s “Sloop Refolution, Adonijah Pike, Acsennt of the Inundation in England in Offober laff. - . L O N-D O N; ' Ofober 23. The fudden overflowing of the waters, occa- fioned by the violent rains and north winds on Tuefday morning; about Stratford, ’W’efi-Ham, Plaiftow, Waltham-Abby, and for twenty miles north of Londoh, haye been very fatal tothe in- habitants. Moft of their cattle inithe fields were carried off ; Tikewifc {tacks ofhayand wood with' the lofs of zll their hogs that were in their fties and yards, together with all the horfes that were in ftables ; for the waters rofe twelve feet in lefs than five hours, which was in the dead time of the morning, for there was nothing of it perceived at one o’clock, and it reached their chamber-windows before five ; and the face of the water was covered with the bodies of the beafts that perifhed. Meflts.Graceand Lefevre loft 500 hogs, befides nine hotfes. The ' inha- bitants, from the neareft computation they can- make, fay, that 5000 hogs have perifhed in this . flood ; together with all the horfes and other cat- tle that were in the meadows, whofe numbers were very confiderable. Fhis flood has exten- ded itfelf over all the marfhes ; and the current 1s {0 firongintheroads thatnohorfe can poflibly get thro” it : there has been feveral people loft ‘already : a woman and horfe were driven away “ by'the viclence of the ftream ; as was alfo a gentleman in a poft-chaife, who, with the poft- +boy and horfes 2ll perithsd in the water ; and three of the paflengersin the Bury machine, with twocfthehorfes, were alfo drowned. We daily expect to hear of more damage,as the oldeft man living does not remember a flood a“tenth part "o dreadful as this. " The houfes from the Swan .at Stratford to Bow-Bridge, are all overflowed, and the inha- bitants were obliged to getoutat their windows. The waeer in the road was yefterday morning above three feet deep, and came into the car- riages as they pafled along. Kelvedon and Chefterford bridges, in Effex, are carried away, and the mails of confequence are not artrived. . ; The rains in the neighbourhood of Nerwich continued all Wednefday without intermiffion, but abated 'on Thurfday morning. It was 13 inches higher than the flood called St. Faith’s Flood in 1696 ; not fo high as the great flood in 1646 by eight inches ; nor as St. Andrew’s Flood in 1614 by 13inches. In many of the ftreets, boats were plying to carry provifions, and affift the diftrefled. "I'he water is conjectu- ‘red to have rofe about twelve fect perpendicular. “T'he damage cannot, as yet be afcertained, but is fuppofed to be near 10,0c0l. - In the neighbourhood of Briftol, the late rains were fo heavy, that the' waters overflowed - the country, and obliged the inhabitants to live in the upper parts of their houfes, the water being in the lower parts feveral feet deep. Great dam- age has been done ; and particularly to the brafs company by the water gettiug into the pits where the metal was melting. By advices received from all parts of the king- dom, we are informed, that feveral thoufand cattle of all kinds have been drowned by the late dreadful inundations. : Monday morning about one o’clock, the whole tier of fhips lying ot Wapping OldStairs, broke a-drift and drove over the ebb tide, and did a confiderable deal of damage ; all which was owing to the obftinancy ofone fhip crowding into the faid tiet. i P QURYT ‘SuNE Oty T We are informed by fundry credible Perfons, that within this Six Weeks paft, they have fold a great Number of Dollars, at the Rate of five Pounds, Q.
