[Correspondence of the Hemld.] Lexineron, Ky., Aug. 5, 1842. The Elections in Kentucky—The Local Grounds of the Contest—Animal Magnetism—The Methodists— Reli gion—Henry Clay at Church, §¢. Dear Bennett :— In the absence of your Lexington correspondent, whose business has called him frem the city for a sherttime, Ihave undertaken the task of keeping the public intormed, as to the manner of doing up things in our neighborhood. Our election, which has just come off, was not canvassed upon any question of national polities, but the diversity of sentiment upon local questions, such as relief laws, &c., gave great animation to the con- test. Amongst the measures proposed for the relief of the country from its deplorable conditien, was the establishment of a Commonwealth Bank. This was one of the most prominent measures upon which Mr. Wendover, one of our most clear headed finan- ciers, rested his claimsto our votes; and for some days previous to the election, hissuccess was 80 evi- dent as to alarm our money lenders. They saw, in his success, the inevitable and speedy end of their olden harvest, and forthwith took the stump against fim and his bank. Rev. Dr. —, who, it isthought, never before dreamed of charging Jess than 10 per cent per annum for his money, intimated that in fu- ture his demands would be lowered to 5. Similar in- timations were made by Messrs. H——, B——, C——, and others; and so great was the influence of these gentlemen, or rather of their money, that Mr. Wendever was defeated. In religion, as well as in science, our progress is onward. Animal Magnetism is accomplishing won- ders in our city. A young stranger, who recently came amonggt us from parts unknown, and, who 18 piving leetures to our citizens almost every night, has explored this science so far as to be satisfied it was not wholly unknown in the days of the prophets. And Dr. C.. who is by no means an enthusiast, fan- cies that he sees, very distinctly, the traces of its footsteps in the miracles wrought in the days of the Apostles, The Clergymen are giving way to the force of its truth, and some_of them have succeeded in putting alarge portion of their congregations to sleepin thirty minutes. Brother ——, afew days since, had great difficulty in arousing his intime to be regularly dismissed. Our Methodist friends are doing well in their beau- tiful new church. Brothers C—— and » are engaged, with laudable zeal, in SBN ED et upa revival before the meeting of the annual con erence, which comes off in Lexington next month. My no- tice of the Methodist Church would be incomplete, were Ito omit a well merited castigation which they received at the hands of Mr Dearing the other day, on the subject of going in debt beyond their ability to pa’ pay Our Campbellite friends are always wide awake, and Spee Dually. make inroads upon the other churches, by robbing them of of a member—indeed they seem to be fighting alittle too much under the banner of king numbers. ‘heir ranks have been thrown into some little confusion by an aspersion cast by some one, upon the charactnr of one who it seems, is in the habit of walking in his sleep, and in one of] his excursions in the dark, got into th ne wrong box. Itis thoughthe may have been under the influence of Animal Magnetism. It was announced last week that the Rev. Alex. Campbell, was in the neighborhood, and would reach in Lextngton on Sabbath last. At an early our the College Chapel was crammed with ladies Shortly after the service commenced, the stir about the door indicatedt he arrival of some distinguished character. The aisle was at once cleared, and sign made to Mr. Campbell to stop, and presently Mr Clay walked in. Ashe approached the foot of the pulpit a scuffle commerced, in which the principal. members of the church took apart, forthe honor of givinghim a seat. The most pais hopes are entertained by the brethren, that he may yet be- come a member of theirchurch; and the day is anx- iously looked for, when they will have the pleasing ceremony to perform of giving him the hand of fel- lowship. The ‘Object of Mr. Campbell's visit -mongst us was to collect money for the support of a College he is building up. His stay was short, and his ehavior tothe pastors of our other churches was so concil tory that they looked ateach other as they passed in the streets like mischevious school boys who had just been reprieved from a whipping. [Correspondence of the Herald.] Hemrsrrap, Aug. 10, 1842. Pleasures of Hempstead—Ladics’ Fair—Religion, Se. James Gorvon Bennett, Esq.— Dear Sm— Wishing to get rid of the noise and heat of the city, I wended my way to the Long Island Rail- road cars at Brooklyn, which conveyed me to this delightful village, a distance of 21 miles in about two hours, having passed through the young manu- facturing village of Eart New York, Jamaica, Brushville and Clowsville. Immense numbers of our citizens have resorted to various parts of Long Island this season ; and no where in the vicinity of New York can there be found a more pleasant place than this. Being situ- ated within a few miles of the ocean, the air is sa- lubrious, and at all times ten degrees colder than in “Gotham.” Daily parties are made up for fishing and hunting excursions in the bay, which abounds in game of every description. Int lis village, which contains about 1500 inhabitants, there are three churches and five public houses, the best of which is owned and occupied by Robert Anderson, and is decidedly the best hotel on the Island, as his numer- ous guests will testify. At this Hotel’ Sj fail balls are given every Thursday evening, which are at- tended by the elite of the place. Before quietly set- tling down in your magnificent, eatebliatinent in Fulton street, do make us a visit. I shall remain here until about 10th September, and will guarantee you such a reception, and such sport as you will ave cause to remember all the days of your life, which, for ‘pe own happiness and the best interest of society, | pray God may be extended until “ life shall paces to charm.” This day a Fair is being held at Anderson’s by the members of St. George’s opr or Church, the proceeds to be applied to the relief of the poor of the congregation, ‘The most active in ssn up this charitable affair is Mrs, G—n, the lady of an emi- nent lawyer in our city, whe is now absent in isses O-—k, and Kurope—! the fascinating Mrs. L—g and her amiable ‘sister from New Yor! Miss ‘T-——n, daughter of the historian of [sland. A spirit of Mew has fora long time pee ed between the Presb: | pee and Episcopal churches of this place, which has called forth all the elo- quence and power of the contending parties. There has been quite a flare up between one of the minis- tersof this place and his ty oe There being one of the most lovely women of this place concern- ed in the affair, | must retain the particulars for your private ear, or wait for further Coot yn oe which will probably occur, and which will be yerche. ‘There is much that I would hike to write, but not knowing how this will be received, [ will await the — of this. So adieu. Lonenzo. My kind regards to Mrs. B. and /a jeune Editeur. Portland. [Correspondence of the Herald.) Porthanp, August 6, 1842. Portland—Its pleasures— The Collector of the port— A party at his house—Light House Survey, Dear Bennert— As your valuable paper coniains the latest and best information of every thing and every place, send you an account of the doings and sayings in the delighful city of Portland. And a truly delight- ful place it is—broad streets lined with trees splen- did mansions and women—oh, the most beautiful women in creation. You cannot conceive the de- light with which I lounge along the shady streets on a sunshiny day, eyeing askance the grou € of beauti- ful girls that float along them. But aside from con- struction and the ladies, Portland has very exten- sive claims to our attention in the magnitude of its commerce and in its beautiful bay. It is the princi- gi seaport of the United States, north of Boston.— ere vessels of all sizes and descriptions are built and sailed to every port of earth. The society is wealthy and fashionable in the ex- treme. Last evening a 5) : plendid party was given by the collector of the Mr. Cummings,) and assembled in his magni: pant rooms were all the beauty and the fashion of the city. Oh! it was aperfect jam; no possibility of moving out of the eneral current that set from room to room in one lense stream. The beautiful dresses—the beautiful women—the inspiring music—the well dressed gen- tlemen, all combined te form a scene that dazzled and delighted. Upon entering the room | recognized the gentlemanly host, and shortly after, by dint of great perseverance, made my way up to the lady of the mansion, and was received by Mrs. ©. with all the matronly kindness and dignity of manner, that renders her the idol of hereirele. On looking about, my eye at once discovered the belle of the srening. Miss D***e, of Staten Islaad, who splendidly attired surrounded ‘by a group of admirers, was dispensing her smiles in’ a manner that made many a heart che. Seated near, her friend, the charming widow D*****g, all light, and life and loveliness— the worshipped centre of another shere. These la- dies were decidedly the belles, in vivacity, in beau- ty, in the taseful elegance of their dresses, they held the undisputed palm. Atthis moment the music struck up, the parties moved off, the quadrilles form- ed, and all was floating in light and grace. Ata turn of the dance, 1 discovered the two Misses C™*p sisters, and both magnificent beauties in the fle nid style, large, languishing and superb; they moved through the figures with the voluptuous grace of ori- ental beauty. Among other Sistine d beauties, Inoticed Mrs. L*****, Miss D*w, Miss Miss W., ma a host of bright and joyous faces ree yee to Among the gentleme: n were the officers of the U nited States brig Consort, of the Revenue Cutter Morris, and of the First Regiment Artillery, to gether with the gentlemen composing the commis- sion for the Light House Survey, in whose honor I understand the fete was chiefly given. Now that the subject is started, one word in reia- tion te the Light House survey; itis one of those uiet, unostentatious measures of President Tyler, that ‘ conceived in wisdom and executed with abi- lity, confers, without noise, great good upen the country, and mronaly contrast with the paltry dis- play for’ political effect, that has so long disgraced the opposing parties for power. The fact is noto- rious that our Light House system for some time past has been a mere farce in its management; no attention has been paid to the rapidiy increasing wants of ourfgreat marine, and the stations have been chiefly selected where most convenient to fur- nish some political partizan with a contract, and some stuinp orator with a desirable birth. It is really astonishing that such wretched con- structions and execrable lighting apparatus should disgrace the coast of a great commercial! nation; there 1s some consolation, however, inknowing that the evil is in a fair way for reform. Mr. J. W. P. Lewis, an engineer of great experience and capa- city, and who ha long given the subject undivided attention, has been appointed to survey and tho- roughly investigate the notorious deficiencies. It isto be hoped that speedy action willbe had on a subject of such vital importance to our commercial interest. The cutter Rush is appropriated tor the ares , which is finished from Eastport to this place, and shows ina strong light the utter inefficiency of the reat system. In my next, I shall give you some descriptions of our eastern coast. WANDERER.
