This draft of the City |Bank of New York on our bank was presented at our bank on the 3ist of Anguet, at ten or eleven in the morn- ling. The teller told the person that presented it he should not pay it unless he could show that he was the real John P. Caldwell in whose favor it jwas drawn. Mr. Caldwell then came to me an! ‘complained that the teller would not pay it without identification. I told him it could not be paid unless he identified himself, and he asa man of business must see the propriety of it. He said thie would put him to a good deal of inconvenictice, as he was an entire stranger in Baltimore, and had no one who could identify him as John P. Caldw He was anxious to leave town thatevening, and that if ‘isted on it, he should have to go to Wash- ington and get a member of Congress from Lonisi identify him. Ashe was going out, he said he had trans- actions in New York with Brown, Brothers & Co., and he believed they had a branch in Baltimore—I told him they had. I said if he could{get Mr. Brown to any it was all right. He left avd returned with Mr. Brown himself. Mr. Brown said he was a stranger with John P. Caldwell, but he (C.) hed shown himan account curreut with Brown, Brothers & Co., and letters from the house which were fenuine, and in this account current this identical check for $10,000 was charged. Mr. Brown said he thought i should be justified in paying it; 1 paid 7 dorsed it P. Caldwell’ in’my presence. I had three intervie J.P. Caldwell’ that morning. This is the droft; it was presented at Balti- more on the 3ist August, about 10 or 11 o’clock in the morning by a person calling himself John P. Caldwell; he came into the office, took out his pocket book and the dreft from that, endorsed it and presented it, and I pnid it. It is payable to him, and not to order, I gave him this check (produced) in payment. I saw him twice that day. The first time I eaw him he wanted $6000 in gold, ond wented me to furnish him; I had not so much by me, and he left the droft for me to see if I could get it. I could not, and offered him Virginia money, which he said would notsuit him #s he wanted to purchase negroes with it.
