R°HILADELPHIA,]Jdys. From St. Chritophers we learn, that M. Bompar is ailed from Martineco, with about 12 Sail of Men of War, but where he is gone uncertain ; fome thick to the Cape, others for Quebeck. Lxtralt of a Letter frem Pitifburg. Jume 19, 1759. ““ Une Hundred and Sixty four Warriors, of the 5ix INations, Delawares, Shawanefle, and Ottawas, came here and met in Council. They feem to be friendly difpofed towards us, and fay, they were fent by the Heads of their feveral Nations, to know how they would be received, and to carry back any Meflages that might be fent by them.—'1'he Beaver, a principal Man of the Delawares, is now on his Way to this place with f[ome of the Heads of the Owendots, Twigtwees, Ottowns, and fome others from or near Fort Detroit, and may be expetted in a few Days. The Indians here have fent Meflages‘ta the fndians at Venango, to withdraw from the French, which I hope will have a good Effe&t.” NE W.Y ORK, Julyo, Satorday laft arrived here Capt. Stewartin 7 Weeks from Briftol, and informs that juft before he came a- way he faw an Account, publithed in the St. James’s Evening Poft, advifing, that the Lords of Appeal had given a fical Anfwer to the two Deputies from the States of Holland, in regard to the Datch Ships de- a2in’d in Englifh Ports ; and that they had return'd to Holland with faid Anfwer ; which was to the follow- ing Import, that they mult fi:t prove their Property, before their Veflels could be reftored ; and that if their ferding a Convoy with their Merchanimen was only to protett them from being infalted by Englith Privateers they would fend a fuflicient Number of Englith Men of War to convoy and proteét them from any infalts they might receive— Various are the conjeltures as to the Confequence of this Anfwer ; but moft are of opinion that it will occafion a Rupture between England and Holland .— T ue{day lalt-arrived here from Philadelphia, 140 Highlanders belonging to Col. Montgomery’s Regi- ment: They were ftationed at Pittfburg 1lalt Winter, and are goneto join their Regiment. On Wedneflday laft arrived here Capt. Glafs, with 14 other Englith Veflels, were at Gambia, but that the Crew of the Depfley were all dead. ' By Capt. Stewart from Briftol, we learn, that it was tho’t by the moft judicious People there, that a Datch War was inevitable ; and that a greater Prefs was ne- ver known in England, and that 1000 Seamen were demarded from the Town of Glafgow alone. They both were haul'd cut dead, witha Hook. The Well is but 14 Feet deep, and there were but 23 Inches of Water in itat the Time. One of the Coroner’s Inqueft was let down about ten Feet, with a Rope : He was taken with a trembling in his Knees, a Pain acrofs his Breaft, and very faintifh ; and being immediately drawn up, faid that if he had remained a little while longer, he muft have died. Two Cats were alfo put into the fame Well, which died immediately. NEW.LONDON, June 6. Our laft Advices from the Weftward, bro’t by the Courier from Albany laft Saturday, are,—That on the 2d Inftant, 16 of the Jerfey Blues were fent without the Camp at Lake George to gather a little Bruth for the General’s Baker, but were not gone an Hour before they were furprized in Sight of the Camp by a Party of the Enemy, confifting of about 240, who killed and fcalped 6, wounded z, took 4 Prifoners, and oniy 4 of the whole Party efcaped. The Enemy fhewed them- felves plainly to the whole Army after they got the Scalps, gave a Hollow, and then made off to their Bat- toes, which were not more than 2 Miles from the Head of the Lake. A large Party was ordered out alter them but in vain. They butchered our People in a molt fhocking Manner,by cutting Pieces of Fleth out of their Necks, Thighs and Legs.—That two Englith Prifoners, who had been but 16 or 17 Days from Ofwegatchy, from whence they ran away, at length got in, but knew not where they were till they heard the Englifh Drums at the four Mile Fort ; and they were almoft dead with Hanger : They fay, that the French have no Expedition going forward towards Ofwego, or any where that Way ; and that they are in .great Confter- nation, as they have heard the Englifh Fleet was ar- rived at Quebeck.—That there is an Account of four or five People being kill’'d and fcalp’d by the Indians on the Mohawk River.—That three Regiments were to fet forward about 10 Miles up the Lake, on the 8th Inftant, in order to take Pofleffion of an Ifland called Sabbath-Day Foint, which ’tis faid will be of fome Con- fequence ; and that the whole Body of the Army were to follow in 3 or 4 Days at farthet :—That it is tho’t that about the Middle of lat Week, Carillon was in- vefted by our Troops : So that it is'to be hoped, that good Tidings may e’er long come from that Quarter ; as People may reft eafy to truft the Condutt of this Affair {under God) with General AMHERST, who underftands his Bufinefs well.
