The business of the State Bank of New York has been re- moved from the banking house formerly occupied by the U. &. nch Bonk, to No 27 Wall street, in consequence of the opening of a street from Wall to Pine street, next to the Custom House. For this purpose fifteen feet are to be taken offofthe bank buildiog. The opsration is at the expense of the general government. Since the resignation of Samuel Brooke, Esq. us Presi- dent of the Harlem Rail Road Co., T. A. Emmett, Esq. Vice President, has presided. A committee of five have een investigating the effairs of the company, and report satisfactorily Mr. Brooks resigned, being unwilling to encounter any longer the opposition from Wall street. Vigorous mea¥ures are pursued to reduce the expenses ofthe company ; #mong other items cut off is that of $400 paid annually tothe Wall street prints. A useless outlay is thus saved to the stockholders. ‘The Pine PlaiM Bank has declared a semi-annual divi- dendof font per cent, pryable on demand ; the Bank of Foughkeepsie, a semi annnal dividend of four and a half, payable on demand ; the American Insurance Compa. Some tales of real estate took place to-day, the de- tails of which will be found under the head of “State of Trade.” The applications fur discharge from debt under the Dankrapt law, have commenced with great vigor. Great haste is made to push through the forms ofthe law and obtdin a discharge as ayeedily as potsible, for fear Con- grees may yet portpone the operation of the law, which would have the eifvet of stay ng all proceedings under itno: perfecte!. Taose in whose behalf notice te cred Store to show cause was made public to day,.cinnot re. ceive their cettii ates under 7 days. Inthe meantime the banltrapt will af all thoes be subject to examination ik aw he eter There ist orally or upon written interrogatories, before the court op oath, in all matters relating to his bankruptcy, which are necessary for the purposes of justice. Ifin any case of baukruptey, a majority, in (number and value, of the creditors who shall have proved their debts, shall at the time of hearing of the petition for a discharge, file their written dissent to the allowance of a discharge and certi- ficate, to the bankrupt, er if, upon hearing, a discharge shall not be decreed te him, he may demand atrial by jury, upon a proper iseue to be directed by the court, or he may appeal from that decision to the Circuit Court. And, if, upon @ full hearing, it shall be found by the court or the jury, thatthe bankrupt has, in ali things, complied with the requisitions of this act, the court shall decree his discherge Very many of those who apply for a discharge are living in a style of eplendor far above that which is within the means ef their creditors. These should promptly and v@prously combine, and sift outthe real connection of the bankrupt with the property which surrounds him. Ht isthe only chaace for the creditors, against whom the law is arrayed, te protect their right Under the late Benking system, the credits created by trusting these peeple were called property. Benks and individeals that keld their paper censijered it as good property. The amount of thet groperty represented by those who applied fordischarge yesterday in this city, is estimated at $6,000,000. Tis, by the operation ef the law, willbe annihilated. The hope heretofere enter- tained of being able to reelizesemething from those debts has kept alive the hope of being able to pay ether debts. That chianceis now destroyed, and the probability of creating many other vankrupts is increased, who, in their turn will apply for a discharge, and centribute to pulldewn-seme others in their turn. The avalanche is now hanging over the heads of thousands who little dream thetthey are in danger of being crushed in the fail. What Gittle property i possessed or will be dis gorged by the bankrupts will be put upon the market, and will greatly affect the value of other property.— This witl,ne doubt, mostly consist of real estate, bonds and Mortgages, kc. ko. and it is precisely this descrip. tion of .preperty in which the greatest decline may hereafter be expected. The losses in this description of property enust fallonthelenders. As aninstance of the extent ofthe loans, we give the following comparati' table ofthe affairs of the New York Life and Mrust Co., which inetitution is considered one of the best, if not the very best, stock inthe State. The mortgages have no doubt been looked after, and changed from time to time with due skill and caution. The returns.are those of 1842 and 1841, and the leading features of those of 1637.
