Annest or A suProsep Foroer.—A person, for- merly of a very respectable standing in society, and who heretofore was never even suspected of a crime, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon by officer Stokely, charged with being the person who com- mitted ‘the recent forgery of the cheek on the Me- chanies’ Banking Association for $1500. It willbe remembered that this check was presented on Fri- day, Dec. 31st, by a smart, intelligent boy, named Charles M‘Gaskili, and the fsee of it purported it to have been drawn by C. W Thwing, broker, of Wallstreet. The money was paid, und the boy stated at the time the forgery was discovered, that the check had been given him by a man oppesite Pine’s Coffee House, to whom he gave the money, and received 50 cents for his trouble. The 50 cents he borrowed from some person in Pine’s bar, which was not repaid. The boy identified the person ar- rested as the individual who gave him the check, Cou t of Oyer and ‘Terminer, Before Judge Kent, and Aljermen Purdy and Lee. . There was more talk than work to-day in both Houses. The Senate did little, and after a Session of about an hour or less went into Exeeu Ses- ion. Whether the Governor succeeded in having his nominations confirmed by the Senate, rumer does not say. At all events, on yesterday the Senate refused to go into Executive Session by a strict party vote, and this holding: back look: all might not goon quite as smoothly as a marriage bell. The Assembly proceedings were characterized with litt.e of general interest. A long debate was had on the coming up of the bill changing the mode of appointing bank receivers, which continued until the Houseadjourned. Maj Davezac did not call up his resolution, so there was no speech from him to-day, and a crowd of visitors were again dis- appointed. It is insinuated that the Major has been coaxed by his political friends to defer the consideration of the resolutions until certain other matters shall have been adjusted. A great many petitions were presented to-day, prineipally from the western part of the State. You can form no idea of the intrigues, plote, and counter-plots, that are going on in the apparently unbroken ranks of tke Democratic party. The Anti-Regency pertion of the party, made a slight demonstration on Monday in their especial organ, the “ Atlas,’” in a pungent and well-argued article, headed “ Rotation in Office.” Of its nature you can judge from its title. As yet no outward attack or defence bas been made by the regency par excel lence. The storm will burst in all its fury, should the Regency be successful in the election of State officers. Then what are now smothered inte = t tered threatenings and murmuring, will ripen inte open denunciation and fierce opposition, which must result in the disorganization and overthrow of the now triumphant Demoeratic party. I: may be that with the good fortune that always has hitherto attended the Locofocos, these differences will be smoothed over and overcome, but it must be con- ceeded that the aspect of things is any thing but favorable to such a suppo: hile the Whigs are chuck! t every endeavor in their power to prom We had a very Jarge funeral proce: honor of the late Wm. Dis- covered nothing but bleod on the floor. Do not know how loug she had been in the privy. She did notaccount how the cord had been separated.— She washed oa the previous Saturday, in the yard, when it was rainy. She complained on Sunday of being unwell. Went into her room soon after dis- covering her situation. There was no appearance of her having been delivered there. My husband heard of it when he came home to dinner. He did not refuse to have the child taken eut for fear of being sent to prison. Thinks the prisoner wanted to have the child taken out that night. On Mon- day morning -he told me she had drank some hot tanzy tea on the previous evening. She got up very early and called me and said 1 mnst ge down and make a tire, for she was unable to, as she was very sick and full of pain. She then went up to her room. Where public justice is to be benefitted we feel ready at all times to waive the publication of any police matter; and in this ease, at the request of some of the prisoner's friends, we so far abide by this course as to abstain from publishing his name, until a final commitment is made out. Democratic Movemenrs.—The election in the Sixth Ward yesterday for threy delegates to repre- sent the democracy of that ward in the General Committee at Tammany Hall, resulted in the selec- tion of Michael Walsh, John Emmons, and Con- stantine Donohue, by about one hundred majority. The Young Men’s General Committee met at Tam- maey Hall lastevening. The delegates from the Twelfth Ward were sent back and an election or- dered for new ones on the evening of Wednesday next, at Vandewater’s Five Mile House. The dele- gation from the Sixteenth Ward, elected at the meeting presided over by Mr Campbell, were re- ceived, and the committee adjourned to meet again on Wednesday, 26th inst., when ofiicers will be elecred. Case ov Hexay F. Mitcuett —At the hour of 2 yesterday afternoon, the above named person was brought in‘o the Ccurt of Sessions, for the purpose of being present during the argument of counsel re- lative to an arrest of judgment in the recent verdict rendered against him He evinced the effects of his clese confinement by a decided alteration in his physical appearance, but listened attentively, as the arguinent proceeded. Messrs Graham and Smith appeared as counsel on his behalf, and the principal point of their argument foran arrest of (cea was confined to the alleged illegality of the Alder- men to sit ag associate judges on the bench of the court in which Mitchell was tried and convicted. The District Attorney replied at length, and diesect- ed the decision of the Supreme Court in’ the case produced by opposing counsel, and further contend- ed that a motion to arrest judgment, on the ground of the illegality of the Court to try, or that the Court was unconstitutional, was an unheard of positien for counsel toassume. He further contended, that the application of counsel to obtain an arrest of judge ment while they had already prepared a bill of exceptions, was also a strange and illegal move- ment é i The Court reserved their decision until a future day.
