Cole of Marblehead, arriv’d there from the Banks ; which Veflel, with a Schooner belonging to Mr. Samuel Selman, having put in at the Ifle ot 5a- ble about a Week before to get Wood, were taken by a Number of Men, which belong’d to a French PrivateerSloop that had been caft away on thatlfland : The Jaft mention’d Schooner they kept Poffeffion of ; and in the other fent all the Men home. Laft Monday Capt. Beard, in a Sloop, bound from Nantacket to New- York, was caft away on Rhode- Ifland Beach, in a Storm ; theVeflel ftove to pieces, and notwithftanding he had a Number of Volunteer Rangers on board, no Lives were loft : In Company with him was a {loop of his, which by cutting away her Maf, rid it out without receiving any other Da- ‘mage, Capt. A Letter from a Gentleman in the Weflt Indies, fays, That on the z4th of February lafta terrible Fire broke out at Bridgetown in Barbados, which foon confumed upwards of One Hundred fine Dwel- ling Houfes ; and that four or five Negroes loft their Lives by the blowing up {ome Houfes, in order to fop the Progrefs of the Flames. Laft Friday Morning between 12 and 1 0’Clock, a Fire broke out in a Houfe at the foutherly Part of this Town, belonging to one Saunders, which en- tirely confumed-the fame ; and what is fLill fhock- ing, a Man and his Wife, named Grelia, were burnt to death in the Flames. Hallowell in the Province Ship of War, in his prefent Cruize met with a Pifcataqua Veflel which had been in very hard Gales of Wind, and was near foundering, which he convoy’d to Ha- lifax, but before he got into the Harbour difcovered a Sail in the Offing, to which he immediately gave Chace, and continued his Cruize, Capt. Junkins in 4 Days from Halifax, arrived here laft Saturday, and informs, That all the Men of War and Frigates (except the Prince Frederick, which was fitting out with all poffible Dilpatch) are cruifing before Louifbourg, and daily expecling the Arrival of Admiral Bofcawen :—That Capt. Rous in the Sutherland of 5o Guns, and Capt. Boyl in the Bareas of 36 Guns difcover'd a Sail, upon which the Boreas gave Chace, foon came up with and took ; fhe prov'd to be a French Snow from Bourdeaux bound to Louifbourg, and had been out 40 Days : Her Camgo confifts of Flour, Rice and Brandy. Boyl, that the fail a ftern was the French.Privateer that retook him, who dfter manning the Dutchman he went in -purfuit of, and by the help of a Breeze of Wind came up with and took alfo. Some Hours after they dif- cover'd a large Ship, fuppofed to have been of 74 Guns, but now improved as a Storefhip, as our Peo- .ple were informed by one of their Prizes which came from Breft, that fuch a Ship had failed for Louifbourg, and that fhe had 50,0001. Sterling on board for the Ufe of the Garrifon, which Ship Capt. Rous was left in chace of, when the Boreas made the beft of her Way to Halifax with the three prizes.—It was ru- moured that Capt. Rous, in the Sutherland, went to the Mouth of Louifbourg Harbour, hoifted French Colours, and fir'd for a Pilot, when two came out, which he took, and they gave an Account that the fpotted Fever rages violently among the Troops, and that Provifions were fo fcarce, that they had be- gun to kil their Horfes for want thereof :—And that the Prifoners taken on board the Veflel from Breft, reported that a large Fleet of Men of War were to fail for Louifbourg in a few Days after them. It is alfo rumour’d that there' was but 3 Frigates in the Harbour. This Morning returned from her Cruize, the Pro- vince Ship of War King George, Capt. Hallowell. PO'RTSMOUTH. We hear from New-Cattle, about two Miles from this Town, of a melancholy Accident which happen- ed there laft Sabbath Day about 11 o’Clock befoie Noon, at the Houfe of Deacon Jonathan Pierce’s, in which one Jofiah Furnald’s Family lived ; one Per- fon being left at home to take care of the Children, who was obliged to ftep outto a Neighbour’s Houfe a few Minutes ; and while the was gone, the Children got a Canifter of Powder about fix pounds weight, which by Accident was left in that Room, carried it to the Fire, not knowing the confequence of Powder, puta Coal to the fame, which blowing up, damaged the Houfe very much, tore a Clofet in the Room to pieces, and blew one of the Safhes out feveral Rods from the Houfe, burnt one Child of four Years old in-fuch a Manner, that it died in a few Hours; and another Child of feven Years old it burnt in fuch a Manner, that its Life is not expeted. 1t is hoped this (and many of the like Inflances avhich has happened by the Careleffnels of leaving G uns loaded, and Powder in Childrens Way ) avill be [Jufficicnt Warning to Perlons to take Care for 1he future.
