Each piece was received with unbounded applause. The new drama of Abelard and Heloise, is repeated to night, to- gether with the admired farci of the Widow's Victim, in which John Sefton sustains three different char- acters—and the successful drama of the Falls of Nia- ga 0G COUGHS are still prevaleut among those who have not used Sherman’s Cough Lozenges. The suc- cess attending the Doctor’s medicines is really astonish- ing —Who ever heard of curing a cough ora cold in one ortwo days until Dr. S's Lozenges were offered to the public ? ‘Wholesale and retail warehouse at 106 Nassau street ; 8 State street, Boston ; 3 Ledger Buildings, Phil- adelphia, and Frank Taylor's, Washington City, QG+ WINCHELL the unrivalled laughter-proveking, i i iu a continual ight at the American Museum.— His diversified entertainments are to be repeated to-night. His representations of the Michigan hosier, the self-wise orator, the Gad «| Dutchman, and the shrewd, wide awake and dare-devil Yaukee are unprecedented.’ The company of Indian chiefs and their equaws perform a va- riety of dances und pantowmimes, dressed in their native costume. Such attractions combined with all the curi- osities collected in the Museum for tweaty-five cents, are worthy the patroaage of all classes. Too much can- hot be eaid in fovor of the neatuessand good order which cheracterize this popuiar place of resort. A day per- formance to-morrow 4 oon. 0G ACHILD WITH THREE HEADS.—By the las accounts the great lion of the day at Amsterdam, in Hol- Jand, was achiid with three heads, the faces looking outwards, like those of Janus. This is certainly agreat prodigy. But we have agreater prodigy in this country —namely, Peter's Lozenges, which cure sea-sickness, Dyspepsia, Headaches, Coughs, Colds, Worms, Low Spirits, Nausea, &e., with as much certhinty as eating roast beef cures hunger. Talking of these things, it may be as well to state that they are to be had at 459 Broadway, 150 aud 330 Bowery, 416 Hudson and 210 Chatham streets, New York, and at 90 North Sixth street, Philadelphia. But on the contrary, the child with three heads is only to be seen at Amsterdam, in Holland. OG@IFACTS WORTH KNOWING.—A positive stay fortune falling out—or to restore it in baid places. A certain cure for Corns. & Kach ofthese to be bad at 71 Maiden Lane, and such proofs of these facts as will convince all who will callor send for them, gratis. The public may rest assured there is no fancy in these assertions. _ The following is to be found at 71 Maiden Lane in this city:— [For the Journal of Commerce.] Troy, Feb. 13, 1842. Mr. Editor—I have seen of late much written in your paper relative to Dall Magical Pain Extractor, and a few days sis I noticed a certificate concerning the lit- irl Emma Davis. Being myself a mother, and hav- ing known many cases of the efficacy of this salve, one particularly in my own family, in which my procious child was saved from much torture and disfiguration— my feelings strongly prempt me to urge parentsof chil- dren to lay aside prejudice and use this ointment in cas- es of eccident by" Are, or on any injury where there is inflammation. Should the humane mother be less wise in the generation than those of the brutes of the field ? Shall she allow prejudice, that mean and sneaking thing, to warp her judgment where the good of her offspring 1s atstake? Do not the sheep, the dove, and other timid creatures forsake the natural fearlessness of their na- tures and become bold in defence of their youn: which is right, even shou scribe a different treatment? I answer dauntlessly for my ownsex—No. Should a beloved child of mine be- their Maker, suffer anything to deter us from d come severely burnt | should immediately fay thie salve shall be used, and this alone. 1 apologize, Mr. Editor, for writing s0 much, but my feelings been’ my dic- tates, and they must be my excuse, Yours respectfuli; A Mornsn. The stock market has exhibited the usual features to day, and prices h generally given wa: count. The resumption in Philadelphia goes on well so fer, and, with a firm determination to persevere, on the part of the Banks, will no doubt be suceess(ully carried out. The bill imposing a tex uf one mill on every $1 valua- tion of taxable property in the State, has passed the lower House of the State Legislature by a vote ef 50 to 27. This bill will no doubt become a law, and, according to the estimates, will yield $600,000 per annum; a sum which, with economy, will meet all the wants of the State. The moral influence of the imposition and collec. tion of a tex, at atime like this, will no doubt mense effect, aud will again place the credit of | in the front rank. Every exertion is used, and every misrepresentation made, by the Clay faction, not only to destroy the credit ofthe country, but to prevent any action for relief. The Courier and Enquirer is daily occupied in this laudable occupation. A few days since it contained the follo: Paragraph in relation to the proposed exchequer is sues :— The consequence of this must be to greatly lessen th. circulation ot the banks if not entirely to break th down. The amount of notes issued by the Exchequer would not, clearly, be sufficient without the aid of the noterof the banks, to supply the wants ef the country ; d independent of the ruin that must accrue to thou- nds by tI ilure of the numerous banks now in good credit, the emount of circulating medium would be di- minished toan extent which would be rly compen- sated by the safety that would be insured to the individ. nal holders of the specie notes. This paragraph is the progeny of a desire to combine the bank influence against the bill, as well as an utter ignorance of the practical operation of the issues. The Clay projet of a National Bank, with credit ivsues, would inevstaly break down the banks, because such a circu- ate Jation would come in competition with that of the banks, drive it in, and ruin the most profitable part of their bu- siners. On the other hand, the dollar for dollar iseues of the exchequer would not come in competition with, but would become the basis of the bank issuer. The exche. ‘ aleat for specie, and would be retained as such by the banks asa quer istues would in every respect be the eq basis, instead of the precious metals, According to the last repert the banks held about $35,000,000 of specie. If y into the exchequer, $90,000,000 of this should find its wa in addition to $10,000,000 more now hoarded up, an equi- valent of $40,000 000 of bills would be issued, of which $10,000,000 oF $12,007,000 would be taken up in the ex. the sub stratum of their iseues, in the pri and joint exchange o! more safe and profitable. The banking «ffi tion to banking were closed by the Sheriff on the 9.b inst, viz: the Atchafalaya, the Orleans, and the Ex- chonge. The President of ;the former, Mr. Breedlove, as also,Mr. Yorke, of the Exchange, resignod, and the paying teller of one of the banks absconded, leaving a deficiency of near $160,000 in his accounts, the over drafts of himself and friends. When the Exchange Bank was closed by the Sheriff, the assets found were— $4625 3,920 8,545 in cirewlation ex. mene lotes of other Banks —and it is stated the not»s of the ban © -ed $60,000.
