A remarkable ComeT, fuppofed to be the {ame that has been fo much talked of and locked for throughout the laft Year, and by fome in 1757 bas made its Appearance, and been obferved by many People, in &ll Parts of the Province wiihin thefe 10 Days, March 28. On Wednefday the Detachment from tbe South Carolina Regiment, marched for the Country of the Cherokee Indians. A Letter from Keowee, in the lower Cherokees dated the 13th inft received on Wednelday Afterncon, mentions the Little Carpeunter’s being on his Way to Charleftown, where we may expeétto fee him very foon. This is the firft Account we have had of this Warrior fince his Difmiffion by Gen. Forbes, 31. Leiters from Savannah, dated the 24th Inft. mention, that they had then no lefs than 8o Creek Icdians there, among them fome of the principal Men, fuch as the Hitcheta King, &c. That their Bu- finels was only to vifit Governor Ellis, to repeat their friendly Talks, and receive Prefents : That their Difpofitions were perfe&tly good : And that on the 23d, by the Governor’s Defire, they entértained the Town with the Indian Ball Play, the Men exhibiting in the Morning, and the Women in the Afternoon ; after which they received their Prefents, and were in high good Humour, - PR TEADEHY R IR 9. On Satarday laft Capt. Chancellor arrived here ¢ from Madeira, in Six Weeks Paflage ; and advifes of the Arrival there of Captain Lewis of New York, wha, on the Tenth of February, was brought to by Commodore Keppel, zo Leagues to the Weltward of Madeira, with three Sail of the Line, hemeward bound from Goree. A Letter from Jamaica, dated the 26th of Febru- ary, fays, ¢ The Merchaats there were told by Ad- miral Coates, that he had certain Advice ofa French 64 Gun Ship and a Frigate, being failed, or would be foonready to fail, to cruize on this Coaft.” It is alfo (aid three French Privateers are cruizing on the Eaft End of that l1fland. That Captain Clark, in a Snow from New England, was taken five Leagues off of Port Royal, and a Ship off Port Morant, was allo taken. ! Captain Gregory, from Barbados, informs us, That a Fleet of above 40 Sail of Merchantmen, had arrived there from England, moft of them for Anti- gua, (among which are four Ships with Troops on board) under Convoy of his Majefty’s Ship the E- merald : That in going down to Antigua, a French Privateer Slaop got in among the Fleet, on which the Emerald, immediately purfued her, and no doubt was made of her being taken in a fhort Time, the King's Ship going very faft, Capt. We can with Pleafure inform the Public, That the New York Regiment is by - voluntary Inliftment compleated to 2500 Men ;.and as.a remarkable Spi- rit for the Service prevails, there is not the leaft Doubt but in a few ' Days we fhall be entirely com- pleated to 2680 Men, the full Eftabliiment of this Colany. "By Captain Gardner, who arrived at Philadelphia on Sunday the 15th Inflant, in 16 Days from Anti- gua, we have Advice of the following Fleet of French Men of War being arrived at Martinico from Breft, under the Command of M. By Capt. Gardner we are further informed, that the Troops o Guadatedp#wete faid to be bhealthy, and had the Enemy betwixt two Fires: That three Sloops, with about 400 Volunteers, had failed from Antigua to ' their Afliftance, under Convoy of the Privateer Sturdy Begpar, Capt. Troup, of this Port: That feveral Gentlemen, at St. Chriftophers, were putting themfelves at the Head of their Negraes, in order to go and join His Majefty’s Forces ; and it was expected their Example would be followed by the other Iflands ; a noble Spirit in general prevail- ing towards reducing the French on Guadaloupe, (which, it was believed, muft {oon. {urrender) and elfewhere : That Cominodore Moore, with the Fleet was going to Martinico, to'endeavour to draw out the French Fleet to an Engagement ; and if he could not dothat, it was thought he would attempt to de- ftroy the Fort St. Pierres : “And that Captain M’- Pherfon, in the Britannia Privateer of Philadelphia, had been at St. Vincents, to cut out fome Veflels ly- ing there, under the Guns of the Fort ; but, after an obftinate Firing on both Sides, was obliged to leave them, having two of his Hands killed, and eight or nine wounded. Tuefday laft the Lion Tranfport, Capt. Smith, ar- ved here from England : She failed from Portfmout} the 14th of February, under Convoy of Commodote Holmes, but on the zsth following, in Lat. 41. Long. 15, the whole Fleet was feparated in a violent Gale of Wind, which continued till the 27th, when . Captain Smith joined about 30 Sail of ‘the Fleet a- gain ; among(t which was the Admiral in the Somer- {et'of 70 Guns, having loft his Mizen Top Maft ; the Northumberland Lord Colvil, loft her Main- Maft, Mizen-Maft, and Fore Top Maft ; the Sea- horfe loft her Main- Malt, and Mizan Top Matft; a Tranfport loft her Main and Fore Mafts ; and the Crown, another Tranfport, was oblig’d to flave the flat-bottom’d Boat that was on her Deck. Many more of the Ships received confiderable Damage ; but as Capt. Smith loft none of his Mats, he proceed- ed on his Voyage, and when he lefc the Fleet, he could perceive they were fteering to the Southward, and as he imagin’d were bound to Gibraltar, to re- pair the Damages they received. Next Day arrived at Sandy Hook, and are fince come into Port, the following Tranfport Ships, allo Part of Commodore Holmes’s Squadron, viz. The Prince of Wales, George Pots Mafler; the Eadon and Mary, Benjamin Longdel Malter ; the James and Henrietta, John Meeke Mafter ; the Three Sifters, Samuel Millener Mafter; the Jane, John Garrit Malter; the Two Brothers, Scarf Stockton Mafter ; and the Hopewell, George Mafterman Mafter. None of the above Ships received any Da- mage worth Notice, in the Storm that feparated the Fleet. That Commodore Moore in- tended, as foon as he got properly watered at Do- minica, to go with half of his Fleet off of Martinico, and fend in a Challenge to M. Bompar, to come out and fight him. A Letter from Lake George, fays, That as Major .Rogers was going wih a Party of 72 Men to Wood- Creck on the 11th Inft. at half an Hour afier Four in the Afternoon he difcovered a Party of about 130 French and Indians, who gave him the fitft Fire, kill- ed 2 and wounded 4 of his Party, and then fled; Major Rogers purfued them clofely, and in the Pur- fuit took 7 Prifoners and 4 Scalps.—He continued his March till the 13th, when he found a French Nums. 133, GAZETTE Loreign and Domeflick. Indian belonging to the above mentioned Party fhot through the Thigh, which difabled him : And ke, with the reft of the French Prifoners, fay, That the Army at Ticonderoga are in very great Want of Provifions ; each Man’s Allowance being but a quart- er of a Pound of Meat, and a Bifket and a half per Day.—The French Prifoners furcher fay, That on the firft of this Inftant, April, as a Party of the French Regulars were deferting to vs, they were met and taken by a Party of French Indians 3 aud after be- ing carried back, were all hanged. Ed- ward that another was carried off Prifoner. ' Laft Night a Gentleman arrived here from Fort> Stanwix ; where, all was well: On his Way down he met Sir William Johnfon, who was treating with a great Number of Indians of different Nations ; that he had made feveral Speeches to them, wherein he {poke his Mind very freely ; that the Indians afked Sir William,why he did not vifit them at their Caftles fo often as formerly. To which he anfwered, That the Blood of feveral of his Brethren that had been lately fcalped lay in his Way, fo that he could not vifit them with Safety ; but that as foon as they would replace thofe Scalps by as many of the Evemy, he would vifit them as much as ever he did.
