‘POSTSCRIPT. (cg There wes no mail south of Philadelphia last fight. Philadelphia, [Correspondence of the Herald.) ' Puavecenia, May 15, 1842. Political Movements and Counter Movements in Pevnsylvania—Buchanan for President, and ho- nest John Davis fir Governor—Highway Robbery, Theatres, Concert: The political elements here are quiet. Except aruifle oc- casionally like that ofthe “ Handy affair” and the Cus- tom House flare up, the political press would be out of fuel, at least so far asto prevent a public flame. That there is, nevertheless, some strong under currents heading each other is nottobe disputed. Buchanan is strongly urged by his friends, for the Presidency ostensibly in 184, , Lbelieve, aiming for that elevated post in 1848. Notwithstanding Buchanan’s popularity at home and abroad, he has enemies, or rather opponents of his own party, and a pretty strong force of them too. These, however, do not venture open opposition, but teck the more effectual mode of frustrating him by tging Col, Johnson for the Presidency and Governor Porter for Vice President. The Tecumseh killer has a pretty strong body of friends in the Western part of the tate, which makes him a desirable man for the weak and |. manovering to couple with. By this union of Johnson and Porter these olyects are hoped to be attained : first, the defeat of Buchanan ; second, the advancement of Col. Johnson, or at least the gratification of hs friends ; and third and last, Lg not least, the bolstering up of Gov. Porter's fame which has latterly received several pretty severe shocks, That Buchanan is decidedly the Pennsy!- vania candidate, so far as State pride is concerned, no one who knowsaught of public sentiment here, and has hones- ty enough to expressit, can question. He will carry the Vote of the State in convention by overwhelming odds a- gainst allopposition. Iam not friendly to his being taken up for President, nor do I believe he will be, in 1842. can, nevertheless, do him the justice to state the prospect of his supportin Fennsylvania, and am not #0 prejudiced but that I can acknowledge his commanding position, tnlents and character, as aman and Senator, Our gubernatorial contest is also opening in various quarters of the Commonwealth. A Mr. Plummer and one or two others have been started in the west, but here, and in all the eastern part of the State, there will be a vigorous push made to carry Col. John Davis, of Bucks. This is the only real “honest” John Davis in the country. He is one of the soundest democrats within the limits of the “keystone,” and when in Congress a year or two ago, made one of the best speeches on the Sub: ‘Treasury that was anywhere published. He is a plain farmer, wholly without the pale of cliques, and if elected, willdo more to restore the affairs of State to a pure and wholesome condition, than any one likely to become a candidate. “Honest John Davis”—that’s the word. A highway robbery wascommitted yesterday moming about 10 o'clock, on the western side of the Schuylkill, #nd about three or four miles beyond the river, upon an elderly German. He was knocked down, beaten and robbed of five hundred dollars in half eagles, and of thir- y-six dollars in silver. The robbers are described as men ‘of about 29 to 30 years of age, dressed in roundabouts— Dutchmer—one of them with a sore face, red whiskers anda cap. ‘The Walnut Street Theatre has opened for the summer son. The Chesnut remains closed, rumor says to be ed under the management of Maywood. Burton, it said, means to open a Theatre at Read g during the stay of the encampment there—whether with German or English performers is not stated. There are to be three or four concerts on Monday night Signors Ribas and De Begnis at the Musical Fund Hall, Dempster at the Masonic ; and another one or two in the upper part of the city. Concerts, topped off with ice creams and strawberries smothered in sugar and cream, are now all the go with our young folks. Charleston, 8.C.. [Correspondence of the Herald.] Cuarueston, 8.C., May 5, 1812. Mail Arrangements and Derangements—Fights— Runaway Marriage—Trade, § i. Bennett, Esg.— Dear Sin— You will sce by reference to our city papers of this morning'that the Chamber of Commerce of this city have called a meeting to take into considera- tion the propriety of petitioning Congress on the subject of the present mail arrangements. This is a good move, and the only wonder is that it has not taken place before now. We now have a failure per week, very regularly; and this week as bad as two—for the ‘mail arrived so late that it gave no time tor merchants and others to answer letters by return mail. Really our people are a forbearing : sople, after all, though they have the reputation of being quick to redress injuries. ttfs understood here that Mr. Huger, the present Postmaster, 18 to retire to his plantation—being tired of the cares of office, which he has hitherto held from other than pecuniary considerations. He isa man of fortune, with habits of leisure, rather than business, which had grown to pervade the whole establishment. He leaves all to his deputy— the deputy leaves all to his clerks—and the clerks eave all that they cannot do to-day with perfect ease till to-morrow or next day, or the day atter, which you willl say is not just as it should be in these days of going ahead. ‘There are, or was yesterday, two bags, bound to the north from New Orleans—paper bags—which have laid there three weeks, owing to some dispute among the posse of clerks as to whose duty it wasto forward them! There is, or was yes- terday, a large bag of papers from New York for New Orleans, which has laid in this office five days. Cause, probably the same. This is not as it should be, you willadmit. -Yet such is the case. Jn case Mr. Huger should retire, either from choice, or by removal (which certainly should fol- low a failuré to do so voluntarily), Wm. Patton, Esq., would be agood man tosucceed him. He is an experienced merchant, of thorough business ha- bits, and knows the wants of the community. He was the man pointed out by universal consent at the time Gen. Harrison came into power—when it was thought a removal would take place, to fill the office. Tis really to be hoped that something will be done to straighten the crooked in’ our mail aflairs. And it is to be hoped that the Herald will speak for us, It is said to be Capt. Tyler’s organ; therefore this piece of information will come under his notice and meet attention. | Fculon Sotgeond The Court, now in session in this city, is busy trying murderers, gamblers, and forgers—and it is thonght there will be little leniency with them, thongh a laxity in enforcing the penalty of the law exists everywhere else. We had a ‘‘ scrub fight” the other day—as a more genteel one could not be got up. Black eyes, bloody noses, and torn clothes, were the only damages. _ A runaway marriage came off yesterday, which created no little excitement in the neighbourhood of Market street. A race of the parties came off through the length of the market, when the young lady reached the home of her intended—the minis- ter was called—the mother finally consented—and “All went merrily as a marriage bell.” ‘There ismuch unchronicled fan going on in this U Meeth in the Park! QG@ TUESDAY AFTERNOON, MAY 17.—The Go- vernor of the State of Rhode I: d, THOMAS W. DORR, has arrived in this city on his return home from his mission tothe Federal Government. That mission has not resulted im any assurance on the part of the Jotter that the ple of Rhode Island will be allow- od to assert the. natural aud inalienable right of popular sovereignty without encountering the bay: Onets end cannon of the Federal Standing Army. As this is the first time that such an interference has been attempted or menaced in the internal affairs of a sovereign state; as it would bean act of flagrant and violent unconstitutionality and tyranuy; as it is, in the opinion of the undersigned, not less the duty of every trae and worthy American citizen, to resist such an ai tempt by every rightful mode and means, than it would be to resist a similar interference by the soldiers of the Bri- tish crown from the Province of New Brunswick; there- fore, ‘The undersigned earnestly call upon such of their fellow citizens as are in favor of Constitutional Liberty, the equal rights ofthe whole people, and the independence of the Sovereignty ot the States of the Union, to meet in the front of the City Hall, in the Park,on Tuesday afternoon, at six o'clock, to adopt the action called for from the le of New York, onso alarming and extraordinary an occasion. ‘A. He has kept heaping one attraction upon ‘another, till the theatres have sensibly felt the influence of the Museum upon their houses. The wonderful success of a Gipsy girl conti- nites to astonish, with her performances and revelations, all who hear her. She remains another week—also that inimitable Yankee delineator, Winchell, who keeps the audience in aroar of laughter. Miss Rosalie and Celeste are also engaged this week, besides a company of Indian Chiefs and Squaws—600 living squirrels and a host of cu- riosities. Theexperiments in Animal Magnetism are unique and highly interesting. (ge CHATHAM THEATRE.—The great American ‘Tragedinn, Forrest, whose fame is known far and wide, commences a limited engagement of six nights at the “People’s Theatre” in his celebrated character of Othello, in which he has the powerful aid of J. R. Scott, and the entire stock company. J. H. Kirby appears as Michaeb Karle in the after piece, ‘There should be an enlargement of the Chatham to-night, for it is not certainly lay enough to hold all that will flock there to witness ¢) mighty concentration of talent, QG@-EJAMES’S LAST NOVEL FOR:12} CE) he Double Extra New World, publish contains the wh century—one of the giving a graphic 3 bloody insurrection of the Fre! 12) cents; to newsmen and agents $9 per ‘orders by mail (post paid) will be supplied ies for $1; seventgen copies for $2; fifty for $5.
