It being so contiguous to the city of New York, you have thought, | presume, unimportant to have it re- presented in the * Herald” with the numerous other places so fully deseanted on. But were you to be acquainted with the condition of the people, and of the various societies and clubs recently formed—of the grand balls, parties, &c., daily given by the aristocracy here, | doubt not but it would be es- teemed the first for notice in the columns of your paper. OF all places seen ‘under the sun,” this little island stands unrivalled in point of geographical situation and scenery—walks, gardens, palaces, and cottages. It is here where the lover of nature may stroll over the high and majestic hills, and as he us- cends their summ: he is struck with admiration at the splendid landscape presented to his view, far more sublime and picturesque than can be witnessed in any other place on this, or the continent of Lu- Tope. the increase of buildings and population of this part of the island within the past three or four years, is truly astonishing. Several fine dwellings hav been recently put up, and many are at this time under completion, principally owned by New Yorkers, who have purchased nearly al that property between the Sailor’s Retreat and Narrows. So numer- ous are the removals of families to this place, that all the houses have been engaged, and many have been ppointed in obtaining residences to suit, have been compelled to go to Brighton, and other parts of the nd to obtain them. | cannot omit men tioning the new Hotel recently pt here by one ¢ our old and worthy citizen: . Thomas Hazzard. It is a most elegant house ni a omament to our Mr. H. has spared no expense to make it, ery particular, a favorite and fashionable r treat. The rooms are fitted up in a neat and cony nient manner for families and single gentlemen. ‘The house is situated in a valley near the sea-shore, and within a few yards of the steamboat Wave's landing, commanding a fine view of the Bay and Harbor ew York, and surrounding country, must be considered one tions for persons of business or pleasure in the neigh- borhood of the city of New York. It will be under the sole management of Mr. H., whose knowledge and experience in keeping such an establishmen well known to his numerous friends ; and being great epicure, it need not be questioned but his table will surpass any other observed at similar, places. As the house will be opened about the middle of uext month, I would recommend it to the notiee of ‘our fi ends to make haste and secure apartments before it is too late. It gives me much pleasure to state, that the recent revivals in religion, and the temperance meetings have effected changes almost incredible. Hundreds of both sexes have joined the church, and Have pledged themselves to abstain the use of intoxicating iquors, many of which never was thought could be reclaimed, or persuaded into the belief of the dan- gerous effects of dissipation and drunkenness, which this place has been so celebrated for several years past. The most important movement observed here, and which excites much attention among the go like folks, is a Club ently started into existence a S It is e composed of about 12 young men, voluntarily joined together for the express purpose of lendinj their aid for the extinction of nee ry, poverty, an crime .U It is called the “ R. Fearing I have extended this communication too long I will now conclude, with the promise of send- ing you another one more interesting, if you desire , and remain, G. B. Darine Arremer at Bouretary in Crncrsnati.— Great exeitement prevailed about the Mayor's Office this morning, in consequence of a daring attempt to rob the store of Mr. Hodgson, Druggist, at the corner of Western Row and Sixth street, which was made last night, by four desperate thieves, but prevented, and two of the theives taken alone by the presence of mind, and courage of a young man, Theodore Marsh, who lodged in the store. About midnight, Mr. Marsh, who is not more than 18 years of age, was aroused bv a noise pro- ceeding from the outside of the store, which satis- fied hun that thieves were attempting to force the door. ‘The conrageous youth armed himself with a pis- tolficharged with b shot, and passed out of a side door into the street, where he immediately encoun- tered four desperate ruffians, upon whom he fired. Two of them fled, one crying ont “ I*m shot, I'm shot.” Mr. M. seized upon the remaining two, bat- tering on them over the head with the pistol, tillhe fell exhausted at his feet; he then seized hold of the other, and held him until the watch and others came to his assistance. Both were then taken to the Watchhouse. We have learned, with regret, that the wounds re- ceived ea hy Mr. Marsh, are more severe than was sup- posed.
