SE— L o N D O N. Nowember 5. We hear that a Battalion of nine Companies, of 100 Men each, is to be raifed,which are to be commanded by Capt. Draper, of the Foot-Guards, who is appointed Colonel. It is faid tIhTit' they are defigned to reinforce our Troops at Bengal in the Eaft- ndies. Now. 12. Thurfday Morning an Exprefls arrived from Falmouth, with Advice, that the Defiance Privateer, lately commanded by Capt. Dyer, but now by his Firft Lieutenant, had taken and brought in there, after an obftinate Engagement, a French Privateer calied the Provoft of Paris, of 24 Nine-Pounders and 325 Men. The Defiance had 11 Men killed, and 21 wounded : The Frenchman had 70 Men killed and wounded. This is the 22d Prize taken by the Defiance this War, 4 of which are Privateers. The Mattadere, Champhin, from Amfterdam to New-York, is taken and carried imto Norway. Laft Tuefday began, at the Judge Advocate General’s in Privy- Garden, the Enquiry into the Condu& of the Officers in the late fecret Expedition, and adjourn’d *uill this Day, when they proceedes on the Enquiry. Captain Stot, in one of his Majefty’s Ships, fpoke with the Hum- ber, from Jamaica, latt Monday fennight, 350 Leagues to the Welt- ward, who had only 14 Ships with her ; among which were the Jamaica Frigate, Reed ; the Sufannah, Danvers ; and the Stafford, Darling ; parted with the Relt in a hard Gale of Wind. He is juft now detached again with a fmall Squadron alotted to his Command, and we hope to fall io with fome of their Cruizers if they dare fir ; as yet they have not ventured, fince our Captain deftroyed the Ship of 30 Guns.” According to private Letters from Berlin, Orders have been fent to Koningfberg, to draw up, with all convenient Difpatch, a dift- in&, exaét, and fatisfatory Account of all the Towns and Viilages that have been burnt and deftroyed by the Ruffians, fupported by the ‘Teftimonies of the Clergy,and other refponfable People, upon Oath, fo as to take away all Poffibility of Doubt, and to render it manifelt to all Europe, that this Interruption was rather made to deftroy and depopulate his Pruffian Majefty’s Dominions, than with a View of delivering Saxony ; which, however, was the fole Caule afigned for that Invafion.
