WNature (to her misfortane ) had eminently endowed her with -amiable gualities of mind and beanty of perfon fufficient to-emgage the attention of every one who {aw her, and the affeftions of every one who knew her. Mr. M’'Knaton;of an ancient family in the neigh- bourhood, and fortune nat inconfiderable in that coun- try, conceived apafion for her, that nothing, as ap: payned in the évent, 4it death or poffefion could fatisfy. Tha® his fortdne was not equal to what the lady mighe have expeited from her own merit, as well is' from her father’s circumftances,yét Mq. Knaten’s application to have her in marriage, had probably beéen well re- ccived, but for ‘his incusable attachment to exceflive gaming ¢ which might quiekly have diffipated ( or re- duced her to want ) her prefent large fortune, as well as a much larger in contingercy. Mr. Knox, other- wife, might havé teen prevailed on to confent, as the young gentleman ( this faral paffion for play excepted ) was then, tho’ very bad fiice not only without objellion, - but more than ordinarily agreeable to his acquaintance, of every rank and coadition : But that objection juftly weighed more in the fcale of prudence, thao all bis good gualities could ballance, if indeed_any good qualities can avail, where that paflion is perdominant. His propofal was ablolutely reje€ted, and on his . continaing to addrefls her all intercourfe with the family was forbidden him. | e sl 3 He did pot, however ceale to purfue the young lady’s affe&tion:, but ufed evéry art to have accefs to her, un- oblerved by the family, that the ardency. of his paflion ‘could, fuggelt - At every rendezvous for fummer a. mufement, he was ever near her in difguiles, and, in Dublin, found means to fee her with lefi difficalty, till he. had: fa far pained cn her affedlions, thac fhe con- ‘trafted herfelf w0.him, in the prefence of ore wuiriefs only, or rather married him ; for they dach re.zid Uiy 2h form of matriminy and fizoed interchangeable dup licates to witnefs it ; their deffgn Was in appearance, to ‘conceal theie eopagement 6t a time of reconcile ment with her father, thould offer, or his deceafe lezve at 1iberty ta avow the choice fhe had mizde. = - . But the yaung gedtiéman'sjoy avas 7 full to Be con- fioed’; hie ennid not €onceal it from His'more intimate # quaintaness, and the féctet was fo0n divu'ged.
