My aniwer was, that none of my fhips had centrabsnd goods on board, snd thet [ weuid not fuffer them to be vifited. 'The Hazard kept up with me till towsrds night ; fome hours after, the Tryal of 16 guns,Cept, Cuupingham, made the fame demand, snd received the {amean(wer, but on a fignal from the Trysl the Hunter of 14 guns, Capt. Vergis, bore towards her, and the two Captains conferred ; {oon after the Try- sl bore away 1o the Downs, and the Hunter contin- ued to follow me. The 24ih, juft as [ entered the Streights of Calsis, the Hunter made fignals, with & dfign, no doubs, to bring fome men of wer to her sfliftanc ;and in conlgquence of this, in the afternoon o' the 25:h, I faw myfelf furrounded by leven En- glih ifhips great snd {mall, smong others was the Diana trigate, Cept Adams, cf 32 guns, and 220 men. An z¢t of gencrofity worthy the conqueror of the anmnlh. and deferving to be imitated by ell other vi€tors, who generslly acquire both their lsurels and riches &t the expence of thele poor fellows and their families, The following is (sid to be sn suthentic specdote, relaitiog ta the desth of the late urhappy Emperor Peter III..... When the lateBmperor ot Ruffiz furren- dered himfelf to his wife, who came, Amazon like, st the hesd of 10,000 men to demznd hisfrefigration, he was immediately confined, and all vilitor denied edmittance to his perfon. When he found there were no hopes lelt for his liberty, he requefted two things to be allowed him ; one was, that he might heve the Pruflian uniform, the other, that a very favourite fervant, & Negro, who'e name wes UtowiTz, might attend him.....,. The bumane Emperor adding, that he was certain the poor fellow would pine himfelf to death if ha was o be feperated from his mafter. In rwo or three days, siter this Negro hed been properly inflructed, he was fent to wait upon his maiter, and one of his firft aéts of duty was, to give Peter the IIId & melon, which was progerly prepared, sccording tothe (es we may {uppole) proper political {cheme. The dofe was violent, the difpsich extraordinary quick, and the body immediately opened. The entrails were teken out, that. nothing might sppear to the eyes of the world, neverthelefs his face appeared very red ; and this was the realon, it is faid, the Empre(s was not fufiered to fee him. It is faid that this black fellow now keeps an equi- page, lives high, and has mesny ecquaintance of the betzer fort, The expence of candle light being {o much ed- vanced, is in gengral charged to the monopoliz:rs of tallow, who take what price they plesfe for it, which obliges the tallow chandlers to fcll at the prefent high price. The Queen has ordered 5ol to be diftributed among the poor st Windfer. Noiwithtanding the crime for which John Kello, is now under fenience of death in Newgate, is of (o public & nature, end (o very burtful to the community yec greatinteret is meking to fave his life, onm e count of the unmatural evidence againt him,
