% ’ ‘ueerfainment ‘given Tat Monday by a gentleman at “Knightly, in the parifh of Gnofhall, in Staffordthire, 1t Men in that neighbourhood were invited, whofe ages made op 1117 years. . PHILADELPHIA, September 1. Extract of & Letter from London, dated Jume 16, 1757. I believe you will be amazed to hear that the French Privateers have taken upwards of 700 Sail of our Ships, fince the Declaration of War, but we knoéw the Names of that Number already ; and tho’ we had taken 350 Sail of their Ships before the War, we have not taken more than 5o in the whole, to this Day. Out of 25 Sail of Ships that failed laft from Carolina, 22z are taken ; and the whoie Crop of Indigo carried into France ; in Value 150,0001. fterl. which is a cruel Stroke on a young Ma- nufaéture ;—And of the laft 30 Sail of Ships from Ja- maica, 18 are taken, and 6 mifling, which are alfo taken no Doubt. What is more {urprifing is this, that notwith- ftanding we have loft 500 Sail of Ships within 7 Months paft, we have taken go French Privateers, fome of 36 Guns, fuperior to our 20 Gun Men of War. By this, you may be convinced how impofiible it is to cover Trade in Time of War, by any other Way than failing under Convoy ; for the Privateers of France are innumerable, and their amazing Succefs has given them great Spirits ; but it is certain, they have never behaved well in any Engagement. ~ ** We have a fine Profpe& of a plentiful Crop this Year, which will he very acceptable ; for the Diftrefs of the Poor in England, and more particularly in Ireland, has been, and fill is, very great. The King has confent- ed to a Grant of Parliament for a Sum of Money to build < a Fort at Milford Haven for the Defence of that fine Har- bour, and the Trade calling there, and to ftation Convoys to the Britifh Channel ; fo that the Ships coming North about to Ireland, and to Milford, will efcape the French irivateers, and it will now be made a moft ufeful Har- our.” Since our laft feveral Letters have been received in Town from Lancafter County, to the following Purport, viz, That there was nothing. but Murdering and Capti- vating among them, by the Indians ; That on the 17th ult. one Beatty was killed in Paxton : That the next Day .James Mackey was murder’d in Hanover, and William and Jofeph Barnet wounded : That the fame Day were taken Prifoners, a Son of the faid James Mackey, and a Son of Jofeph Barnet ; Elizabeth Dickey, and her Child ; and the Wife of Samuel Young, and his Child : And that 94 Men, Women and Children were feen flying from their Places, in one Rady, and a great many more in fmaller Parties ; fo that it was feared fome Settlements would be intirely forfaken. We hear from Berks County, that feveral Indians have been lately feen near Fort Lebanon ; and that on Sun- day, the z1ft paft, the Houfe and Barn of one Peter Se- -melcke was burnt, and three of his Children carried off, rimfelf and Wife, and another Child, being from Home at that Time. This was done within 2 Miles of faid Fort. NEW-Y O R K, Sptember 3. Laft Wednefday Morning, his Excellency JonaTHAN Beicuer, Efq; Governor of New Jerfey, departed this Life, at Elizabeth Town.
