T e { SB35 eE s - Containing XBRE y:,"’“‘f"’ 4§ PORT S M O B T:H Extraft of a Letter from a Gentleman who lives at Taunton, to his Friend in this Town ; dated April 28. 1762. Ry BOUT 10 Days after the fatal Cataftrophe, which was mention'd in the public:Papers, [ vifited the Well, where the Damp had doae fo much Mifchief, and found the Effeéts of it lefs {udden than what was obferv’d fome Days before. Inorderto fce whether the Air was much rarefy’d, I let fall at the fame Init. of Time into the Well, a Stone and & Feather ; the Feather was a3 much refifted, es near as I could judge,es it would hsve bren jashe.open Air; from whence I conciuded that the Difficalty of breathing in the Well, did not proceed from ¢ Rarefalion of Air; Soon after this the noxious Qua- lity of the' Well ceas’d, and it became as triendly to enimal Life as any other Place. I then endeavcured to find a Fiffure in the Rock on which the Fire was made, thyo’ which Vapours might arife, but could difcover norme, from which and feveral other Things I forbear to mention, it feems pizin (0 me, that the Fire wholly chang'd the. Nature of the Air to quite a different Fluid, uafit for Refpiration ; sad that a like Effe@® would follow from any aduit o buret Air. : From this, I think a very good Argument may be drawn againff making Fires in any Place, where there ¢an't be a Succeffion of Air,as iz Wells, clofe Rooms, ¢, fince the Confeguence muff meceffarily be fatal to animal Life. Pordmouth, July 6. 1762. &7’ Tis hereby firongly recommended to the Con- fideration of Town and Country, whether it would not be for the Good of the Publick in this diffrefing Drought, that they fhould ufe chicfly or wholly Freth Meat, sad fave their Salt Pork, And if Far- mers would agree one to kill a Beef this Week, and snother next, and fo on, for the fupply of their Neigh- €8 " bourhood until Beef can be falted, it might in fome Degree prévent a Famine. Allo, if fword Ground or Stubble were to be plowed snd fowed with Indian Corn, Os's, Barley, or Turnips, they would all ferve for Fodder next Winter, sad Grain pinched with the Brought and worth little for other ule, might snfwer to fow. We can't expe the Cale would be much altered with Regard to Hay if there fhonld be Pienty ot Rainfrom this Time.
