but wish we did; a pleasant acquaintance she would be, we are Our old friend, Captain David H., is still with us; and what with his everlasting good humored face. and humorous stories, he is ever welcome. Should ou ever come this way, Bennett, on your “ road to Boaton,” be sure to take the steamer Phoenix, of which Captain H. is the commander, and if you fel fc your money’s worth, we'll agree to pay the bill. That Bull has gone to Poquonock; friends Green and Alford finding him rather a costly as well as un- ruly boarder, have both -oncluded that they would hereafter confine themselves to their legitimate bu- siness, and not speculate in bulls again. The * Bridge Campany” are as regardless of the public interest and their own duty as ever, When shall we get from thema decent foot-path? Sorry are we that frend Alford is about to retire fromthe management of the United States Hotel ; and sorry will be every man, woman, and child, that ever sojourned a day with him. Ot his sueces- sor we know nothing. This we do know, that neither he or any other man can do better than his redecessor. May success and prosperity ever attend oth Elisha S. Alford and his amiable Indy. 1GMA. Court of Common Pleas, Before Judge Ing Oct. 31.—Wm. B.
