At the Provincial Court held here laft week, William Rodwell, for killing Jonas Dawfon in a fray, was tried, found guilty of manflaughter, and burat in the hand with the letter M. It appear’d on the trial, that L G. the conftable, was at the fray, who told them Nof to Jwear ; but they might fight and be d mrd. Hsd this confcientious conflervator of the peace, but done his duty, he might poflibly have [av’d the li'e of 2 good fubject, and prevented & poor woman and § children from fuffering extreme want. At the fame court John Harrifon, aliss Stewart, was found guilty of horfe ftealing, and fentenced, Death. Monday laft as the fhip Betfey, Capt. Strachan, was going down South River, fhe touch’d the ground, and five hands in the boat went to carry out anm anchor ; but.having put a coil or two too much of the cable in, at a few yards diftance drom the thip, her ftern funk, and fhe fell bottom upwards upon the people, by which aecident two of them, Willizm Cunningham, and one Jotinfon, a foreigner, were unhappily drowned. Laft week an unhappy #ffair happened in Cecil- County ; two men,whole names were Caffon and Dixon, preténded to enlift George Lafbly, in order to frighten him, and he being but very weak in his intelieéls, was much sffrighted, and ran from them, and at length run into-Sulquehanna river beyond his depth, end was [wim- ming abour, when Dixon flung a fone which ftruck him on the file of his head, and he funk and was drowned. Caflon is ablconded, but Dixon is in prifon.
