The Genuine Extract of Sarsaparilia, a ve THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY Or tue Crry or New York. THERE 18 NO ARTICLE IN THE MATERIA M of which so many spurious and inert prepara tions, have been offered, as parilla. Indeed, many members of the medical profession £ mod of de- nying in toto, the efficacy of this invaluable drug, and they have been led to this disbelief of its virtues, by the wretehed mixtures which have been and are at present palmed on the public, as genuine extracts of the article. The College desire no stronger and more intelligible Proof of the worthlessness of these mixtures, than that evidence which is afforded by the very advertisements of their mannfacturers. The frequent extravagant pufts which are thrust before the public, bear on their front the im) ‘of the most impudent quackery. Powers are as- o to Sarsaparilla which it does not really possess, and certificates of alleged cures, represented to have been ef- fected by its use, are paraded at length, whilst every edut physician, well knows that no such results could by any possibility have followed from the use even of the most carefully prepared extracts of Sarsaparilla. It is under: po My posntocaeer a ae wi reinstr aa their extended plan of suppressing all descriptions of me- dical im; are, that the “College of Medicine and Phar- macy” offer to the notice of the public, ‘Tue Genvive Extnact or Sansaraniia. This article has been prepared at great expense, accord. ing to the new process :f the Parisian pharmaceutists, and is confidently denominated the only really valuable prepa- ration of Sarsaparilla now offered for sale in t Together with the active principle of the Smilax offic 1—the best species of the root—the College have incor- rated that uliar modification of sugar, which has een termed gi ‘hizin. Inthe “Extracts” of the nos- trum.-venders and certain ists, the common extract of liquorice is the chief in, ient, aid can readily bede- tected. But it is proper to state that in most cases this extract of liquorice is adulterated, and contains copper de- rived from a 44 which aS decoction Ne no Toot zi evaporated. ¢ College wish thus particularly to gua the public against the pernicious tendency of mixtures, containing larg. juantities of this polsontd l liquorice. The priate quantly of the peculiar Sryatllieatle principle, Pro) juant aliar oc: izable principle, Obtained from thet val vegetable bitter, Gentian, (so called from Gentius, King of I \yria, who first discovered its great virtues.) A small portion of the active constitu- ents of the Laurus Sassafras, another vegetable, whose efficacy as an alterativeand purifier of the blood is well known, has likewise been added. These several articles have been incorporated, and their peculiar principles compounded in a highly concentrated form, andthe re- sult has been the production of a vegetable alterative and tonic, unequalled betel eae and efficacy. The College merely auld the following extract from the ica edition just published of Brande’s ‘Practical Dictionary of the Materia Medica :”— “ This article has been prescribed in chronic rheuma- tism—in_ obstinate cutaneous eruptions—in indolent ulcers—in glandular affections—in diseases of the bones, attended by dull aching pains, tumors and nodes—wasting of the flesh—and it has proved a valuable remedy, and has sometimes effected a cure where other alteratives have been long administered in vain, and when the diseased state of the system has been of many years duration. In the after- treatment of syphilis, and in cases where mercury has inju- viously affected the system, it esses powers not hitherto observed in any other artiele of the Materia Medica.” Sold in since Borties, al 75 cents each. “In Cases oF HALP-a 8, $3 50. + a ONE DOZEN 6 00. LORD ASHBURTON.—AlIl those persons who aretriendly to his Lordship, and the object of his mission, and who had no opportunity of attending the dinner at the‘Astor,” will please meet at the “Crystal,” (corner of vec and Broad street) this day, between 11 and 1 ov) 0G-100 MINUTE GUNS WERE FIRED tLAST night in honor of the return of the whig members of Con- gress, and every body has been talking about the compli- aoe dinner to Lord Ashburton, just as though in this ublican city every man was not a Lord! ‘here are a good sprinkling of “Lords of Creation” who dine every day at thejrenowned Florences Nos. 239 and 240 Broadway; his celebrated restaurat is the most splendid affair in the city, embellished as costly and neatas a Tur- kish Harem. The “Bloods” are fond of his oysters, they open rich, fresh from their native beds—his Wines and Li- quors are choice and recherche. Such of our southern friends as have not lionised here are advised to call and “stand not in the order of your going, but go at once.” 0g- THE ARCADE BATH—There is no way in which the introduction of the Croton water is more effica- cious and beneficial in its eftects thaa in the enjoyment of warm Bath, which can at all times be obtained at the Arcade Bath in Chamber street. The cleansing qualities of the water isa decided improvement in thst pleasing, and at the same time healthful luxury. ‘The urbanity’ and gentlemanly demeanor of the proprietor, and the prompt Sad ready attention of those in attendance secure a patron- age to the establishment which the proprieter richly meri 0G- EVERY MAN HAS HIS TROUBLES.—We know of few persons s0 overwhelmed with misery num of the American Museum, and the worst of it is, has no remedy. ‘The peculiar trouble under which he la- bors is produced by a perfect jam and throng of visitors who crowd his immense establishment to such a degree, day and night, that the poor fellow can hardly find room to turn around. He has enlarged his saloon, and added a new room, one hundred feet long to his Museum, but “the cry is still they come” The Mermaid draws its thou- sands, and the other attractions their tens of thousands. Two performances are given in the Lecture Room ever be to separate and distinct audiences, and even then it with difficulty that all are accommodated. Poor fellow ! How we pity him thas to be overwhelmed with cash and customers. 0G CHATHAM THEATRE.—Dr. Bird’s fine tragedy of the Broker ef Bogota, having been some time in prepa tion, is produced to-night for the first time in many years: Mr. Forrest, (for whom the piece was written,) appears as Baptista Febro, the Broker ; J. R. Scott, as Antonio C: barero ; Hield, as Ramon ; Stevens, as Francisco ; Mi: Clifton, as Juana; and Mrs, Hield, as Leonor. The farce of the Turnpike Gate is performed in conjunction with the above, forming an attractive entertainment. Herald Bulletin of News, The Herald Bulletin of News is kept at the north-west corner of Fulton and Nassau streets. On the arrival of the morning mails, at eight o’clock, A. M.—and also of the pie | mails, at fouro’clock, P. M., the latest intelligence from all parts of the world, may be’ found on the Herald Bulletin Board, at this corner. Let every wayfarer stop Advertisements of all kinds taken at the office. Herald General Printing Office, The General Printing Ottice, capable of doing all sorts of printing, such as books, pamphiets, bills, cards of all descriptions, is now open atthe Herald. , entrance MONEY MARKET, Friday, Sept.6,—2 P, M. Affairs look a little better to-day; United States Trea- sury notes sold at 1} per cent premium. Indiana Bonds fall off}, and Harlem Railroad declined a trifle. All other stocks look better, and are better, than they were yester- day. Tt was stated in Montreal, on the 31st ult., that the agencies of the banks of Western Canada in that city, took their notes at one fourth ofone per cent discount. On the same day the prices of exchange on New York were 2} three days, of private drawing. We believe the banks asked more. We learn from the Indiana State Sentinel that the State Bank Directory in session lately, decided that specie pay- ments shell be maintained in good and full faith by all the branches, until, if necessary, they have paid out their last dollar; but of this there it no guarantee. It is, there- fore, for the dealers to continue to be governed by the faci- lities to operate through Ohio agencies. There is every indication among our mercantile classes of +h better business this fall than for some time past. Confidence seems to have gained ground somewhat, al though our large importers fear the protest of a great ‘amount of jobbing paper ere winter secs in. We think that if our jobbers get through without much trouble, business next spring will open with fine prospects. The actual wants of the couutry are large, and must be met. We trust, therefore, that we have touched bottom, and that commercial affairs will now be built upon a sound and healthy basis. There is nothing to prevent this being realised.
