From the LONDON GAZRTTE! WHriTenALL, April 2. 1762. Yefterday morning Capt. Ricaut, aid de-cemp (0 Mijor General Monckion, arrived here with the icl- lowing letter to the Earl of Egremont, one of his Majefty’s principal Secretarics of.State, dated 8¢, Peter's Ifland Martinico, Feb. 27, 1762, My Lozrp, HAD the honor of writing to your Lordfhip the I oth inftant from Fort Royal, which went by my aid de camp Major Gates, who failed from hence in his Majefty’s thip Nightinigale the 1oth inft. @ duplicate of that letter I now inclofe. Juft when I was about to embark for the reduc- tion of St. Peter's, two deputies arrived at Fort- Royal, on the 12th inft: offering terms of capitulation, for the whole ifland, on the part of M. Le Vaflor De la Touche, the Governor General. received the Admiral’s and my anfWersto their pro- pofals, which they carried to St. Peter’s; and onthe 14th they retusnéd with the Capitulation figned. In confequence of which, I left Fort Royal the 15th, with the grenadiers of the army, and the 2d brigade, and on the following day took pofleflion of this large and oppuleit town, with all the pofts in the neigh- bourhood. The enemy marched out about 320 gre- nediers, who are embarked, and will {ail ifimeadiate- ly for France. M. Le Vaflor De la Touche, the Governor Genersl, M. Rouille, Lieutenant Gover- nor, end the Staff will flortly follow. Inclofed T fend your Lordfhip a copy of the ¢a- pitulation for the Ifland, which we humbly hope will meet with his Majefty’s gracious approbatign. Com. Swinton is now off the Grenades, with 2 fquadron of men of war ; and I purpofe fending immediately Brig. Gent. Walch, with the 'sth brigade, and the corps of light infantry under Col. Scott, in order to reduce that ifland. I Ifave'undoubted intelligence that the number of white men in the Granades™ does not exceed 500; and in the other iflands not quite fo many: ; I fhould have proceeded tpon this fervice mylelf, had I not thought it of more confequence for his Ma- jefty’s fervice, my remaining here’ at this critical “time, when by what we can learn, 2 rupture with Spaiz mey be daily expeted ; and here I am slfo at Land to fettle many material affairs relative tothe fe- curity of this conqueft. Indeed I have good reafon to believe, that Brigadier Walch will meet with very little obitru&ion in his operations. However, fhould he not immedistely fucceed, I fhall move that way with & larger force, snd mske no doubt to compel them to & fpeedy fur- render. It was not my intention to have fent home an ex- prefs until T conld havé informed your Lordfhip of she reduftion of the other illands mentioned in his Majefty’s inftructions : But as this ifland is now com- pleatly reduced to his Majefty’s obedience, a delay, in fignifying this interefting event, might be attended with fome bed confequence at this critical junéture. 1 therefore fend this by my sid de csmp, Capt. Ri- caut, who can inform your Lordfhip of any particular you may defire to know ; and [ beg lesve to recom- mend him to your Lordfhip’s countenance, as a very deferving and gaod officer. It was neceffary for his Majefty’s fervice, immedi- ately to fill fome civil employments here, [ have ac- cordingly sppointed proper perfons to act usiil his Majefty’s pleslure be known. Your Lordfhip has here with a return of the artillery and warlike flores found in the town, the reduit, aad the other different pofts. 7 bave the bonor to be, &c. ROBERT MONCKTON. Dirby, acquainting their Lordfhips with the fur render of Fort Royal, and the cepitulation of the greatelt part of the inhabitants, Ihave the additional pleafure to congratulate their Lordfhips on the con queft ofthe whole Ifland of Martinico; M. dels T'ouche having thought proper to fend his brother on board the Marlborough, with articles of capitula- tion, juflt in time to fave the town from deftrution ; g copy of which capitulation I have the honor to inclofe. As this ifland is now entirely fubjected to his Ma- jefty’s obedience, I can only repeat, in this public manner, my entive approbation of the conduct of ail the officers and [esmen of that part of his Majefty’s fleet which I have the bhonor to command, all having exerted themfelves in their proper ftaticns, with an ardor and refolution becoming Britifh feamen.
