AYbany. [Conespondence of the Herald.) Aunany, May 5, 1842. Investments in the New Loa n—Gratifying Result of | tention, rally e! the Tar Bill. The 1,000,000 loan at 7 per cent recently adver- tised for by the Comunissioners of the Canal Fund, is moving off for permanent investments in sums varying from $2,000 to $20,000. Upwards of $10,000 hasbeen taken at Albany in this way with- in a few days, by private subscription. The pledge of the tax and of the tolls for the prompt payment of the interest, and for the ultimate reimbursement of the principal of this loan, assimilating it in prin- ciple to the original loans, for the construction of loan of 1817, make this loan, now open, a most do- sirable investment. There cannot be a quesiion that it is the very best description of stock now ofiering in the marketand its value, when sales come to be made, will no doubt prove to be above par. It is a matter of surprise that this stock | been taken by our capitalists. The money re ed from it is to be paid out to contractors for work lon since done by them. It could be taken here with- out remoying a dollar from the city, and would pay perhaps six or eight millions of debts in the interior of the State, and materially lighten up and revivif\ all descriptions of business. Morr Trovarx ror ve Loco Focos.—It was currently rumored among the political circles yea- terday, that John Pettigrew, Hsq., the Assistant Alderman elect in the Seventeenth Ward, is nota naturalized citizen, He came to this country at an early age, it is asserted, and from reference to the naturalization index, no such name can be found. We give this as a current rumor, not avouching for its correctness, however. Tur Race.—The race is in the mouth of every sporting man from mora to noon from noon to night. The southern blood is not up yet, nor are they ex- cited enough to back their ‘ White Nose” with any thing like long odds. They appear to be lying back in the high grass, waiting for the day to come, in fear that the courage of Fashion’s friends will give out too oon, and they thus be compelled to bet at heavy odds to secure opponenta, Nearly all the wagers posted yesterday were even up. n= Henman who saw the horses yesterday afternoon in- formed us that they were both in fine conditior presented every appearance of remaining so till Tuesday next. The n 009 on the part of Fashion, being made up by a club of northera sportsmen, they have as much at stake as they pro- bably feel disposed to risk nader present cireum- stances. Colonel Johnson, the “ Napoleon of the Turf,” ia on the ground, and will not risk his com- fort and the anxiety of his friends, by indulging in “cold lobster,” as he was wont to do, in the match between Eclipse and Henry. The present owners of the course, who purchased it mainly on account of the present race haying been eettled upon, have made extensive improvements and alterations in the public stands, thus giving suitable accommoda- tions for all who will he present. Several stables of horses have arrived, and the sweepstakes to be run on the same day will elso come off with interest. City Intelligenee. Parsextation of Trumrets to Ins—In accord. ance with a previous resolution of the Common Council, the members of the Fire and Water Committee, consisting of Aldermen Timpson, Hatficld and Franklin, A ant Aldermen Ward, Briggs and Adams, accompan! the Mayor, Alderman Purdy, and several other members of the Common Council, assembled last evening, at the Second Congregational Church, corner of Christie’ and Delancy strects, to present each of those Fire Companies, that had boldly come forwardin aid of the Temperance canse, with a beautiful Fire ‘Trumpet, in approbation of their Inudable conduct. At an carly hour the unreserved seats were filled with anxious epectat among whom were dots of female loVeliness sprinkled like gems in a coronet. At about nine o'clock, companies No. 15, and 41 were assembled and seated, and signals displayed in verious parts of the edifice 13, 13, 33, 43, 10, ith their banners ‘The Alderman then addressed the assemblage in a short neat, and eloquent spy whieh was followed by Alder- max Timpson, chairman of the Fire and Water Commit. tee, in a few pertinent remarks, when he called upon the representatives of Union Engine, Company, No. 18, Cha- tham No. 2, Express Hose Company No. 13, Hose Company No. 33, Mazeppa Engine Company No. 49, Wa ter Witch No. 19, Victory No. 15, and Clinton They appeared upon the platform erected for the purpos utifully — fuis tipped with silver, asd the name of the com* pany with that of the corporation tastefully engraved thereon. Tiel, of Hose No. 33, on behall of the hose companies, On con- cluding, one of the companies was called upon for a'Tem, perance song, which was given in excellent style, with full chorus. He expressed sued by the companies assembled, and concluded by wishing them success and prosperity in the path they had chosen, and speed for others to join them in their laadable and glorious work of reform, He was followed by Alderman Purdy, whose remarks were received with shouts of approbation, ‘The Mayor stated inthe early part of the evening that the Hon, Messrs. The vast assemblage retired about 11 o'clock with that grat fienti high as eworthy object.
