Midshipman Moore lost all his clothes which he had with him in the launch. Dr. Lanpyer at Nists Among the enter- tainments announced at Niblo’s for this evening, we observe the application of the magic lantern to the illustration of various objects in science and art, independently of the lucid exposition of that in- teresting optical instrament which may be expected from Dr. Lardner, we understand that he has re- cently obtained from Europe a large collection of the most exquisitely executed paintings on glass, suited to this species of exhibition. A selection from these will be, for the first time in this country, shown this evening in addition to some diorama illustrating meteorological phenomena. Supertluous hairs and false airs of a female are our utter detestation— the former especially. We never could think of falling in love with a woman whose fuzzy face bears aresemblance to the back of a half picked goose, and wonder how any body elseever could. Now, we are perfectly well satisfied from what we know and have seen, that Dr. Gouraud’s Depilatory Powders will remove every superfiuous hair in a few misiutes, without the least injury to the skin, unlike many vile compositions which have been put forth to ef- fectthis object. Sales of the Stock were made in Philadelphia yesterday at 45. Great doubts are entertained in relation to the interest of the State of Ohio. The price of the Stock is, however, daily improving. ‘The stockholders of the Greenwich Bank,to which insti- tution we glluded a few days ago, have published a commu. nication in an evening paper, expressive of their determir nation to effect a change in the direction of the institution, or to require the interposition of the Bank Commissioners, In order to show at aglance the diflerentscales of diities that have been proposed, we have compiledYhe following table showing the specific duties according to the tarift of 1332, with those proposed by the committee, of which Mr. Saltonstall was chairman, and those proposed by the Se- cretary of the Treasury, as follows :— A Comparative STATEMENT OF THE TICLES BEARING Sreciric Dutire ACT OF 1832, AND BY THE WILL PROPOSED MITTER ON MANUFACTURE: THE SECRETARY oF THE T Duti Names of Articles. act of nels & Eaizes square yard Carpeting’ Brassels, fo Venitian &e, do: do, floor el'th pat do: Oileloth —. ee sallow r ; “do 15 5 Reer in Vortex do 0 ear ets" Oi, fish ke ~ 0 — Oil, olive = % » Py 40 3% 40 2 wv 2“ 2 a 6 ay 2 3 ae 2 4 wv é 1 we © s 7 6 w 2h z ’ 4 4 4 9 7 é 5 4 ‘ 4 2 2 2 2 - a 3 3 > 4 3 3 2 3 3 2 4 1 1 1 Da Ma a 4 3 4 1 1 1 Ke * 4 3 Sagar of lead 5 3 4 Lead, pig, &e 3 ae 2 ead pit sige: 4 3 4 be pa, ol serap « 2 Ve 1 rdage, tarre : . 4 ! 3 ¢ “ondage, utuarred : 5 5 6 ‘Twine, pack thread &e i : 5 pret 6 Corks + «+ . It is also remarkable that the only reductions proposed by the Secretary are in articles of agricultural produce, as butter, cheese, &c. &c., thereby taking from the farmer all benefit that might be derived to him from the duty on that which he has to sell, at the same moment that heavy impositions are proposed on every thing he has to buy.— The object is entirely, seemingly, to sacrifice every in- terest as well as the revenue of the country to foster the manufacturing interest. Annexed to the report of the manufacturer's committee is a table of the statistics of the Glenham Woollen Factory at Fishkill, Dutchess county, N.Y. That return is made for the purpose of showing the benefit which the agricultural classes derive from manufactures ; but strangely enough it contains state- wents that entirely destroy the intended effect. The capi tal of the Company is stated at, 140,000 And cousumes of the products of the neighborhood, ay me te. wool sa 954 Soi aay ia Teasles, Cords wood Wages paid to 170 operatives, Total, Itappears that the factories pay 42 cts. raised in the neighborhood ; before manuiactories were establishedj that wool was exported. The following is from the report : “When that establishment commenced operations in wool was bought up and shipped to England as a re- ce at 62} cts. per ib. England then levied aduty of a1 per Ib. ry about the year 1928,that duty was reduced That same quality of wool has, during that period of 10; ears, fluctuated considerably. It has varied from 70 to 40cents, and in 1941 was worth 60 cts.” The factories pay, it seems, 42 cts. yet Ib., being a loss of 20 ets. per Ib. to 0 farmer, or as fol 396 25 cents exported in 1923, Tae at ad) taken by factory 1841, $116,281 per Ib. for wool $106,160 12,954 Loss to Farmers, $33, Let ussee what the gain is. 170 persons receiv work $25,300, or 200 each per aunum, or about $4,0cts. per week, and find themselves ; but the statement of the company is as follows : « Not less than 500 persons are supported ont of the labor of 170 operatives, and consume weekly, of the product of agriculture, of beef, pork, four, butter, milk, eggs, cheese, Ke., at the lowest estitra’ion, the value of $200 per week, or 10,400 per annum. h.telligent farmers tell me that it must be an industrious man, on a farm of 200 acres, who can sell to the amount of $300 per annum, over and above the supply of his own family and work hands. To furnish, therefore, the supply for the manufactories, would require 13 farms of 200 acres each, or 2,600 acres. I estimate at $70 per acre, $192,000.” It then appears that out of $35,300 paid by the mannfac- turers, 500 persons are to get aliving. $10,400 is allowed for food, or 40 cts. each per week, and 80 cts. per week for allother necessaries, making 120 cts. per week, or 17 cts. per day each person. Manufacturing must be indeed a blessing to yield such a handsome living. If we allow that the 170 operatives consume the whole, then accord- ing to the statement of this singular document, it will re- quire 15} acres to support each person in that miserable low living. The population ofthe city of New-York is 312,710 souls ; accordingly it would require 4,794,387 acres ofland to supply them—valued at $70 are worth $335,641,- 310. We gotinto this calculation in order to show how utterly fallacious are the estimates and reports of mter- ested parties, who are secking to obtain an unjust end, and to what ridiculous results they will arrive if carried out. for Sales at the Stock Exchange, $2000 N. 6% ims ae 2% beled $1009 Minois Sixes 1781 Harte 30 i S00 ge RR s10 $1000, es do 50 $3900 Indiana Fives 9 do 0 shas Union Bank 100 ww do thw 2 Leath Mannf, Bk $8 418 do 7 Bankof America, 98 500 . 0 125 Del. & Hudson 'b3 100 100 do : Bodo 8K Bo jot Bs ts +] 4 E es 3 ees x oe ope casco | 1s 2 Rerdeng RR, @ Anburn, ue) i Mohawk 210 Summon it Second Board, 2 M vi 5 tat quail OS at Hace so ing n do 43'q 4000 en, Bonds Why State of Trade. ‘The business in the general markets Is pretty good, but not large.
