Apiericas Cuprrns ix Cuina.—The Ang on Capt: Turner, and Ariel, Capt. Poor, schoonersiof 90 tons, arrived some {time} since from the United States, both makingt capital. passages. Notwith- standing which it was doubted) by nmany if such di- ininutive craft was capable of working to dward al sea against the strong winter monsoon; but a trial proved them at least equal to any sailing ves- sel which have visited these waters. They were despatched in a strong nerther ; the Anglona to Na- moa accomplished her voyage in a little over five days, going up in the very “ teeth of the gale” in 34 jays. The Ariel went to Manilla, where she re- ,.and was back at an anchor off the Prava G: 12 days. It was then proposed to try their speed with each other, and the 29th fixed upon for the race. Round Lintin Island and back to the starting point, a boat anchored off the Prava Grande. They went off in fine style at 9h 52m with a strong north wind which continued about 3 hours, when ‘Anglona had gained 3 miles to windward ; it after- wards became quite moderate, when the Ariel esta- blished her superiority in light winds ; by gradually elosing with her antagonist, taking the lead soon after penading Lanta, and coming in 17 minutes or 14 miles ahead. ‘Time Ariel 8h. 42m.; Anglona Sh. 59m tance sailed 65 miles.—Canton Press. Tur Rior cron THE Lone Istanp Rau. Roan. —We have obtained from the officers of the Com- pany the following statement in relation to the diffi- culty which occurred in the transportation of per- sons from Brooklyn, to witnass the great race on Tuesday 3 t ‘The trains commenced running at daylight, at one shilling fare until 8 o’clock, from which time until halfpast 11 two trains continued to run about every 40 minutes, with two thousand persons in each train, drawn by two locomotives each. At this hour the 8s became so great upon the cara, upwards of one findred and fifty persons piling themselves upon care calculated only for forty, that it entirely pre- vented the revolution of the wheels. The only al- ternative left was to detach a number of those over- loaded—on doing which, those persons lefi, some four or five hundred, became impatient, and pushed the cars toa descending grade beyond the Red- ford Depot. Here they were remonstrated with, and told of the imminent danger in which their lives would be placed by ranning, without control, cars down the grade from this point, and the dread- ful possibility, and even probability, of rseeting the 2 down trains ; but entreaty was vain and worse t useless, They started, but soon became angel at their own velocity, and many jumped off and were more or lessinjured. One poor fellow, named John Maney, « hatter of 141 West street of this city, had his leg broken. On the approach of the trains, they compelled the engineers and conductor to re- turn to the course, and they were obliged to yield, leaving thousands of persons at Brooklyn, waiting anxiously the return of the trains. Inthe meantime no means were allowed the agents ot the Company to communicate with the office at Brooklyn ; and the trains being momently expected, they continued tovell tickets, At about 1 o’clock the trains were disengaged and reached Brooklyn, and took off about persons, still leaving many, to whom the Money was returned. - Returming, the same difficulty, «nd others of a more cerious character occurred. The trains, after running twice to Brooklyn, became entangled in the crowd, who filled the cars to overflowing, leay- ing the track covered for more than a mile with persons ; and they were again compelled to proceed to Brooklyn, leaving several thousand persons at the race-course who had paid their money, without any means of getting through. This continued to be the case for several hours; and to prevent the cars returning, stones and timbers were placed upon the track, and three Passage cars were upset and de- molished. At ten o’clock, the obstructions were so great, and the water station being demolished, it was thought prudent to stop entirely the running of the trains. ‘ The Company had provided the most ample means for the transportation of every person who purchased a ticket, and could have done so with- out disappointment, could they have kept the con- trol of their trains, and the track clear. ose who witnessed the departure and safe delivery of trains of 2000 persons each, cannot doubt that it could have been done safely, and within a reasonable time. (G+ CHATHAM THEATRE.—This theatre was again crowded last evening, and the comedy of London Assurance received even more applause than it did the first night of ite performance. ‘The piece cannot be now better acted in this city, and it was never better produced as regards scenery and costlinesa of furniture. Why, Tom, how well and hearty you are looking. ‘The last time I saw you, you were worse, if any thing, than myself. (Coughs.) Oh! this horrid cough ! Tom. Ha! ha! I can make another man of you in a short time—give you a whole pair of lungs, and breathe new life into you. Tell (Coughs) Oh, oh! I have tried ir? 3 dis- how? and almost di a simplest remedy in the world. Pleasant to i eye—-sweet to the taste-+and can be purchased for a trifle. A. Never mind the price—(coughs)—money is of little use when life is uncomfortable. Where can I purchase it ? (Coughs) ‘Take pity on me. Tom. Will you promise to advise all your sick friends! and save all you ean from consumption ? aoe willingly. (Coughs.) Oh, I shall burst a blood vessel ! Tom. The remedy is Pease & Sons Horehound Candy, at 46 Division street. Go and buy two or three packages, and you'll thank me to the last day of your life. ‘A. Excuse me, Tom; I can’t stay any longer. to Pease’s at once. (Exit in haste.) (G- MIRACULOUS_ESCAPE FROM Emma D I'm off DEATH.— an interesting child, 11 years old, at 13 Liberty street, was horribly burnt } ing fire, so that the whole of her back, shoulders, arms and hands turned black, and the flesh shortly the arteries and_ veins completely exposed to the i ind every nail of her fingors was burned off. D: tof Liberty street, and Dr. Freeman of East Broadway, were called, and said it was impossible for the sufferer to survive, Dr. P. said any thing might be done to relieve her suffering while life remained. By the time Dr. Froeman arrived ive had been applied by Mr. Parker, which as the case hopeless, Di did not dis- turb. The acute agony was ry, relieved, but the child lay insensible, with the eyes fixed and immoveable, for several days. The salve was continued—the flesh be. gan to fall off, laying the blood vessels bare. ‘The Doctor viewed the case with astonishment and admiration, but allowed no deviation from the constant use of the salve. ‘The gentlemen of the house, Messrs. im, Henderson, Wakefield, and others, could hardly believe their senses in secing the child live from day to day. The child is cured, asight to be seen, scarce a scar temains where fully ! To any lady or gentleman who will call at 113 Liberty street, Mrs. er will be happy to show the Wonder. New who-will belfeve this? Alas, for the un- fortunate, the story is almost too great for human credui- lity—but Dr. Freeman, 272 East Broadway, and a house full of ladies and gentlemen at 113 Liberty street, will confirm on oath, every word of it, besides, a sight of this ‘most interesting and favorite child will make the truth self evident. The ba ae of humanity have brought out these witnesses. Will, we ask,a family in this elt i or country, risk themselves and their dear children to die inthis horrible manner by living a week without this salve in their houses? Can they claim to have natural affections, or can they ever forgive themselves, if they loose a child by neglect of this Specific for Burns ! Wednesday, May 11—6 P, M: ‘The stock market was more firm to-day, and prices gene rally went up. Delaware and Hudson rose 1 per cent, selling at 100, When this old gambling stalking horse touched par the imagination of the brokers being elated with visions of future speculations, time sales and corners prompted them to give three cheers for “old Delaware.” Probably many who greeted the rise will have their heads broke by the fall. We understand that the Indiana 5 per cents that were withdrawn from auction yesterday and placed with J. J. Palmer, Esq. of the Merchants’ Bank, have all since been taken at 20. The State Comptroller, A. C. Flagg, Esq. who has beenfin this city to attend to these matters, left this afternoon for Albany. It 1s stated that the new city 7 per cent loan has been taken. It is said that the Bank will goon. It had much better, however, wind up. An Ohio paper publishes a letter from George Collins, Esq. Commissioner for the West Union Bank, in which the following statement of its affairs is given :— I will give you something of detail: The circulation, when I became possessed of the books, &c. was about $116,000. I have redeemed the circulation, by collections of the paper of the bank to $96,000 or 97,000, the books are not before me at this moment—but mr statement is very nearly correct. To redeem the circulation, I found in the vank not quite $2,000, of available funds; 1 have since collected of good funds, $155 75-100.
