[Correspondence of the Herald.) Wasuixeros, April 24, 1842. Lord Ashburton’s Dinner—Dining and DI- plomacy—The Pipelayers—Mr. Tyson. Lord Ashburton’s first official dinner came off yes terday at six P.M. This functionary, who is said to have made his fortune on a rise in stocks, which hung npon the fate of a battle, is avery plain, Rene tlemanly looking man, with a face somewhat ¢are- worn, and a complexion which belongs to those who have lived, long and well. His suite are fine young men, generally bald, but with intellectual heads, though not very remarkable countenances. The private Secretary ¢ {his Lordship is said to be the cleverest of the Legation. In manners, they are ali self-possessed, somewhat stiff in the movements of their bodies, and few or no gestures escape them while speaking. Howdiflerentfrom the others of the foreign ministers here. Why, a lively French- man willgesticulate mere in a minute, with the phalanges of his dexter hand, than Mr. Mildmay could in the whole course of his natural life. But his Lordship’s porter has admitted us into the drawing room, and we are announced. Arie!!! the tricksy Ariel !! ‘The dinner was served npsoon after the hour of dining arrived. Late hours are, of course, in fa- shion every where among the diplomatic givers and eaters of dinnere, and this one was to take place at six. The table was of the longitudinal character, and there were present about sixteen guests.— Among them were the foreign ministers generally, men in Congress. There was no ceremony in en- tering the dining room, The guests “stood not upon the order of their going but wentat ence.” — Lerd Ashburton took the centre of the table. his right was Joho Quincy Adams—on his left John C Calhoun—opposite him sat General Scott. Mr. Fox was not present! It has been rumored that Mr. F. feels a little sore at this mission extra- ordinary. He perhaps supposes the business might have better been entrusted to hi But while we think very well of Mr. Fox’s abilities, we imagine that the length of time he has been in public life, has somewhat case-hardened him—that he takes no interest in public affairs beyond what his instruc- tions require of him; in ehort that he has more head than heart, and thata negotiation, controlling the destinies of two great nations, affecting every cot- tage in remote England, and every log hut beyond our mountains, is no more to Mr. Fox, than any other negotiation, and that he would conduct it on the same cold, skilful, and gentlemanly manner in| peeves. Faction—faction—! which he would a game ofecarté, and in no other wa) Lord Ashburton is rather a man of the people—is identified with the prosperity of the commercial classes—would be unhappy, truly unhappy, to see mother and daughter at variance, and he would rather sacrifice the twenty-five townships he owns in the State of Maine, but to which he has scarcely given a thought for many years, and of which now, for the firet time, he learns the real value, than in- vole us in a war,—the scourge of nations and the de- solation of mankind. Mr. Fox was not present. Verbum The table was [beautifully laid out, but as all his lordship’s plate has not arrived, there was no pla- teau in the centre, and no vases elaborate in art, and perfuming the saloon with the choicest cullinge of | © the conservatory. But, while it did not rival the regal board of Mr. Bodisco, it was still very elegant, and vEno es the skill of an accemplished Major Domo. There are twenty-one servants in the house, and the reader may well imagine what a god-send a | ble gentleman, oged about 50 years, subject to sudden at- score of beef eaters must be to the cattle graziers in this city. Indeed, the out-go of hislordehip's estab- lishment will be so large, and the profit so immense to the retailers here, that we should not be surprised if they proposed, in the course of a few months, to | Morning pul purchase the claim of England to the disputed terri- tory, and present it, as a mark of their gratitude, to people of Maine, for being so much the cause of the present mission. As his Lordship has three cooks of the utmost talent, artists whom Ude himself would not have blushed to take by the hand, the dinner was not only superb but ificent. The meats were all nicely carved, and 1 fashion ; and the game, of which there wasa great variety, was all cut up and divided by the cooks, be- fore it was served up; then reinstated in form and figure, ready to drop apart at the touch ef the first fork. Course after course succeeded, delicious to the palate and agreeable to the eye; the wines were rich and soft, and high flavored, having the body and strength which belong to the English cellar, Champaigne was passed freely round, but no other wines of France, and none from the Rhineland, met oureyes. If diplomacy expresses its feelings at the dinner table, by its preferences as for meats and drinks, then we say to Germany and France, En land likes not the Zoll Verein, nor the backing out Tom the quintuple treaty for the right of search. No! no! hard cider and Monongahela, which stout- ly represent the apples and the cornstalks of Brother Jonathan, shall find favor on the festive board of John Bull, when Chateau, Margeaux and Vin de grave shall be forgotten. The conversation it would be improper to divulge. We do not believe it right, thongh it may be fash- mecié to retali conversations and steal correspon- dences. We will only say, that the remarks were all of a friendly spirit, now and then approaching the confines of rigid propriety, when they related to. the quality of eur steamships and the diflerences of our discipline. hy The dessert among other things exhibited a large number of the choieest fruits of England, beauti- fully preserved, fair to the eye and delighttul te the taste. They were much admired by the gueste, and produced a round of encemiums on the garden from which they were se a In due time coffee succeeded, and then the guests departed, much pleased with this first of a series of entertainments, with which the new Envoy com- mences his mission. For some years, “the meteor flag” of England has not floated very gaily in Wash- ton. Mr. Fox isa man ot retired habits, somewhat peculiar, and does not care for popularity “with the natives.” A new eystem of operation is commenced. The Boundary line is to be adjusted on the dinner tabl+ in streams of sherry, the right of visitation is to be exercised in diplomatic hospitalities. and the joss of the Creole is to be made up in black and white. In taking our leave, we did not forget that the fourteen servants in livery,—blue coats, black vel- vet shorts and striped waistcoats, had done their best to fill our plates with the daiaties of his Lord- ship’s table. Some curious developements have recently been made here relative to the pipe layers of New York, illustrating their characteristic corruption and con- gummate impudence. _ 1 Prior to the nomination of Gen. Harrison, Mr was dispatehed to Cincinnati with a pro- position to this eflect: that the State of New York could be carried in favor of Gen. H_, provided a cer- tain amount of money could be raised for that pur- ose ; that this money could be raised and the pipe layera would see that it was done provided Gen. Harrison would give to them the nomination of the officers in the City and State of N. York. This pro- position was submitted in writing to the Committee of Whigs at Cincinnati, who said nothing in reply, except that they advised Mr. § ot to make it to the old General personally. Nothing daunted by this advice, Mr. S. proceeded to North Bend and opened the subject to Gen. Harrison; but he did not proceed far before a single frown from the old hero put anend to the business, After this they very suddenly discovered that Gen. Harrison was not popular, and that Scott was the favorite of New Yerk, and those who were so ¢lamorous in 1836 for Harrieon, discovered in 1839 thatGen Harrison was not the favorite candidate of New York. But the people interfeared, and put their veto on this matter, and then the pipe layers shifted their ground, and claimed te be the exclusive friends of Gen, Harri- “Who but they?” This matter is of some interest just now, as it is said that letters have been received here within a day or (wo, announcing that, the pipe layers are about to come on here in great force, with the intention of cajeling the administration with promises, that are never made but to be broken. They hope to succeed through the assistance of their coadjator in the Cabinet, but they mus: not rely upon him, for he will need all his wits to sustain himseif| The truth ie, and it may as well be told—theee men are despised here by all parties They have promised all, and betrayed all, and neither the President on th: one band, nor the friends of Mr. Clay on the other, will be humbugged by them hereafter. So reckless have they been in their promises and their perfidy, that they have committed themselves in writing— and we know where the letters are to be found—t« three several candidates for the Presidency, all with- in the last eight months But it is idle to waste pow der and shot on dead ducks.
