Portace, Pa., Oct. 20 () — Two men were killed and more than a score were injured, some of them possibly fatally, today, when cars carrying 100 miners into the Son- man Shaft Coal Co. mine at Sonman ran down a steep grade and were wrecked. Three men were reported in a critical condition at a Johnstown hospital. The condition of others was not determined definitely. The men killed were Mike Hoschuck and George Sucha The accident occurred as the men were entering the mine for their day's work. They boarded the cars at the bottom of the shaft léading into the mine and a coupling broke, according to company officials. Twelve cars plunged down the grade for a distance of 1,000 feet and were derailed, crashing into the minc walls. The cars were operated by a rope from the bottom of the shaft lead- {ing into the mine to the interior of | the pit. The stories of these wit- nesses vary in detail. Versions of Mishap Differ According to Bruzas' account of the affair, Katauskas walked into the left rear part of his automobile, while Matthew McGuire, who is al leged to have been driving just be hind Bruzas, stated that it was the right front fender of Bruzas’ car that struck the man. that he saw Katauskas beforo the other man’s car struck him and says that he was practically across the intersection before he was knocked down. Find Bloody Towel Officers said they had found a blood-stained tire iron, wisps of the child’s hair and a bloody towel in |the O'Loughlin automobile which | Mrs. O'Loughlin used twice the night her stepdaughter disappeared. Mrs. O'Loughlin explained the towel had been used to stop a nose bleed suffered by her son.
