We haw #Advice from Berks County, that on faturday the 6th Inftant, a Woman and 4 Children were carried off by the Indians near the Allemangle ; that oue Child being in a Turnip Patch, and feeing the Indians run towards the Houfe, made its Efcape ; that another Child, of 6 Weeks old, was left in a Cradle ; and that a Hatchet made in the fhape of a Flower de Luce, was found fticking in the Door of the Houfe. The Man that belonged to the Place hap- . pened to be from Home when the Affair happened. 'T'he Enemy carried off nothing from the Houfe but a Saddle, and a wide Coat. We hear from St. Kitts, that the French for want of fea- faen, have fitted out but few Privateersin the Welt Indies, and thofe met with but little fuccefs ; and that in the late . bad Weather, feveral Vefiels were loft there, at Montferat and other Places ; but no confiderable Damage fuftain’d on the Iflands. Letters from North Carolina advife, that the Affembly of that Province are bringing in another Aid Bill, to keep up their Forces the enfuing Year (which Governor Dobbs bhas very much at Heart) by laying a Tax on the Proceed- ings of the Law, on Deeds, Conveyances, &c.That feveral Families were lately deftroyed on the Hecad of Roanoak, by French Indians. And that the Chaplain, and fome Of. ficers of the Royal American Regiment, were arrived there to raife Recruits, in which the Chaplain particularly met with gbed fuccefs: Several Companies of Battocmen, who went to the Northward early in the {pring, came down fince our laft from Albany, and are gone to their refpective Homes. And other Bodies of the Royal Americans arrived here Yefterday from the fame Place. A French Dogger, valued at about 3000 |. arrived here ~on Thurfday laft, taken and fent in by the Peggy Privateer of this Port, Capt. Hadden, on the 16th of lalt Month, in the Latitude of Bermuda. The fame Day Capt. Bethel arrived here in twenty two- Days from St. Kitts, and informs us, That a Day - or two before he failed, the Privateer Brig Oliver Cromwell of that Place, had brought into that Ifland a large French fhip of twenty two Guos and 100 Men, boucd from Old France for Martineco, which fhe tock after a defperate Engage- ment, to Windward of that [fland. Capt. Sinclair in the fhip Three Brothers, who arrived here the Beginning of laft: Week, left London the latter~ end of {eptember, came down Channel with feveral Vefiels for this Place, viz. Kirkwood in a faow, Cathcart in a thip, - Bethone, Pinkham, and Folger, in Brigs.. While Capt. Sinclair was loading at Neewcaftle the Beginning of ®©¢tober, there was a very violent ftorm of Wind which lafted abouc five Hours, great Damage was done thereby on fhore, by the blowing down feveral Houfes and the Roofs of many others : And in the Harbour corfiderable Damage done to the Shipping ; his Veflel was near Foundering at Aachor, two Keels funk along fide of him; and feveral of the Men therein drowned @ fe is thought a great deal of Damage ° was done by the ftorm in the Channel of England, as the Wind was at about fouth.—Capt. Sinclair had bat fix - Weeks Paflage from Newcaftle, and. 30 Days from the Orkneys, but brought no publick Prints. Capt. Reed from » Newecaftle, on his Paflage hither, met with feveral Pieces’ of Wrecks at Sea, after the above {torm. Tuefday laft a fine Ship about 350 Tons, lately taken from the French off Lou'fbourg, arrived here from Halifax,. to be fitted ‘out for a Privateer. Tis faid fhe belongs to an Off cer in* his Majefty’s Troops at Halifax, and is an ex-- cellent Sailor. Lalt Thur(day came Paffenger in a fithing {chooner from” Halifax, Capt. Sawyer, who was Mafler of a Brigantine belonging to this Piace, bound hither from Lifben, but was. taken the firft Inftant, about 5o Leagues to the Eaftward of Cape Ann, by a French fchooner. Piivateer, and carried into Lovifbourg ; from whence he was releas’d by an Ex- change of Prifoners, and fent to Halifax. We hear that befides the above Brigantine, a Veffel from. Ireland for , a Liverpool Man for Philadelphia, eight other Veflels, befides two New Yorkers bound for the Weft Indies, (notwithftanding their Number of Guarda Coltas) have been lately taken by a {fma'l French .
