Messrs, Boorman, Johnston & Co. find occasionally among their long list of debtors, some whoare disposed to refer them to Mr. Lord’s pamphlet for an answer to their claims. It will be remembered that the Erie Railroad became insolvent on the ist of April last, and neglected to pay the interest on the State credit loaned to them, in consequence of which the Comptroller has advertised the road for sale on the Ist of December next. ‘The 1th of the coming month, November, is the day fixed for the annual meeting of the {stockholders of the Erie Railroad Company. The second Tuesday of October jnstant, was the day appointed, but the directors now in power, being doubtless desirous of “ holding over, postponed until the 14th proximo, between twelve and one o’clock, being one short hour for the assembling and ac. tion of 3,000 stockholders. The companyfhas,been in the hands of family cliques, which have monopolized various tions of the road. Yet on that day it failed on its interest and owed contractors for work donesubsequent to November, according to the same document, $500,000.— Now what was done with those stocks ? they sold? and who got the proceeds ? Is it not worth while for the creditors to see to this. When one of the contractors came to New York last spring to get money to pay off the sub-contractors, he returned, offered them 20 per cent of their claims on condition that they took due bills for the remainder, and gave receipts in full. Again, statements are published by which it appears the Eastern end of the road has earned $10,900 in Septem- ber, yet the assignees have declared a dividend of but 5 f creditors out of the nett earn- \es,for five months! Now, either the amount due first class creditors was very large or else the expenses of working that forty-six miles of Railroad are without a precedent for extravagance. This is a matter requiring investigation. All these things and many more which we may hereafter point out, require the attention of the stock- holders, All interested should vote in person, to avoid trusting any one with his proxy. Why have not the As- signees ond Directors called a meeting of stockholders and creditors before this, and laid before them a clear ex- hibit of the affairs of the company ? Had this been done, the great expense, amounting, we understand, to more than $6000 of suits and judgments to which the company has been subjected, might all have been avoided.
