Biigeniine Year 1762 Perbaps the following general dccount of the Kiggdom of SPAIN, may be acceptable to Jome of our Readers at this Time : . extralled from a laie Writer. S the Kingdom of Spain is little known 3 many are too aptto con- clude, that there is little in it worth knowisg : Whereas rrothing is more certain, than that there is no Country in Europe (except Greece and Iraly ) that a- bounds fo much in Curiofities, both ot Art and Nature. Spain is notonly the greateft Repofitory of fine Paintings ; but the Face of the Country itfelf is rich, beautiful, and pit- torefque beyond Imagination. It 1s refpectable, in the greatNumber of its Antient and Capital Cities: And it 1is venerable, in the many noble Remains of Roman, Gotbic, and Moorifh Grandeur. This Kingdom is diverfified by many Jong Chains of Mountains, which produce numberlefs Fountains and Rivers, and the fineft Vales in the Werld. The Sky is fo fcrene, and the Air fodry and wholefome, that, in the Southerp Provinces, they eu- joy it by Night with no lefs Safety than by Pay. In a word, it is a Country that pro- duces every thing, in the greateft Perfetti- on, that is neceflury for Ufe, or requifite for Delight. And as to the Natives 3 the Men have been always remarkable for their Valour, their Honour, their Genigs, and their Judgment.. They are grave, tempe- rate, and fober 3 firm and warm in thewr Friendfhips, tho’ cautious and fow in con- tracting them., They have fuch aRegard s Foreign and Domeflick. o "r\Vz'z'x"shncc this Parex b { Was firft Publifh’d, to the Purity of their Blood, and the Fo- nour of their Family, that no Injury is fo highly refented as the leaft Attempt to cor- rupt or ftain it. No People ever furpaffed them in Fortitude and Patience in Difiefs, - or in Courage to furmount the greateft ;h ficulties. ’ = Nor are their Women lefs diftinguifh. able for their Vivacity and Politenefs, thei Beauty and their Wit 5 which renders them fo charming and amiable, that the Paffion of the Spaniard s little lefs than Adoration. And as thereis no Danger which he will not encounter, to procure an Interview with his Miltrefe; fo chere is none to which the Lady is not as ready to be expofed, in | order to receive her Lover. And whea they have mutually pledged their Faith, there is nothing which they will not fuffer, rather than violate it. Such is their Senfe of Honour, that there is fomething heroic S even in their Gallantry. As the Character of the Spaniard differy \ much from that of other Nations mang, of their Cuftoms, and Entertainments alfo,; are peculiar to themfelves, GAZETTE § The Spaniards kave a particular®evori- \J on for the Bleflcd Virgin ; and make a great Number ot Proceffions : but the moft. 3 remarkable are, that of Good Friday, and that of che Holy Sacrament. As Good Friday is kept holy in Comms - moration of the moft affeting Scene pof- &, fible, the Feaft is celebrated with« fuirablé\;\s«\3 Solemnity : The King with all hil@#Courr, and all the Communities both Ecclefiaftic and Civil, make a Bart of the Ceremony> 3 All the Banners of the Religious Orders,’ and of the feveral Parithes, are covered with Crape. The Arms of the King’s Guardsare _ covered withMourning ; and theTrumpets, Kettle drums, and other Inftruments, found a dead March : All the Gentlemen walk with A Y theirSwords by their Sides, and a lighted WaxTaperin their Hands, However, the Ladies upon that Occafion appear in their Balconies, and at their Windows, drefied as gay and fumptuoufly as pofiible : And ° their Gallants lay hold on this Occafion to difcipline themfclves before them, to thew them how ready they would be to fuffer ] any Terment for their fakes ; a Sacrifice which generally makes fome Impreffion,g even upon the hardeft Hearts. The Perfons of thefe Difciplinants are § concealed by a Linen Cap, which covers their Faces 3 and a Linen Robe, which ¢ hangs down to thejr Feer. Thefe are alfo diftinguifhed by Ribbands of the Colour that is moft agreeable to their Ladies. And | this is pracifed in other Cities, as wel in Madrid : For, in' Seville, you may Seven or Eight hundred in a Day. The Proceflion alfo of the Holy Sacra- meot is as folemn, and as pompoully ag- tended 5 and the Ladies, the Tapeftries, thg Canopies, and Carpets at their Balconies, 2§ rich and fine as they were in the form# Proceffion. » The Ladies have Bafkets.of Flowets, and "a Provifion of fweer Waters, which they throw upon thofe whom they havi a mind - ago.difiin%;i@',,gs_ they pafs,
