This Day Samuel Shepard, jan. a young Man being at Work in the Field with his Father and two Brothers, a Shower arofe, he ran to a Tree at a fmall Diftance for Shelter ; when there was a fudden Clap of Thunder preceded by a remarkable Flath of Lightning, which inftantly puta Peripd to his Life, the others coming tothe Tree, found him lefning on a Stump, but Stone dead, his Cloaths rent and burning on his Body, which they ex- tinguithed with Water. An Hole of a confiderable Bignefs was torn thro’ his Hat, where it was fappofed that the Lightning firft ftruck, ran down the Side of his Head, Face andBody,which were barat as it had been with GunPowder. Hartferd June 16. Friday Morning laft arriv’d here Capt. Trefrey in 12 Days from Halifax, and informs, That the Men of War fent to loek into the Harbour of Louifbogrg was return’d, and reported, that they faw 7 Sail ; that they were putting themielves in the beft Pofture of Defence poflible at Hali- fax, expetting a Vifit from the French ; that as he came out the Privateer Huzza Capt. Phips of that Place was go- ing in with a Prize Schooner which he took bound from Louifbourg to Canada. The Privateer Sloop which Capt. Smith faw 1at Wednef- day coming in from the Eaftward, and which he took to be a French Privateer, proves to be the Privateer Sloop Black- Snake, Capt. Tyler of Providence, bound Home from the Weft Indies; but by Reafon of contrary Winds pat into Plymouth. Laft Week came on the Tryal of Capt. Cargill at York, on Account of the Penoblcot Indians, which he killed toge- ther with a Naumber of other Indians, fome-Time fince ; and we hear he was acquitted. We bear that a {mall Schooner belonging to Rhode-Ifland from the Coalt of Guiney, having efcap’d the 4 Men of War cruifing on that Coaft, was afterwards taken by a French Privateer in Sight of one of the Englith Iflands to which the was bound : She had on board 70 Slaves. On Saturday laft died here Mrs. ELizaBeTH STODDARD, Widow of Davip Stopparp, Efqr; deceas’d, in the Seven- ty-Eighth Year of her Age: A Gentlewoman adorned with many valuable Accomplithments. We hear from Biddiford, that on the 23d of June laft, as a Number of Children were playing a little above the Saw- Mills there, ftanding on Saco I7alls, fo called, on the Eaft- ward fide of the River, which Falls are fuppofed to be thirty Foot high ; a Boy of about fix Years old tell into the River and went through the Saw Gate and under the Wheel and over the Falls, and was taken up alive about ten Rods below faid Walls, without any Hurt, except a {mall Piece of Skin beat off of one Heel.
