(UP ASTONISHING RECOVERY,—I have been saved irom the dark precipice of an untimely death, anc from the miseries and tertures of a most vexatious and pro- tracted sickness, and by the blessing of God 1 am enabled to offer my public thauks to Dr. Joseph Heine, German physician to the (German Dispensary, No. 188 Hudsow street. Until by the blessing of a superintendin, Provi- dence A feeble limbs led me to that excellent ani table institutions,to receive the assistance of the kind ben. efactor who inistered to my aiflictions. I obtained until then neither help nor assistance in my most miser- able sufterings—to him, the-efore, am 1 most justly bouuc in th rai 5 1 gratitude, to return a most lasting and pub- lic acknowledgment. - | applied in vain for relief to some of the most eminent ofthe medical faculty in New York, some of whom advi- sed country air, others amputation of the limbs. In conse- uence of the malignant depredations of their 1D, have had upwards of one hundred and seven ant ulcers on the legs, and seven or eighton the arms; these. by the timely assistance of the above [hysician, are no! only healed, but every vestige of this formidable diseas: rooted out of my system. 1 have since periormed a voyage to Savannah and back, and have for the last three years enjoyed the most unio- terry and perfect health. I publish this for the benefit ot eateeing humanity, and advise all, by the blessing of God, to seek retiof from my lasting benefactor. EEXANDER MACKEY, 623 Water street. ASTONISHING CURE.—I have been saved from death and a miserable pain in the limbs, caused by the swelling of the bones to such an extent that they were ready to Murst, andulcers under my arms, which have troubled me in this way for seven years; and lucky for me, I saw an advertisement in the paper of a cure perform- ed by Joseph Heine, a German Physician, of the German Dispensary, No. 188 Hudson street, when Providence sent iter beiag under several of the most eminent Physi- n New York and country, for seven long years, and a}! to no effect. I applied to the Doctor, and by his skill and the goodness of God, I have been restored to health again. “I can now thank God for sending such an experienced doctor to this country, FREDERICK STRUCK, 201 Varick street, Sworn before me this 1th day of April, 1839. M. PRICE MASON, Com. of Deeds, N.B. Dr. Heine has removed to 164 Canal street, where the medicine may be obtained at $10 a box, which is gen- erally sufficient to effect a cure. Letters must be post paid. Medicines forwarded by sending the above sum to any part of the Union. @) &, THE ORCHESTRION NOW PLAYING AT the New York Museum is the most wonderful ‘imen of mechanical skill ever offered in this count: tiful tone of this instrument with the imit ferent instruments combined as an orchest imposing effect. So perfect is the illusion 1 ly to be conceived that such a thing is possible. Tt must be seen before it can be appreciated. ‘The experiments in Animal Magnetism by Mr. Johnson, excites the admira- tion and astonishment of all who have witnessed them. Performance at 11 A.M. and at half past eight in the even- ing. MAKE WAY.—Henry Brown, the shade of the celebrated Calvin Edson, has appeared at the National Museum, corner Bowery’ and Divisian street, where he may be seen for a short time only. This young man has just arrived from the West India Islands, he is 20 years of ‘age, weighs 43 Ibs. and is 6 feet 10 inches in height, his thigh ia only 3 inches round, his body and limbs are in the same proportion, and a much greater curiosity than Calvin Edson. The medical faculty should call and see this rare speciman of mankind. &@- MR. BARNUM IS REAPING GOLDEN LAU- RELS at the American Museum No place of amusement in the city presents so good a variety of attractions as this, and none is better supported. Winchell, the comic drolle- rist, is within himself a host, and Whitlock and Diamond have no equals in their line. Miss Rosalie, the sweet singer, and Celeste, the charming dancer, elicit ge ay lause, and the mysterious Gipsey Girl is taking the whole wn by storm, ‘The model of Dublin is a great curiosity; a look at itis worth double the price of admission. Then we have halfa million of curiosities to examine, and take a delightful promenado in the garden on the top of the Museum, witness the Balloon Ascension, &c. Day visi- tors are admitted free in the evening. Heavens! what a treat for 26 cents! Barnum is the Napoleon of Managers. GG CHATHAM THEATRE —The new managers of this establishment are determined to be as assiduous in their efforts to please ‘as was their predecessor, and we pre- dict for them the same degree of popularity. ‘Mr. Stevens has been long and favorably known as the Stage Manager of this theatre, and Mr. Palmer as the urbane and tle- manly Treasurer. MONEY MARKET. ‘Wednesday, July 12—6 P.M. ‘There was more doing at the Stock Board this morning, although prices generally gave way with the exception of Harlem, which improved one per cent, and sales after the board were reported at a further advance of tree per cent. “The large operator” has been so methodical in his re- puted madness, that he seems to have it all h's own way: The vpinion has been expressed by shrewd brokers that if all the stocg outstanding at buyer's option were to be called in, the stock would touch nearly par, notwithstand- ing that it is now apparently plenty. Farmers’ Loar rose one per cent; Del. and Hudson fell 2 per cent; [linois 6's, }; Mohawk }; New York State 7’s }; sales of the latter were reported after the board at } premium. For New York city 7 per cents four premium was offered and eight asked. It is rumored to-day that a deficiency of $11,000 has been discovered in the accounts of a book-keeyer of the Green- wich Bank, who occasionally acted as teller. It is under- stood that Mr, Cornell of the Mechanics’ Banking Associ ation is the secnrity in this case. The following is a statement of the Virginia Bank to the Ist instent : State or tue Bank or Vincinia ann Brancr ED. 1842. July, 1911. Ine. Orleans we learn thatthe Mayor had the good sense to voto the ridiculous imposition of $4,000 tax upon the brokers. The Maryland authorities have yet time to ¢ their character from the disgrace of a similar enact- ment. The three specie paying banks of New Orleans— the Bank of Louisiana, the Mechanics’ & Traders’, and the Union still hold out, notwithstanding that they ex- perienced terrific opposition from the insolvent banks, which are desirous of concealing their own bankruptey under a continued general suspension. These institutions have, however, nothing to fear, If they have conducted prudently and have their means at command, nothing can compell them to break. ‘The banks of this city in the fall of 1899, it will be remembered, had to withstand the as- saults of enemies from without and of traitors within. The United States Bank, according to the subsequent confes- sions of its officers, lent its whole influence to bring about their suspension. At the same moment the pipe-layers and dry goods jobbers called a meeting at the City Hotel to force the banks to suspend. Ata later period the Philadel- phia bank Delegation, headed by James G. King, endeavor- ed to wheedle the banks of this city into linking them- selves with Phildadelphia insolvency, but all in vain.— Governed by the immutable laws of trade, the Merchants’ Bank followed by the othe: ot firmly every{assault; the assassins of our commercial credit finally gave up their fruitless attacks, and correct commercial principle tri- umphed. So will it bein all sections of the country where the tre interests of the people repose in skilful, and above all, in firm hands. ‘The State of Pennsylvania may now be classed among the insolvent States, and her disgrace and difficulties may he tracea to the vacillating course of Governor Porter in the winter of 1940, when in opposition to all dictates of common sense, he bargained with insolvent banks for the means of paying the interest due in February of that year It will be remembered that the State actually failed. Ar that time a bill was pending in the State Legislature com- pelling a resumption of specie payments by the banks or the loth of February, 1840. Governor Porter, in his annual message of that year, stated that the State must fail unless the money was raised by taxation or new loans—he recom- mended the latter; but at the same time acknowledged that the banks were insolvent, In agcordance with hiv re- comniendation, a loan for $870,000 was created, and cou ! not be sold, because the will of the people was clearly Jor resumption; and the banks, if obliged to pay their own s would have nothing to lend. On the 28th of Janua- y the insolvent banks sent a committee to Harrisburgh. da the Bist the resumption bill passed the House, by 0 \rge majority; onthe Ist of February the State failed,an? he same Yay the Governor sent a message to the Legis containing the fullowing passage:—"I believe if too igorous a 6y ‘opted to coerce the vayment of t es of the banks immediately, the ‘redit of the State must and will be seriously and disaster- sly aftected-” Or in other words, the bank committee ay they will lend their irredsemable paper as @ means of paying the State debt, if they can have their own time to cesume—but if you oblige them to resume, the State must take care of itself. On the 3d of February, 1940, the com- mittee returned to Philadelphia, and on the 4th it was an- nounced that the insolvent banks had taken the loan. It wasthen fully understood that if the Vill passed, the Go- vernor would veto it. It was in consequence finally lost. It was at that moment ‘hat the fate of Pennsylvania was sealed, and she became linked with fthe insolvent banks. A most amusing farce was played off at that time by the banks, particularly the Bank of Pennsylvania, which has since utterly failed.— That concarn gravely held a meeting and threatened the Legislature that if the resumption bill passed the institut tion would wind up its affairs and “pay off its stock- holders.” How many of these stockholders would now be glad to see that threat put in execution? So strongly were we then convinced of the ruinous consequenges of the course pursued, that wefexpressed ourselves as fellows in our article of Feb. 1840 :— The position of affairs in Pennsylvania, at the present moment, is most extraordinary. The commercie! interest of the whole country. and o dustrious classes of that State, are to be sacrificed to the pory interests of some six or seven speculators. The visit of the bank commit tee to Harrisburgh wrought a wonderful change in the views of the Legislature and Executive officer on the sub- ject of resumption. The debt of Pennsylvania is now $34,000,000; of this sum one-third or $11,600,000 has been borrowed to pay the expenses of interest and commissions on the other $23,000,000. in August last the State borrow- ed $200,000 to make up enough to pay the semi-annual in. terest then due. She was unable to borrow the amount necessary to pay the February interest until she had fail At the moment of disgrace, and inthe agony of e, the committee of the insolvent banks step forward and offer their irredeemable notes on condition that the law should not touch them for their misdeeds. The truckling Governor, to “ dodge the question” of immediate taxation, plunges the people deeper in debt, and entails upon them anirredeemablecurrency. * '* * * © * Will taxation come upon the people easter, when the amount to be paid is $5,000,000 per annum, than when it is $2,000,000? ‘The defenders of the borrowing system say, that the canal revenue may increase so as to pay the whole interest.— ‘The contintied suspension of the banks is the very means to prevent this. ‘The farmers of Ohio, who enjoy a specie currency on a par with New York, will choose rather to send the produce where they ean et specie funds for it, than where they are paid in irredeemabie paper. The amount derived from canal tolls will, from this cause, de- crease rather than increase. The Governor states that by borrowing now, taxation will be avoided. ‘The taxable property in Pennsylvania is estimated at $300,000,000. A tax of two-thirds of 1 per cent would yield $2,000,000, a sum sufficient to pay the whole te on the loan, and leave the tollsahd receipts of the cm oO ineasnres ‘als to forma sinking fund for the payment of the prin- cipal. To this it must come sooner or later, and in an active state of business would not be complained of ; but the Go- vernor has chosen, rather than manfully (o meet the ques. tion of taxation,to inflict a heavier tax in the shape of a de- preciated curvency—the same tax that has dissipated the capital of Mississippi, eaten out her substance, and left her bankrupt. ‘The debt of the State was then $34,000,000, it is now near $40,000,000 ! are the people any more able to be taxed now than then, The Governor avoided taxation then, and chose rather to borrow and tolerate suspension. Let the United States, the Girard, the Bank of Pennsylvania, and others, with whom the infamous compact was made? Bu- ried in their own corruption, and the State credit is now following them to acommon grave. Such is the inevita- ble fate of all paper juggling, and is one of the legacies of the late National Bank. The abominable extravagancies engendered by the late Bank have resulted in similar dis- aster in all parts of the country, to that which has everta- ken Pennsylvania ; andthe people are now just experien- cing the evils engendered by the paper system. ‘The real wealth of the country is, however, now rapidly increasing and on a basis which cannot be eftected by the tricks of any financier, either of domestic or foreign growth.
