tive this spring in consequence of the prospective inereat of duties, on certain articles, as flour, pork, beef, ke. the have heretofore been freo, and which are, under the new to riff,to be charged with a duty of 2s. per br1, and active iw ports into Canada from the States have been made to avoi that duty, ‘The new regulation will put the Boston me’ + chants ou the same footing es those of Canada in relation to the provincial trade, and will no doubt increase th: trade of Roston. ‘While these operations ore going on,deciding the futur: prosperity of New York, her merchants are resting su pinely on their backs, erying for e bank orsome pape: humbug, to make them rich by legerdemain. ‘The rea, wealth of ‘he countey is pouring into the lap of Boston. The merchants of that city, instead of President making, stockjobbing, and making the agentof a titled broker » presiding otficer in their Chamber of Commerce, they quietly build a railroad connecting the noble line of Cu. nard steamers with the western waters, and cause the Bay State to be the point of transit for the interchange of wealtl, between the old world and the mighty west. There State street resounds with the cheerful hum of busy and money making mep. Money is abundant, sales active, the popu" lation increasing, and rents rising. In Wall street, men goon Change, looking askance at eachother. With their hands in their pockets, they wonder if “the loan has been taken,” “if the English stockjobbers will lend us any more money;” “if Lord Ashburton continues to be good natured?” “ Who has failed to-day?” “Oh! two or three grocers have gene down, one ofthem a very heavy house.” “Ab! no defalcations to-day?” ‘Not yet.” “ What was the cause of the failures?” “Difficulty of procuring re- mittances from the west.” “ Why, what becomes of the produce?” “‘Itall goes to Boston now. Them Yankees are running away with all the trade.” Thus it is, the capitalists of New York are so under the control of a con- temptible set of brokers and foreign agents, that they dare not move unless by their direction. If a railroad is to be Duilt, it must be on condition that the State lendsits credit, and the stock so issued is to be shaved by the redoubtable brokers, and the proceeds squandered away to their politi- eal agents. When the money is all spent they refuse to pay the interest on the stock issued by the State, and the people are saddled with the debt, while the merchants of New York are left without a communication with the in- terlor trade, The cramped dealers, whose liabilities arc falling due, and who cannot get their funds in from the country, are the first to feel the effects of the diversion of thetrade. It is the first symptom that trade is leaving its accustomed channels when those engaged in it at a certain point come short of arrearages due them. The purchases in the grocery line in New York have this spring been exceedingly small, while in Boston they have been larger than last year. When will our merchants awaken from the trance in which they are plunged, and ceasing to call on Hercules for help put theirownshould- ers to the wheel ? The same dullness or stagnation prevails in the retail markets this week as heretofore, and the sellers are anx- ious to realize, as the cominercial men say. ‘The searciiy of money has tended to reduce the price of eatables tr ae real value, as a person can now do his marketing for d dinner, including luxuries, for five or six shillings, en formerly ten or twelve shillings were requisite.
