« BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL. ‘Washington. (Correspondence of the Heral.} ‘Wasurnoton, Friday evening. The Tariff—No action yet. 5 The Senate adjourned thisevening after a session of more than ten hours, without taking the question on the tariff bill. The propensity for debate is un- controlable. Final action is anticipated to-morrow, but some luminous geatlemen, such as Mr. Merrick, may be desirous to make @ speech on both sides of some question, andjthus] throw the matter over to to next week. i The action of the Senatefafter the mail closed this afternoon was somewhat interesting. Mr. Sevier submitted an amendment, striking out all after the enacting clause, and inserting a substi- imposit 1d valorum duty of twenty-five uae. The “amendment was rejected—ayes 21, “ihe Gaamax offered an amendment repealing the sixth section of the Distribution act, (which contains a proviso suspending the a pon ease duties on imports go aboye twenty per een! Mr, AVmenr said that Rast] amendment should prevail, they all knew very well that Congress would be ready to adjourn at once. If the two gub- jects of the revenue and the lands should be again ‘united, no revenue bill could be this session. The question was taken, and the amendment was rejected—yeas 10, nays 30, as follows:— Yeas—Mossrs. Archer, Barrow, Bayard, Clayton, Crit- tenden, Graham, Mangum, Merrick, White, Woodbridge —10. Wright, Young—30. . CLAYTON submitted an amendment to suspend the ten per centum allowed to nine of the States under the Distribution law; and it was agreed te. Various other ame: nts were ed—some of zs were adopted, and the remainder re- jected. : Mr. Woopsury]jsubmitted an additional section to the bill :— v “* Allduties in this bill which onthe first day of Jan. 1843, exceed the rate of fifty per cent. of the average value of merchandise as it has been ry praised at the custom house, during the year I! shall be reduced se asnot to exceed that rate un! January, 1845, when they shall be further reduced, So as not to exceed thereafter the rate of twenty-five per cent.” The amendment was rejected— Yeas 15—Nays 25. .. The vote on Mr. Graham’s proposition is deserv- ing of particular attention, as indicating the men most likely to go against the bill because distribu- tion is given up. The vote on the bill will be a very close one, but it cannot fail to pass. Every friend of Mr. Van Buren in the Senate willvote for it if necessary. , : The pe te passed the Remedial Justice Bill, by 8 vote of 92 to 84, and adjourned about 6 o’clock: Baltimore. {Correspondence of the Herald.] Bavtmore, Aug. 27, 1842. Mr. Eprtor— So far aa we have heard, the late gale was very heavy down the bay. Several vessels were blown ashore, but not injured. Some old sea-dogs say they never came through a severer storm. 1 am sorry to announce the death of General ‘Thomas Emory, one of Maryland’s most worthy citizens. He died on the 24th inst., at Old Point Comfort, of pulmonary disease. To this place he had repaired for health, but death had marked him out. The deceased was a gentleman of the old school, and beloved by all who had the honor and pleasure of his acquaintance, By the ship Roanoke,Smith, at this port yesterday we have advices from’ Rio de Janeiro to the 2lst July. Mr. Breckenridge’s Bema to which the delegation is invited and will attend. The i cting of flour for the past week amounts to 14,502 barrels, and 1417 half barrels. There has been rather a decline in the price of Howard street, which I now quote at $4.874 ; City Millsand jue- hannaare held at $5; from good to fair Maryland Red wheat ranges at 80a 9%9cts. Thecattle market has been well supplied and prices rents from $1,874 to $2,25 per 1000 Ibs. on the hoof. There is no alter- ation in provisions. Tobacco remains at previous rates; whiskey in hhds.’ 21 cents, and in Sbis. 22 cents. At the late Whig Convention several motions were made to nominate a Vice President. Mr. Tal- ba of New York and honest John Davies of Mas- sachusetts, appeared to be the favorite names. It was thought advisable, however, to postpone the nomination of a Vice President until some future period. The weather is oppressively hot, but very healthy. Yours, Ropenricx. Philadelphia, [Correspondence of the Herald.) ‘ Prwavevruia, Aug. 27, 1842. This is another most excessively hot day here, hardly possible for any thing short of salamanders to remain in thisecity. We have had rains almost every night; notwithstanding this, our city is more healthy than ever before known at this season of the year. Quite an active busines, for these times, has been going on along the wharves in flour and grain for the past two or three days. Flour still stands at $5. Wheat has fallen off two or three cents—85 to 90 for good southern, and 90 to 95 for Pennsylvania reds, A good deal of feeling is evinced here by those persons who were aes to the New York Buy excursion, by the Camden and Amboy Railroad i last pagel It ara oe had been pre- concel 6 passengers “ ion” | cheer the foreign vessels of war iyitig in y our pert. as well as the North Carolina, on pasai em. The whole af- fair was in the worst possible condition when Presi- dent Tyler took it in hand in November last. Un- der his direction, and by the unwearied efforts of the War Department, the Quakers, represented Saetiy by the excellent P. E.
