The clearances indicate the goods sent in return to the interior for consumption. 1839 was ayear of expansion, consequently the exports of produce were small and the imports of merchandice large, which resulted in suspension. In 1940 the banks prepared for the temporary resumption that took place in 1941; the result was large exports and diminished imports. During the past year the suspended banks, as the above table indicates, kept thecurrency full, andthe result has been diminished exports and increased im- ports, with extended discredit and depreciation of the local currency.
