MONEY MARKET. Sunday, July 24—6 P.M. We yesterday alluded to the most extraordinary an ncuncement of Boorman,Johnston & Co., that they had in terposed a legal quibbleasa bar to the claim of Jacob Litt! & Co. for 200 shares of Kentucky Bank Stock. That clain they acknowledge to have been contracted in good faith and that Jacob Little & Co. were ready and willingto fu! fill their part, but from causes veyoud the centrol o either party, were prevente’ from making the legal del very apon the booksof the Bank. This matter, althoug! a private transaction, is one which has been laid befor the public by one of the parties interested, and it involve’ a principle that affects the whole community. It is whe: ther a merchant or other man of business may repudiate contracts entered into in good faith, on the plea th the law cannot compel him to make it good, and maintain his reputation and standing. This is a step be- yond Mississippi repudiation. That State avowed thet she repudiated the claims upon her Lecause they were fraudulent from the commencement. The plea in the case before us is that there is an inability on the part of the claimant to recover his claim at law. The answer of Messrs. Little & Co.seems to have been prompted by the very ge- nius of American republicanism. They said that “ they would rather forfeit the amount than have a difficulty, bu! ‘as a member of the community it was their duty not to sub- mit to manifest wrong, therefore they wouldfabide by the verdict of pubtic opinion. If that awarded their claim, Boorman &Johnston would be obliged to pay it. In the ion of Boorman & Johnston they that they igh minded” principal ; and further state that a correspondent at Louisville furnishes them with informa- tion “that stock was accumulating in the name of Jacob Little & Co.” If Boorman, Johnston, & Co. has supposed the contract to have been destroyed by the closing of the books, how came their correspondent, who it appears mus’ have had daily and constant access to the stock book in order to ascertain that stock was accumulating, to be 80 in- terested in the account of Jacob Little & Co? Why should he take pains to write to New York how much Kentucky Bank stock Little & Co. held? Is not the “high minded” priacipalof Boorman & Johnston one of the Directors of the Kentucky Bank who voted for repu- dinting the spurious stock ? If so, it may account for the interest taken in the movements of Mr. Little, whose claim is now repudiated. The report of a committee ap- pointed by the Board of Brokers to investigate the matter will probably be made to-day. Messrs. Boorman & John- ston, it appears, refused to acknowledge the existence or influence of the Board of Brokers in the matter, on the ground that it isa “self constituted and secret associa- tion.” But they appealed to the Chamber of Commerce, which is not only also ‘a self constituted and secret asso. ciation,” but one of its presiding officers, James G. King, isa Stock Brokei We have received many valuable tables from the Com- meree an} Navigation Report of the Treasury Department at Washington, which we give, as compared with former years, as follows :— Invorts axp Exvonts or ine Usityp Srare: 1841, AS COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS YEARS, 1838. 1339, 1810. 184). The import of foreign goods increased in the year 1841,'$20,000,000, which was brought entirely by American vessels; on the contrary, the ex- ports of domestic goods decreased in the aggregate al- though the quantity purchased by foreign vessels increar- ed, and was greater than ever before, being $23,813,331. ‘The entries of American tonnage largely increased while the clearances diminished, showing the falling off of busi- ness at the close of the year. The following is a compo- rative table of the imports of each State for three years, with the exporis for 1941 :— Imports oF cach State AND TERRITORY FOR THREE YFARS, wit THe Exroats ror 1941. 611,839 874,244 1,153,591 Imports. In fact it is the only point at which the imports of 1841 were higher than ever before, and 20 per cent higher than the average of the preceding four years, including that year of immense imports, 1839! ‘The imports into New York have fluctuated 67 per cent, or from $99,000,000 to $60,000,000. In the same time the imports of Massachusetts varied but $3,000,000. The cause is evident ; the imports into New York depend for a vent upon the bank credits of the interior. By bank facilities people buy and sell on credit without limit; remove those bank loans and there is no means of buying, and the trade falls 40 per cent asin 1840. In New England, on the con- trary, the trade depends very slightly upon the banks, because the bonks are made to follow productive industry very closely, hence no more is imported at any time than can be well paid for. These means of payment are con- stantly on the increase. Hence it is that the New England States are doing « larger business than ever be- fore, regardless of all political or financial mountebanks in other sections ofthe country. The chief articles of domestic produce exported from the United States in 1841, were as follows :— Cuter ARTICLES oF Domestic Propucr EXPORTED FROM tHe Usirep Start 1833. 1839, Coxton, value, 61,556,811 61,238,982 i crop, 801,097 1 572,672 Tobaceo, . 3 12,576,703 Flour, 6,925,170 759,646, Manufactures, #,975,033 312,546 1,771,230 2,521,537 2,460,198 2010,107 os ,908,358 2,746,606 There was a great falling off in the quantity of the cot- ton crops in 1841 and consequently in the value, which was really much less than given, because it did not real- ize abroad its home valuation, a fact which the ruined coniition of the Southern banks isa proof of. The tobacco planters who have clamored so much for retaliative duties, because they think the internal imposts of other countries injures their business, have exported 25 per cent more than ever before. The large exports of flour in 1840, con- *°uent upon its then low price, produc ed the natural re- suit of diminishing the surplus in the United States, and thereby raising the average value of the whole so as to check the exports in the succeeding year. ‘The exports of pork and rice also largely increased, as did the export of domestic coins. The general state of the business of the Union gives indications that it is on a sound basis, and its course in futuse must be onward. erat atone lnc OO Fail!
