For the healthfulness of climate, the medicinal qualities of the mineral waters, the beauty of location and sur- rounding scenery. | These springs, being situated on one of those delightful and enchanting bays on Lake Champlain, are not surpassed by any public place of resort in the Union. The Franklin House, kept by Messrs. Durtey & Cutting, is elegant, large and commodions, and no pains on'their part 4s syar- ed which can in the least contribute to the comfort or happiness of their guest; and in short, every thing connected with the place contributes to render it @ desirable place ot resort for ail in quest of health or Penman: We have a great number of fashionables here at present. Respectfully, yours, &c. W.W.w. ‘West Point. [Correspondence of the Herald.) New York, Aug. 5, 1842, West Pornt—And the abuses of the Porters there. To Tue Epitor or ru Herat :— Having frequently noticed in your amusing paper, notices of places of public resort, and believing thatyou are willing to doany thing that lies in your power to publish, and thereby rectify abuses, I would call your attention, and that of Capt. Ryder, who keeps the Hotel in such excellent vle at West Point, to the impudence and cheatery of the men who appear to have the monopoly of conveying pas- sengers and baggage from the landing place. f ap- pears they are independent of the hotel, and do not enter it to bring out the baggage. Thus articles are frequently lett behind, when, taking advantage of the almost momentary stoppage ef the boat, they refuse to return for the missing article, and if any demur be made to the extravagant charge of half a dollar for bringing down the baggage so short a dis- tance, they cooly and impudently tell you if you dot not pay they will keep it lack % that there is no choice between submission and losing your passage. If they are not checked, no doubt, ina short time, they will double their exactions. Captain Ryder may easily rectify this abuse by em- ploying the porters of the hotel, and then I would advise all who have lelaare to pass a few days at this really beautiful spot. our obedient serv’t, “Justicr.* Long Branch, [Correspondence of the Herald.] Lone Brancn, Bath Buildings, Aug. 4, 1842. Life at Long Branch. Mr. Benyett— : Dear Sir— T addressed you a few lines from this place some weeks since;! my first visit proved so exceedingly pleasant, that, throwing my cares and troubles to the dogs, Lhave returned, again to breath an at- mosphere not compounded exclusively of dead cata, rats, and ‘* such small deer.” ‘The blue-devils, are riding me down to-day like 'a “main tack,” and the cause is, I suppose, although there is a vast deal of apparently pleasant company around me, yet I cannot but remember the friend® with whom I made my first visit, and the happy hours I then passed. Every thing the eye rests up- on, even the trees and stones, remind me of the ab- sent, and although associated with the memory of past pleasure, the sense of the present loss far out- weighs itall. Perhaps the wisest course is, to bury the dead from out your sight; neither remember nor grieve for the past; and yet, I am inclined to think, sad thoughts make better men ; for we have the word of the wisest of men, that “sorrow is bet- ter than laughter, for by the sadness of the coun- tenance the heart is made better.”” I began with the serious intent of writi oua very amusing letter, but in looking it over, id it bears a stronger resemblance to a penitential psalm. Banish from my brain ye “black spirits and white, blue spirits and grey,” and be the seas upon you—ye disgust my soul within me. 6 Long Branch, at this my present writing, is indeed but one remove from the gates of Heaven; while you,in the great city, are half fused with heat, stifled with air, redolent of butcher’s stalls and patrid ve- getables. I am sitting, with a breeze blowing through my window, requiring my most constant care to keep my writing materials upon my table, and almost the hair upon my head, Caseaay a wig you eae ‘and the air! now breathe is no com- mon one, for it comes from the sweet south, bear- ing upon its wings, tribute from every new mown field, and even blossom and flower, which it kissed, as they bloomed in its path. Enjoyment is notcon- fined fo the Hayalone, for when the night comes on my friends, (I have one trusty, tried and true,) ant he stands *‘ high in mouths of wisest censure,” and tuyself, equip ourselves with some real Havana’s, and betake us to the sea beach, and there we smoke, and hold high converse of other days, when we were boys together, and when our chief delight, was in chasing those will-o-the-w caled wo- men; but though sunken into the vale ot years, we encourage each other with the reflection, that if for us the war is over, we yet, to the boys of the present day, could— * Shoulder our crutch, And show how fields were won.” Towards the small hours, we turn in, not to be “sweltering in our own heat,” but to pleasant dreams, the consolation of a day well spent, and the certainty of a glorious appetite for our breakfast, on the morrow: and such breakfa as my friend Captain Green, gives us, “eye hath not seen nor ear heard.” Ilis table, like the land of Goshen, “flows with mk and honey.” Do not take my word for it, but come and see with your own eyes, and not’ anothers. With the exception of my friend, I have not an acquaintance here. The people appear pleasant enough. Among the ladies, none transcendantly beautiful, but many faces “comely to be looked upon,” id to gain whose smiles, would well repay a reasonable degree of trouble. ith me, the glory has departed, and I can almost say with Hamlet, ———"Man delights me not— Nor woman either.” As we grow old, and our powers of pleasing fail— when we remember the time was, that the young, the beautiful and gay, hung upon our lips, to them listentng now, calm as a summer’s morning, when we are rally “spreading ourselves,” (to borrow the favorite figure of my friend) is it won- derful that we should grow cynical, and in our de- spair sneer at the luscious grapes, which to us henceforth and forever, will be sour. My friend who isreading my epistle near my elbow, just ex- claimed ‘Oh! T wish youhad’nt said that.” About that time, the iron entered his soul. I forgot nearly to tell you, that on Sunday last, we had « visit from the great American Sea Serpent. saw him with my own eyes—homps and all—he loomed up against the horizon, like Beachy Head in a fog. Oh,* if that fellow could be taken—the rover of a thousand seas—whata tale, of the won- ders of the deep he could spread before us. Yours, ReENovaTED. i * rom the Aathors Manuscripts, Ke. .
