R PR S i s s s e, e oS ol B s e (e ] LETRT MET] L O"“N""DO " 'N. May 13. A Letter from Bremen, dated the 6th of May, juft as the Poft left that City, aflerts, That an Exprefs was arrived from his Pruffian Majefty’s Army, which he left at his Departure, within four German Miles of Vienna. If one may credit fome private letters from Dant- zick, dated April 26, the Roflian troops are making lines at no great diftance from that City, and amafling great quantities of provifion' and forage, as if they intended to remain in that neighbourhood, like an army of obfervation, rather than one defigred to aét on the offenfive. This Day Col. Elliot will fet out for the Ifle of Wight : Lord G. Sackvilie fets out on Tuefday ; and the Duke of Marlborough, and General Elliot, will fet out the latter'end of next week. General Waldegrave is already with the Army. We hear that a right hon. commoner has lately declin’d the peerage, with a view of forwarding the reat works he hath begun, I¢ is faid, that by a fecret article in the late treaty with Pruffia, that prince is bound to maintain an ar- my of 30,000 men, to a&t againft France direltly, wherever his Britannick Majefty pleafes. The Heflian minifter has lately prefented a me- morial to the Imperial diet in Ratifbon, conceived in very firong terms. He complains that his mafter’s fubje@s have been plundered of many millions of florins ; that {everal villages are utterly ruined and depopulated ; that the French general Vauban, had fhut up a Proteftant Church at Marpurph, and has dire®ed a Popith chapel to be built ; and that he fpoke publickly in the following contemptuous man- ner, of the Landgrave, viz. That he was a rebel to the empire and its chief ; and a vagabond, whofe re- turn to his own country, depended on the clemency of his moft chriftian majefty. Letters from Gibraltar, of the 1gth of laft Month, fay, that our fquadron in the ftraits, and the garrifon of that fortrefs, were fickly, for want of frefh provi- fions, which came very fparingly from the Barbary coaft ; and the Spaniards, it feems, refafe to fupply them. By the{ame letters we are informed, that M. de la Clue’s fquadron wa. to put to fea from Cartha- gena the 12th of April, if the Wind proved favour- able. We hear that the tranfports will be all ready to take the troops on board next week. 5 12% i LIST of the Numbers that came up Prizes in tbe NEWBURY LOTTERY, Several {loops are fitting at Port(mouth, as fire- According to fome advices from Paris, the dukes and peers “of-France are highly diffati-fied with the unlimitted authority with which M. Belleifle is in- _ vefted, with regard to the affairs of war, in which his fignature is equivalent to the king’s. ‘They were even on the point of remonftrating on this head 3 but it was hinted to them, that their reprefentations would produce no effet; feeing the reigns of Henry 1V. and Lewis XI1I. furnifhed examples of an aa- thority lodged in one perfon, equal to mar(hal Belleifle. Our other papers from France fay, that the im- menfe charges of the war, infenfibly exhauft the king - dom, and greatly embarrafs the miniftry, as the fup- plies are fcanty, and it is almolt impoffible to impofe new taxes. The finances have prefented feveral fchemes to M. Belleifle, which have been feveral times examined in council, but none of them ap- proved. However, as the wants of the flates are very prefling, it is reported that fifty fub farmers will be reftored in thofe branches which require the great- eft detail. This re eftablifthment would produce a fund of twenty five millions ; for according to the plan, each farmer is to pay 500,000 livres for his place. The farmers- general, whofe intereft it is to get this plan fet afide, have fent a deputation to the comptroller-general of the finances, to reprefent its inconveniences : fo that it is ftill uncertain whethee it will take place. It is tho't that prince Ferdinand will march with a largeé body of forces from the county of Marck, by the Wefterwald, to the Rhine, where he will ftill find fubfiftance for his army, and intercept the com- munication of the French, who are taking fcarce any fteps to defeat the defigns of their enemies.
