YOUNG, { Secretaries. ot ATTEND TO YOUR COLDS.—At this season year itis almost impossible to avoid taking colds ‘of all the precaution used; the variable state of the weather for the last few weeks, has been extremely unfa- vorable to those who are troubled with weak lungs, or who ere inthe least predisposed to pulmonary complaints. All thote who are suffering under these distressing com- laints I would advise, by all means, to go toJ. Pease & n, 45 Division street, and get some of their valuable Clarified Essence of Hoarhound Candy. I was induced to (ry its efficacy last winter, for an extreme soreness of the chest, occusioned by a severe cold which I had pre- viously taken, and it performel a radical cure in two days, . The New York American has had the superlative folly to denominate our exposure of that rotten company, ,the American Life & Trust, an“unwarrantable exposure of a private concern.” Not only private individuals have been + plundered of immense sums by that iniquitious association —but the public; and the national character has suffered immensely by the foul corruption engendered by them — It is an “unwarrantable exposure” because the following people, the friends and relatives of that clique, have got most of the money of innocent people, and some of them spentit in riot and luxury :— John Duer, Esq. . ‘Anson Blake, Esq. Thoms EB. Davis, Esq. . Daniel Webster, Esq. . Grand Island, Webster & Whites speculation . ‘Willis Hall, Esq. . Joseph Hoxie, Morris Robinson, Esq y Charles A. Davis, Esq..... Benj. F. Butler, Esq. James Watson Web! J.L. & 8. Joseph. Col. Jas. B. ‘Murray, J; Bunt Now can the ‘American point out the difference between this concern and the Life & Fire Bond Co. of 1826? The late Henry Eckford was President of that Company, J. 8 ‘Swift, Vice President and Matthew L. Davis, Secretary. When that concern exploded, the American was daily fill- ‘ed with the grossest personal abuse ofthe parties engaged in it, and the contemptible clique of which it is the organ, ‘was instrumental in having the parties indicted. Eckford, Swift, Barker, Vermilyea, Franklin, M. L. Davis, Mark Spencer, G. W. Wetmore and others, were all indicted for aconspiracy to defraud, by a grand jury, of which the fol- lowing gentlemen were members :—Jonathan Goodhue, foreman, E. W. Laight, A. O. King, D. E. Tylee, N.Weed, E. 8. White, J. Lang and some others. During the indict- ment and trial, the American was constantly filled with inflammatory matter, calculated to bias the result, and on one occasion contained the following :— Ofthe necessity, the absolute necessity, that some one voice should be raised in support of the laws of the coun- try, alleged to have been violated by men of the highest standing, no stronger ¢ vidence need be given than the si- lence, or when not silent, the palliating publications of most of the city papers in ‘relation to the late indictment. ‘A thousand miserable wretehes might have been indicted, and no editor would have thought it incumbent upon him to rupprese their names. On the contrary, their names would have been blazoned forth, accompanied with much bP aad abhorrence of the heinousness of stealing rani respectable as ever sat, say, upon their oaths, that _ rovable cause to believe igh station, extensive connections, wealth and influence, heve tlolated the laws and present them for tris aoa cairo ilentor palliating. Past g charaeter Ug ape “gettal peereaiption, ani an undue bles Beeegttte e given to public opinion. As far as we are concerned, jus all be as blind towards great as towards little delinquent ‘This was the virtuous resolution and idle vaunt of a creature who, when the tables are turned, and his own friends instead of being the victims, are the perpetrators, calls the expose an unwarrentable exposure of private con- cerns. Why were the affuirs of Schemerhorn, Ogden and numerous others hushed up, or “palliated?” Because they were of high standing, and the virtuous American is no longer as “blind towards great as towards little delin- quents.” ‘The following are the comparative returns of two ofthe Montreal Banks :— Baxx or Montaeat axp City Baxx or Mowtnear. The banks in the Western part of N. York have ako been discounting liberally for the new crops, which must shortly be increased in volume on their way tomarket. ‘The determination of most of the western peo- pleto receive nothing but specie, or the bills of specie paying banks, for their produce, is rapidly filling the channels of trade with a sound currency, and the dealers are now finding their way gradually to the Atlantic cities for the purchase of goods. They come for the most part with cash, and buy small quantities. ‘The opening of the Railroad from Albany to Boston has given the dealers of Western New-York, and of the ‘Western portions of New England, such facilities for quickly supplying themselves from Boston, and comple- ting their assortments, that comparatively very little capi- tal is now requisite to transact the same business which Instead of making a long and ex- pensive journey twice in the year to purchase a six months’ supply, orders for small amounts can be quickly executed. Another effect of the rapidity of communica- tion with Boston from all quarters, has been to injure the retail trade of the neighboring towns. of communication can always save the expense of a ride to Boston in the difference of price even in very small amounts. The general effect is, therefore, to concentrate trade at one point, and to scatter it through the year more than formerly, requiring a far less capital for its conduct. ‘This gives the appearance of less business, when really, at the close of the year, the gross amount will be as large In those years there was a period of about six weeks in the fall and spring, when dealers crowded in together and made their purchases in large amounts.— For the remaining portion of the year, nothing would be In the fall they gave notes which they paid in the spring, giving a new note for that which they Now the purchases that make up the sum of that note are made at different times, and paid for at the ‘This largely reduces the quantity of individual pa- per, growing out of the business done, diminishes the ca- pital employed, lessens the expenses, lowers prices, and puts the whole trade upon a more healthy and lucrctive was formerly the case. Persons on the line heard from them. ‘The increased facilities of communication, brought about by lapse of time, may be illustrated by an anecdote. At the close ofthe revolutionary war, the commander of the French fleet, then lying in Massachusetts Bay, wished to communicate with a French vessel in Philadelphia, by the safest and most speedy mode. For this purpose he em- ployed Capt. Eaton, of Dorchester, Mass,, a soldier of the revolution, to carry the despatch. An answer was ob- tained, at great expense, in the then remarkable time of fourteen days. It may now be done in two days, and pro- fitably tocarriers. This vast difference has been brought about by the progress of the country in wealth, popula- tion and trade. If our revolutionary fathers had underta- ken to build a Railroad from Boston to Albany, they would have found the speculation a ruinous one ; yet now it is The time will come, centuries hence, when every oounty in New York will have a Rail- road ; but there are now more public works than the trade willsupport.
