‘- rusts sCRIP ‘Washington, [Correspondence ef the Herald.) Wacsntnctos, April 17, 1812. Death of a Member of Congress— African Co~ lonizatien—Picasing Incident—Anecdote of Gen, Jackson and the Portuguese Minister The Hon. Mr. Lawrence, a representative in Con- gress from Pennsylvania, died at his lodgings 19 this city this morning. Mr. Lawrence was a resi dent of Washington county, where he was univer sally beloved and esteemed. He was a man of ex cellent understanding, of sound, matured judgment, of very respectable acquirements, much experience in public affairs, an/ a private character without re- proach. This ia the fourth member from Pennsy|- vania that has died since the election of the present Congress. The death of Mr Lawrence will be an- nounced at am early hour to-morrow, when the House will adjourn. The funeral will tuke place on Tuesday. r : Considerable progress is making by the African Colonization Society, which holds its‘office at this place. The Rev. Mr. Gurley, corresponding secre- tary of the society, devotes bimeelf to its purposes and objects with an intelligent zeal end an earnest- ness that must command success, and there seems to be a generat a® rowing interest in the subject jn various parts of che country. A gentleman: in Louisiana offers to'liberate and send to Liberia, on the lst ‘of May next, from 8) to 86 slaves, which he has long been preparing for freedom. They aie stated by a respectable indi- vidual, not their ewner, to be worth $150,000, and are of the best character. Their master observes— «+ Knowing these people, as I do, for the greater part of them have been born under my roof, I do not hesitate to say, should they go to Liberia, that they willbe the most valuable acquisition, for their num- ber, which the Colony has ever received, and would tend in a higher degree to the advance- ment of her best interests, than ten times their number, taken generally through the United State; eying nothing of their morul and religious charac- ich merita high commendation, they have aoe Pamared to habits of order and industry ; most of them read well, some write, and several among them, both male and female, are capable of becom- ing Common School teachers. But for their talents as artizans, mechanics, agriculturalists, ar-maketr, sugar-ketile rete oe Teme build ers, builders of sugar-house chimnies—each of which is @ separate trade or profession—black- smiths, carpenter masons, &c &c They are emphatically the population which Siberia stands greatly in need of, and who are formed to advance its interests. Another gentleman states—‘‘about 55 are adults, the balance. of children from six to twelve years of age, and this will be the most valuable emigration ever from this country. They are worth $150,00) —of excellent mora! habits, and some of them preachers of the Gospel.” A_ pleasing circumstance occurred in the Senate, while sitting in executive session, a few days rince. it was trivial im itself, but it is worthy of notice, as showing that political differences are sometimes for- gotten in the exercise of kindly personal feelings. ‘When the nomination of Mr. Prentiss, then a mem- ber of the Senate fiom Vermont, to the office of District Judge of his State, was laid before the body, Mr. Calhoun, a decided political opponent, rose and moved that the rule of the Senate, under which every nomination ie referred to the appropriate com- mittee, be dispensed with on this occagion, and that the nominativn be acted wpon atonce. The motion prevailed without epposen and the nomination ‘was unanimously confirmed. Mr. Prentiss, although no debator, is a sound law- er, and was a very useful member Of the Judiciary mmitte. ‘The President ave 'a_splendid diplomatic dinner on Friday, at which Lord Ashburton and all the for- eign. Ministers, tre Cabinec, Messrs King, lives and Woodbury, of the Senate, and Messrs. Proffit, Wiee and Black, of the House, were present. Meationin, ng the foreign ministers, calls to mind an anecdote of Gen Jackeun, and thePertuguese Charge des affaires, which Baillie Peyton used. to tell with t effect. When Mr. McLane was Secretary of tate, anew minister arrived from Lisbon, and a day wasappointed for him to be Leconte to Presi- dent Jackson.gThe hour was set, and the Secret expected the minister to cull at ‘the State Dey ment for him: but Mclane’s French is like that of the prerent translator to the Sarena rather dffii- cult of comprehension, and the uese misun- derstood him, and preeveded to ee hite House alone. He rang the bell, and Jimmy O'Neil, Mar- tin’s predecessor, came 'o the door. “Je quis venu voir, Monsieur Je President,” said the minister. “What the devil _does that mean?’ muttered Jemmy—“ he says President, thougl., and | s’pose he wants to se hd © Oui, ou',” said the Port se, bowing. So Jemmy ushered him into the green Hern where the General was smoking his corn cob ‘with great composure. The minister made his ip tothe President, and addressed him in French, of which the General did not understand one word. “ What does the feilow say, Jemmy ?” “ Divil aknow I knows—I reckon he is a furri- ner. “Try him in Irish, Jemmy,” said Old Hickory. Jemmy gave him a touch of the genuine Milesian, but the minister only shrugged his shoulders with the usual “ lait: i." “Och!” says Jimmy, ‘he can’t go Se asir—he’s French byJazurs.” Then eend for ateg French cook and let him try if he can find out what the Lee ray wents ” Thecook was hurried trem the kitchen, sleeves rag led UP » apron on aid the carving knife in ‘ne Mimater seeing this formidable ap rage doubting that he was in the presence of Lie bead ot of the nation, feared some treachery and made , the door, before «hich Jimmy planted himseli to keep him in. When the cook by the General's =e asked him who he was and what he wantcd, ave a very subdued answer, to the astonishment rt e cook, the President aud Jimmy who now dis- covered forthe first time the character of the stran- eer. Ia this stage“of the business Mr. McLane came in, and the miaister was presented in form—but the matter could never be alluded to in Oid Hickory’s Presence without throwing him inte a passion. Balt re. [Correspondence of the Merald.} Bavtimors. April 18, 1812. A Solemn Day—Nobdie conduct of our Mayor. Ma. Eviror -— Yesterday, though inclement, was a solemn day, From the rising sun until the setting thereof, our streets wereone scene of funeral solemnity, earrying to their last long resting places, the bodies of a portion of those who met death upon the ill-fated Medora. Some of the victims had been members of various fire companies, and in consequence, the whole fire department turned out in procession, exhibiting the last marks of respect to their mortal remains. ‘Phe solemn tone of the music, the muf- fled drum, the tolling of bells and the sad countenances pectators, as the procession moved slowly onward, biought home to the heart a feeling which found its way through more than ene eye, and became eloquent in the potent language of overswelling tears.
