MIXUPS FEATURE POLITICAL FIELD Party Lines Ignored in Several Heated Campaigns - Washington, Oct. 21 (A—Political cross currents are forcing a patch- work design in the 1930 congres- sional campaign with both parties | involved in the occasional mixups. In scattered contests over the na- tion, democrats are supporting re- | publicans, republicans campaigning | for democrats, wets supporting drys | in some instances and drys espous- ing campaigns of wef The jumble of party labels is per- haps most noticeable in Pennsyl- ania where some republican leaders liave announced opposition to the re- publican gubernatorial nominee, Gifford Pinchot, while some dry democratic chieftains have deserted their candidate, John Hemphill, to announce for the dry republican | nominee. 2 La Follette to Talk Out in the northwest, Senator La Follette, republican, of Wisconsin, is preparing to take the stump in behalf of two democratic candidates, | Senator Thomas J. Walsh in Mon- | tana, and Edward P. Costigan, in| Colorado. | Reports of party switches come | from the heated Nebraska senatorial | rice where Senator George W. Nor- | Jis, republican opponent of the | Hoover administration, is fight Gilbert N. Hitchcock, demo neminee. Mr. Hitchcock received assurance of support from the democratic senatorial committee after he had demanded explanation | it New York where it has been tried | of a published report that the com- | mittee was pursuing a “hands-oft” policy in his campaign. Down in 2 the republicans | refrained from putting up a sena- torial candidate in the race between Senator Heflin and John H. Bank- Tiead, the democratic nominee. Heflin was forced from the demo- | cratic ticket for his failure to sup- ‘ port the presidential candidacy of | Alfred E. Smith in 1928. ‘ The wet and dry issue is just as' well mixed up. There are dry dem- | ocrats and wet democrats, dry re-| publicans and wet republicans, with | all degrees of dampness in between. | Senator Fess of Ohio, the chair- man of the republican national | committee and an advocate of nzl-‘ tional prohibition, is working as | hard for the republican s?natorinl; candidates in states where they happen to be wet as for those in states where their platform is dry. Sepator Tydings, of Maryland, the chalrman of the democratic sena- | torfal campaign committee, is an| un-relenting foe of national prohibi- | tion but he is giving as much at- tentlon to the campaign of dry dem- ocratic nominees as of the wets. Fearing that his statcments on the matter would not be believed Devine went to the trouble to pack the blossom and a ripe apple in a cheese box and send them with a letter to a friend in this city. 1t cost him 27 cents in postage stamps to send the parcel but he figures it would be cheap compared with the price in effort he would have to put forward in trying to prove it to the boys about the “Tabs' rooms. His letter follows: “Winsted has nothing on this place. Even Ripley himself would be surprised. Between kicking over pheasants in the paths as you walk and picking up freaks of nature 1 am having a great time. “I am sending you one of the freaks. This is off a Baldwin apple Foley's farm here in On one side of the and on the other side with apple blossoms. “I know if T were to go home and |say that this happened they would |say they alw thought I was crazy know it.
