‘re PHILADELPHIA A TLROAD BRIDGE.—As there hus been "so many versions tothe bersieg the Bridge, the following statement, (which ‘er ve isto be relied on) may acceptable to the public :— We understand that the common road bridge at the Falls of Schuylkill, was discovered to be on fire about one o’clock ut night on the morning of the 25th inst., by the toll keeper, a woman, who was confined to her bed bj sickness, Dut whose position enabled her to see throug! the bridge, who gaye the alarm to the watchman, when the fire was confined to a space probably less than the crown ofa man’s hat. ‘The watchman immediately pro- ceeded with a bucket of water (o the spot, and threw it on the fire, but instead of extin; iahing it, they state, it only tended to scatter and extend it, up the sides of the bridge, ‘and befure any more water was procured the old bridge was extensively enveloped in flames, and in a very few ates caught the Reading ad Bridge, which Cresson one corner ofthe old bridge, about the height of the comb of the roof, and in a short time the whole of the wood work of both bridges, together with the toll — were destroyed. The exellent cut stone and abu ments of the Railroad bridge is somewhat injured by the cracking of thi ne from the great heat ofthe ried but whether they will be sufficient fora new superstructure, requires closer examinatian than I had an opportunity of mnie Railroad bridge is said to be between 650 and 700 feet in length in four spans, and will require the best part of a season to rebuild; whether safe to attempt its this season is extremely. doubtful, as all the timber is to be procured, and if not furnished before January, the false work will be exceedingly unsafe on account of the usual ice freshets at that season of the year, which sometimes rise 20 feet in height. Perhaps the eoGitent pappeping: at this time isa misfor- tune to the public, as well as the company, as they bad been in operation but ut one month in trying their reat experiment of carrying coal from Pottsville to the Belaware, as arival to the Schuylkill canel, and durin this month they had transported about 6000'tons of coal, with about 600 cars, making about 10 tons (or three trips) month to each car, and disabled three locomotives — Whether the Railroad ng, maa will feel encouraged to endeavor to rebuild the bridge, with the prospect given them by this trial, is doubtful ‘This unfertw affair is believed to be the work ofan incendiary, as a number of the Company’s hands had, a day or two before, refused to work betWween this bridge and Richmond, in consequence, as they alleged, of uot having been paid for their Inbor for along time, and were murmuring at the Company's using the road without pay- ing them a portion;of ther carnings. TELL. TRUTH. New Popular Novel, THE TEMPTER AND THE TEMPTED. As yet there is but a very small business doing in bills for the steam packet of the Ist, via Boston. Owing to the small supply , the rate is however firm. ‘The Southern business, for the coming season, is likely to feel severely the discredit arising out of the late case of repudiation of contracts on the part of Boorman, Johnston & Co, in the case of Little & Co, not only on account of the transaction itself and the utter instability which it gives to all commercial paper, but of the pertinacity with which it is persisted in, the false statements, and the pre- varication with which it issought to be justified. A Wall street paper has the-following :— stress on the words, “ aa rater edaTor gar sccoaat;’—wetds Gt nies euprioe sage. How could an express contract, as this was, for the purchase of stock be anything more or Jess than a Aran tee for the fulfilment of iton the part of the parties ing it If this clause had read thus: we shane according to the rules of the Stock and Ex- Board, there would be some such meaning in it as is Eimer Bot be attached to it. The contract, thus guaranteed, was made by a broker, » member of the board, and conformed to all its usages.— ‘This contract of the brokers was guaranteed uncondi- tionally, with all its lisbiljties, contingencies and usages, by Messrs. Boorman, Johnston & Cop but it now appears that guarantee was “‘uiter surplussage.” This ine little form in which repudiation h: yet come under our view. ‘The passage of the tariff act has caused a great deal of discussion. lis probable operation, both in regard to re- stricting trade and yielding «revenue, has become matter of much special ation. There ure so many causes in ope- ration to iafluence the sale of goods in the markets, that it is scarcely possible to estimate what will be the yield of any given per centage of duty. ‘The present bill is caleu- lated to be an average of near 35 per cent on the whole im- ports, and to yield @ net revenue of $26,000,000. This is bosed upon the supposition that all circumstances of cur- rency, foreign cost, &c. remaining the same, the imports will amount to the same!as in 1840, This is not so, how- ever. The currency is much more restricted than in that year—and what is more important, is not in a condition to be suddenly inflated in consequence of the suppesed ope- ration of the tariff in preventing the exports of the pre- ciousmetals. Moreover, should such an inflation be brought about, so large a sum cannot be obtained if we may judge from the past. The following table will show the imports and actual duties during years of high tariff’ and immense speculation, as well as in years of low cur- rency : Invontarions, Distivavisuine THe Dowyxs Fon « Sk BARS, WITH THE ACTUAL OR Net Dutivs Receive tx Bacu Yea Advalorum Specific et. duties Free. duties. ae: 1834, 15,166,750 32,710,310 22,966. 1835, 581975 36, Seu ett 1836, f 52,899,954 1837, $1.65 i 1638, 46,524 1102, 825 1839, 40,615,104 25,954,853 1, 19,692,960 21,315,818 15,108,790 ‘Total Imports, 127,919,000 14,847,957 ‘This table, which is official, presents some curious facts —one of which is that the duties in 1899, after a large re- duction had taken place in the rates, were as high as those were in 1886, which arose from an increased import of the dutiable articles, while the import of goods entirely free, declined five per cent. ‘The following table will show the average of each de- scription of goods in the first three years of the series, as compared with the last three - ‘ds. Advalorum. . ties. If from this is deducted the proceeds of the borrowed money, say $160,000,000, which was mostly bor. rowed in 1837-8, it would make the imports of the last four years average but $52,000,000 against $93,000,000 in the first three years, and at the same average duty as the whole amount, would have yielded but $10,000,000. ‘The banking circulation of the country for the present year, will probably not be far from that of the year 1830 when the high tariff went into operation. In order to tee what actually was the operation of the tarift in that year, we may take the following table :. The markets were then all rising under the stimulus of the United States Bank, which more than doubled its dis- counts during the three years subsequent to the passage of the high tariff of 1828. The prices of foreign goods, particularly cotton goods, are much reduced since then, but the minimum of the tariff prevents that reduction from taking any effect here. It is now £208, perton. ‘The duty jn 1828 was the same as that now proposed, viz: $10 per ton, which was nearly 4i percent. The same duty n the same article will now amount to 100 per cent!! In relation to cotton manufactures, the operation is nearly the same, through the effect of the winémum value, which makes the duty in fact specific. ‘The following is at: ble of the quantity, value, and ave- rage cost per yard of prints not exceeding 35 cents per yard, and white cotton not over 30 cents per yard, imported for six years, {rom official document Imronts or Corrox Goops into ri Prints. In 1835, therefore, the duty was 40 per cent, and owing to the reduced foreign cost it will be under the new tariff 100 per cent; on white goods in 1895, the duty was 42 per cent, and will now be 60 per cent; on other articles, as wines, spirits, &c. the duties, which are higher than ever, will operate severely in checking trade. ‘Phe operation which we have here endeavored to point out in some of the leading articles, will be common in a greater or less extent, to all of them. It may therefore be looked upon as in some degree certain, that the Increased duty, ma restricted currency, will check our intercourse with foreign nations, and deprive the government of its income. The effect of the tariff upon those who hold goods, will probably not be so advantageous as they have anticipated — which anticipations have, no doubt, led them to tolerate the present rates of duty. By check- ing the demand for American produce from’abroad, a sux- plus will be retained in the country, which will depress prices and deprive the agricultural classes of their ability to extend their purchases of manufactures. ‘The large stocks of goods on hand may therefore fail of realising those improved prices which, under other cireumstances, a high tariff would effect.
