Let us draw a ‘The Federal government has a revenue from the public lands, and the city @ corresponding revenue under the name of“ quit rents,” being the revenue derived from the ground rent of that part of the city filled in, viz: from the old water line to the present water line ; for in- stance, Pearl-street was formerly the water-line ; that has been filled in gradually until Water, Front, and South- streets, with their superincumbent} property, stand over the former water privilege of the city ; for this that pro- perty pays ground rent, and yields a revenue which be- inking fund. From the nature of the property however, it is difficult and expensive to collect. The Comptroller therefore applied for and obtained permission t sell out the right to this rent at auction. $350,000, and will be put upon the market as soon as cir- cumstances will permit. The property in the hands of individuals is of the most valuable description, more so than to the corporation, because ofthe superior facilit y of collection. This $350,000 coming into the Treasury will, ell the sinking fund th near $1,000,000, which, under the present judicious man- agement,will be invested in the permanent water stock, to be substituted for the temporary loans.
