CaarresToww, Souri-Carovina, Feb. 17. On Saturday Morning, between 2 and 3 o'Clock, went afhore upon Cape Romain, the Snow Peggpy, of and from Glafgow for this Port, Collin Buchannon Matter, with a Cargo ef zooo L. Sterling Value ; but the People, are all fav’d. HE Conferences between his Excellency our Go- vernor and the Cherokees, which began the 31t _ult. ended on Saturday laft ; and on Sunday Morning the Indians fet out for their Conntry, as well fatisfied, gnd with as good a Difpofition, as can be wifhed ; nothing having beén wanting on the Part of this Go- vernment, to 2flure them of the good Opinion and Regard it has for all friendly Indians, nor in Point of Prefents— To communicate to the Publick, all that pafied at thefe Conferences (which are allowed to be as critical and interefting as any that have ever been held here; would at this Time, be both tedious and impolitick ; but, as fome Sufpicions have been en- sertained of the Little Carpenter, which ought to be removed, it may not be improper to obferve, that two of the principal Obje@s he appears to Have had in View, (and which he referved for the laft Gonference, only hinting before, that he had fomething of Confe- quence {till to fay) were, 1ft. The Suppreffion of certain Frauds that have been too frequently committedin the Commerce ufually carried on betwixt us and them : And 2dly. The obtaining a Promife, that he fpall be permitted to embark for England, ahen a Man of War may be ready to [ail, inorder once more to fee the Faiber of bis Pegple, our MOsT Gracious SovEREIGN ; for which he has expreffed a moft ardent Defire ; and on both thefe Heads, the Anfwers made him, were agreeable to his Inclinations. On Sunday laft arrived here Capt. Hill, in aLetter of Marque Ship, from Falmouth and Madeira ; who, in his Paflage, made 4 Prizes, and {ent them into the former Port : One of them was a St. Domingo Ship, and another a Dutchman, laden with Mafts, &c. for fome French 74 Gun Ships. On the 4th ult. in the Night Capt. Hill fell in with 4 Ships, which the next Morning he difcovered to be two French Frigates (of 36 and 24 Guns) with two very large Tranfports, ali full of Soldiers, dud fleerizg for America (moft probab- dy deflincd for the Miflifippi, as#he Navigation of the St. Kaurence, avil/ not be cp&r Jor Jomne Time yet to come) Hz has brought no publick Priuis, but informs us, That 16,000 Tons of Shipping had been taken up by the Government, on board of which 12 Regi- ments at Portfmouth, were certainly to be embarked by the 1oth of January, on fome grand Expedition : ~——That Admiral Knowles was returned, to take upon him theCommand of a Squadron appointed to go with the above Troops : And, that it was thought the Admiral would have the Command of the Expedition. Such a Military Spirit at prefent prevails in this Town, that feveral Parties of Genglemen now affociate and meet two or three Times a Week, to be inftruét- ed by experienced Pérfons, in all the Parts of Military Dilcipline. An Example avorthy of Imitation through- ont the Prowvince, avherever it is praflicable ; and awe bear, it will foon be fit on Foot in feveral Hunting- Clubs iz the Country. It has'been obferved, that the Pruflian Exercife ex- cels all others, in the Quicknefs of their Loading, and well levelling their Malkers, to ‘which is principally afcribed the great Succefs of the Pruflian Armies, who generally make two or three SURE Fires while they receive one from their Enemies. (% A great and fingular Advantage ! and which WE (who are not likely always:to be exempted from an Attack) fthould afliduoufly labour to attain, as our Slownefs in loading, and levelling. our Pieces, have been rémarkable, as fome of our prefent greateft Defecls. s We hear that the [nhabitants of St. Helena Ifland, have petitioned to his Excellency for afufficiéntNum- ber of Cannon, &c. to eret a good Fort there ; offe- ring and engaging to build and defend it themiclves. If the taking the Ifland of St. Bartholomew is of o much Confequence to our, Trade as has been repre- fented, Capt. Cook’s keeping Poffeffion of it, is ex- tremely well judged ; for it feems, it was a Neft for French Privateers, who bhad a Signal- Houfe “there, from whence they could difcern what Veflels were proper for them to attempt, without being under a Neceflity of keeping the Sea, and where they imme- diately returned when they tho't proper. The Inhabitants of William{burg, we’ hear, have alfo offered to build a Fort in that Townfhip, at their own Expence, if theGovernment will allow them Can- non and Stores for its Defence. [With how much more Eafe might the more wealthy Parts of this Province be fortificd, was a Spirit like that of the Williamfburg- ers a little more gemeral.] Laft Sunday arrived here from Providence, Captain Thomas Brown, late Mafter of the Schooner Hazard, of this Port, who was taken on the z5th of June laft, by thres French Men of War, and carried inte Cape Francois, where he was immediately put in Goal, and e gt e T PORTSMOUTH, in NEW-HAMPSHIRE, Printed by Danicl Fovle, Where this Paper may be had at One Dollar per Aunum, confined 7 Months, till a Flag of Truce arrived from Bermuda, which brought him with 8 other Mafters away : Capt. Brown fays, that all Englifh Prifoners were put together without Diftintion, into the fame Room. with Negroes, Felons, &c. at the Cape, and very {curvily treated. -Another Flag of Truce, fent from Providence to Port au Paix, was alfo returned, with 21 Prifoners, amongft which were g Maiters of Veflels, who all underwent the fame Treatment there, as thofe at the Cape. e ian e The Garland Man of War, commanded by Capt. Arbuthnot, én the 1t Inflant, carried into Providence, a Spavifh Ship, which fhe took off Hifpaniola, called, N. 8. del Rofarioty San Francifco Xovier, from Mar- feilles, bound for St. Domingo, with a valuable Car- goe of Dry Goods, all French Prbperty. Capt. Sweeting, in a Privateer belonging to, Rhode- Ifland, called the Black Snake, alfo carried in there, ot the gth, a Dutch Snow called the Vrow Cornelia, Jan Smit, Mafter, from St. Euftatia for St. Domingo, with a French Cargoe. The Peggy, faid in our laft to be athore upon Cape Romain, is fince beat to picces there, and none of her Cargoe faved. The Sloop Hannah, Thomas Francis, Mafter, from Philadelphia, for this Port, is loft upon the Coalt of North Carolina, but great part of her Cargoe fav'd. The Sioop Molly, William Earl, Mafter, from Rhode-Ifland for Jamaica, was lately loft upon the Rocks of Bermuda, but the Mafter and Crew faved. The Prince of Wales, Capt. Fell (which failed from hence in O&ober laft )in her Paffage for Briftol, was taken by a French Privateer and ranfomed. From the Soutn-Carorina GAZETTE. CnarLEsToWN, Feb. 24.
