Extraf? of a Letter from an Officer ox board the Prince Man of War,@me of Admiral Broderick's Fleet, to bis Friend in this Town, dated Cadiz Bay, Dec.23.1759. ¢ By thefe lines you will find the fad misfortune that has happened to our Flcet: On thegigth Inftant we had a very hard Gale of Wind at S. Wi and be- ing likely to continue we having found by our Reck- oning to be nigh the Shore, from which we could not poflibly clawoff, by ieafon of a prodigious Sea, put us in terrible apprehenfion for our Fate. About 4 0’Clock the nex: Day it cleared away a little, and the Man at Maft Head difcovered the T'own of Ca- diz, which we immediately bore away for before Dark ; but it being too thickand hazey as Night came on, we were obliged to come too at the mouth of the Bay, opento the Sea : —We immediately ftruck our Yards and Topmafts as did the whole Fleet ; Be- tween twelve and one next Morning the Storm en- creafed, and a terrible Sea, which broke our Tiller, and fhiver’d our Rudder in fuch a manner that we expelted every moment it would fall from the Stern Poft.—T'ne Newark of 80 Guns being a bad Shipto ride at Anchor in a Gale of Wind, parted all her Ca bles but one, and cut away her Mainmaft : —The Culloden of 74 Guns was obliged to cut away her Main and Mizen Maft :....The Jerfey of 60 Guns fprung her Main Maft. About 4 0’Clcck the next Day after we anchored, the Wind came more to the Northward, when the whole Squadron cut their Cables and made the beft of their Way to Cadiz Harbour. : The Spaniards immediately came to our Afliftance, and behaved exceeding kind, and ftill continue fo, which gauls the French prodigioufly, there being five Sail of the Line and three Frigates in the Har- bour.---We now, (blefled be God) have got in fafe. We have heard of feveral Ships being on Shore, among which are feveral Englifhmen by their Papers, there not beinga foul faved. Our Admiral is determined to go out and fee the French, notwith- ftanding three of ourlargeft Shipsare fo difabled. — Three Days ago the Jerley of 5o Guns join’d us, and now [ think we are able to cop: with our French Neighbours. They made an Attempt this Morning to put out, but the Wind came too far to the Weit- ward. Our Admiral has hoifted his Flag on board the Corqueror of 70 Guns : There is the St. Albans of 60 Guns, the Jerfey of 60, the Guernfey of 50, the Thetis of 40, the Rainbow of 40, the Lyme of 28, and the Sheernefs of 24, all ready to put to Sea. ofp o ofe oo o <l efo ofo oo ¢ o ofo ofe oo oo o o oo o ol The following Lines have been fluck up in feveral : Parts of Paris.
