These will we coming in due time. ‘They each contain, like the American Life & Trust, the skeleton of a complete political party, from Secretary of State or Gevernor, down to editors, pipe layers, singers, and balderdash writers—each his proportionate loan. John Duer, Esq., the worthy President, is the son of an eminent financier, one who got up the first “ corner” in Wall street. There was at that time but one bank, the Bank of New York, and he attempted a “comer” in its stock, and failed. “Cornering” was then as much behind the age, as Governor Seward’s Erie Railroad is behind the present age. propos of Governor Seward. His famous «enlightened message,” his “ brilliant views of the fu- ture,” that “unparalleled State paper,” which recom- mends the immediate prosecution of the Erie Railroad, is scarcely before the people before the expose of the com- pany appears, showing that his excellency’s public spirit- ed motives are to connect his lands and lots in Chatauque county, on the shores of the lake at the termination of the Railroad with the city of New York. These landshe has mortgaged to the Trust Company for $210,000, and with truly statesmanlike sagacity, he recommends the imme- diate construction of the Railroad “ at any cost,” in order to raise their value, The Grand Island speculation, in which Messrs, Webster, White & Co. embarked so large- ly, iteppears, is pledged to tho company for $259,000, Daniel Webster, Esq., steppod into the shoes of Major Noah, in his patriarchal capacity, on Grand Island. It does not appear, however, whether the same Richard the ‘Third’s coat, in which the Major paraded before his peo- ple, was worn by Daniel Webster before the board of di- rectors when procuring his loan. ‘The English houses connected with America will yet be astonished ai the complete hollowness of the bubbles of their own raising. Their credits, their loans, and their competition for American business, backed by the Bank of England, set on foot those wild speculations, the fruits of which they now grasp in those valueless assignments. ‘They have failed to get any hold on the property or in- dustry ofthe country, and they reap a just reward. ‘Zhe evils they suffer are less than those which they and their agents have inflicted upon this country. ‘The condition approaching to anarchy which our affairs now present, are the fruits of the paper bubbles raised by them. We yesterday gave a part ef the assets of the Baltimore American Life & Trust Co., at the New York office. Genesee sells at in Baltimore, on the 17th inst. Howard street flour was selling at $6,00 from the stores, and $4,87 from wagons. Wheat was down to 9) to 95 cents, and corn at 53 a 55 © The late rains raised the waters of the Saco river till it overflowed its banks and did much damage to the crops in Maine. The bridge across the river at Fryeburg was cai away last Thursday, and about fifty tons of hay, that had been cut on its intervale, in Fryeburg and Conwa: but chiefly in Conway, were swept off and destroyed. Cornand potatoes, however, and, in fact, all root crops, promise well. It is stated in the Quebee Mercury, of the 16th instant, that during the ten days previous ihe weather had been dry and warm, and in some parts of the country the far- mers began to complain of drought. Haying yas mostly over, and this crop, throughout Lower Canada, was abundant. Some barley was cut in the last week of July. It was a good crop, as well as rye, pegs, and Indian corn, which is now sown in great quantities in the upper dis- tricts, in consequence of the failure of the wheat from the pd or the worm which it deposits in the ear. Oats are changing coler, and are luxuriant. The small patches of three months bearded wheat sown late, have generally escaped the fly. The bald four months wheat is attacked as usual during the last nine or ten years. Potatoes have missed in some places, but the crop will be an average. Altogether, the crops throughout Canada may be said to beabundant. There will be plenty of food for the inhab- itants of North America, and the producers will readily part with a share of it for labor. We regret to state that in Wisconsin the wheat crop is not as good as it promised to be. Upon harvesting, it is found to have been injured by the rust. The late wheat is very Dedly hurt—the very early but little From Mic! ga we learn, that, notwithstanding the low pricethat our farmers have received for wheat the two past years, and the poor prospect for a better market this year, there is, it is believed, at least one-third more wheat raised this season, in this vicinity, than any year previous. Hard times cannot check the industry of the farmers.— Niles (Mich.) Republican. Provision Market, We have the usual fluctuations to notice in the vegeta- ble markets. [t is useless to give quotations, as the prices of the morning are not those of the evening. There is more steadiness in meats, for the reason that they are not quite so perishable as fruit, and that there is a better understanding among the butchersthan there is among the hucksters. We quote beef at 7 to 11 cents a pound, and other ani- mal food is in proportion. Seldom if ever has there been such an abundance of vegetables of ail kinds as at present. Corn, tomatoes, cu- cumbers, tpeaches, apples, beans, pears, &c. are as ple: ty, almost, as the sands on the sea shore, and nearly cheaptoo. With theexception of peaches, corn, and fruit of all sorts can be had for a mere song, but not, perhaps, for a Tippecanoe song;as the hucksters prefer cash down. Com can be purchased for fifty cents a hundred, any where. As stated, peaches are a little higher than other fruit, because they are controlled this year by speculators. We learn that nearly all the peach orchards in New Jer- sey have been purchased for this year’s fruit, and the market supplied as the demand calls for it, at high prices. We wish it copld be so urranged that consumers would agree not to eat peaches for a week or ten days. We ra- ther suspect that such a determination would knock down the price pretty effectually. 7 Died On the 18th inst. afer a short but severe illness, Joun Pre, in the 67th year of his age.
