PORTS MOUT H, Fanuary 13. ‘Captain William Pearne, who arrived at this Place Jaft Monday, via Rhode Ifland, in. 306 Days from Ja- maica, gives an Acctount of his being taken in: the Schooner Charming Betfy of this Porg, in his Paflage to Montferrat, by a large Letter of Mérqae Ship from Cinada, and was carried to Cape-Francois, where he arrived the 19th of September, and was there a clofe Priloner nine Weeks. Capt. Pearne alfo gives the following Account of the /Engagement between the Englith and French Men of War off Cape-Francois, viz. On the 21ft of O&ober the French Commodore, Monfieur Kerfean, at two in the Morning failed from that Port in the Intriped of .| 74 Guns, and goo Men, in Company with the Impo- ater of 64 Guns, and 700 Men, the Greenwich of 56 Guns, and 600 Men, the Sceptre of 40 eighteen Poun- ders, and 450 Men, (fhe having been a 70 Gun Ship) the Leghorn and Savage Frigates of 36 Guns and 300 Men each, and the Lebrune of 18 Guns and 150 Men; thefe were in order to fight with three Englifh Men of War, which had blocked that Port up for two Months, viz. the Augufta of 6o Guns, Commodore Foreft, the Edinburgh of 70 Guns, and the Dreadnought of 60 Guns ; at ten in the Morning the two Squadrons came within three Miles of each other, the Englifh then tack- ed and ftood to the Northward till twelve, then tacked to the Southward till two Afternoon, the French con- tinuing to tack after them till three' Afternoon ; the Englifh being to Windward of the French about two Miles, bore down on them in the following manner, “tiz. the Dreadnought in the Van, the Augufta next, the idinburgh bringing up the Rear ; the French at that Time having drawn their Ships up in a Line, the Eng- lith in bearing down on them received three Broadfides from the French before they thought that they were ‘ near enough to begin the Engagement :— When they came within about Piftol Shot, the Dreadnought drew up abreaft the Intrepid, the Augufta abreat the Sceptre, and the Edinburgh between the Fire of the Greenwich and Impoator, the Frigates laying aftern ; the fecond Broadfide the Auguita fired obliged the Sceptre to quit the Line, the having received a great deal of Damage ; the Greenwich then took her Place, and the Impoator {hot abreaft of the Edinburgh ; at that time the Frigates, intending to double the Line, fhot to Windward of our Ships, but as they pafled them received their Windward Broadfides, which did them fuch Damage that they lay by afterwards without firing a Gun :—At feven After- noon the French Commodore bore away, and made {ail for the Shore, his Sguadron all following him, but the Impoator in making fail carried ber Mzinmaft and Foremaft away about 10 Foot from the Deck, and the Head of her Mizenmatt, being fo difabled by the Edin- burgh's Shot ; the Englith kept under an eafy fail to E'ae Northward all Night, not knowing or thinking they ‘had done the Pyench fo much Damage :—The next Day at 11 0’Clock, the whole French Squadron arrived a¢ Cape Francois in a fhattered Condition, the Impoa- ' kor was towed in without Mafts, the Greenwich with o Shot between Wind and Water, and 8 Feet of (Water in her Hold. The French themfelves acknow- edge that they had 6oo Men killed and wounded in the Engagement, feveral Officers of Note, and their Commodore himfelf wounded in three Places. L Capt.
