ae td ‘The Grand Island operation was a different affair. That mysterious spot of land situated amid the roaring rapids of Niagara, has been the scene of many curious specula: tions—all of which have gone to destruction as surely and rapidly asthe whirling waters that wash the island, leap overthe mighty fall below. The first, ifnot the most ri- diculous, was the well known attempt of Major Noah to assemble there the wandering tribes of Israc!, over whom he was to preside as high priest. He attempted to raise money from the Jews of all nations for his own aggrandisement. Some few he gathered together, and addressed them inthe theatrical costume of Richard ITf., borrowed for the occa- sion from the Park Theatre. All would not do, however; the material point, the eash, was not forthcoming, and the spe- culation failed. ‘The next wasthe revolutionary specula- tion, and Grand Island became the head quarters of those who wanted to gevern Canada their own way. That failed. Then came Daniel Webster, Esq., towering at the head of amighty spesulation, backed by his eastern friends and satellites, Grand Island was to have been the “ Fl dorado” where, by vigorous applications of paper promises, and the endless multiplication of paper securities, cities were to grow, and business increase until the Island might be covered with guineas in payment of its soil. To start this great blessing, however, money was to begot. Casting about for a suitable concern on which to operate, the Ame- viean Life & Trust Company was selected as the favored ‘The well known financial telent of Mr. Duer, whocould notonly manufacture any amount of paper promises, but get people to take them, rendered the thing highly feasible. He was one of those brilliant intellects of these latter days who are tremblingly alive to the w’ to that controversy, Inall...... 400 shares. ‘That at the maturity of these contracts on the 20th, 2ist books of transfer were closed, having been shut at the ordinary period for declaring a di- vidend, and not reopened in con: of the Levis frauds. That previous and 24th January, 1840, the edness and folly of cstroy ing credit and ruining property by demanding payment of promises. He was surrounded by afew noble hearts ofthe same stamp. James Boorman, Esq. for instance, who has lately refined so far upon the credit system, as to make the statute the sole test of the justice of aclaim, Before these people, Daniel Webster, Esq. appeared, and he argued so forcibly, and described the futare glories of the Island, its prosperity and profit, and above all, the great national blessing that it would turn out to be, with such irresistible energy and effect, that Duer, Boorman & Co. planked down $260,000 of the stockholders’ money without winking. What has become of that money does not appear, but Grand Island is there yet, the Niagara rapids still roar around it, the bleak winds of winter whistle over its waste and barren surface; but the castles, the property, the business, the profit, and the blessings to grow upon it out of the loan of the Ameri- can Life & Trust Co., have, like the “odor of nationality that hung round the United States Bank,” paseed off with the vision of the projector. Nothing has ever grown upon either Grand Island or Chatauque lands, but “' small pota- toes” and “noxious weeds.” Reronr or THE Committer or THE New Yorx Stock ano ExcHaner Boarp, In REFERENCE TO THE ConTRACTS von Kentucky Bank Stock, PENDING Between J.
